Good point.
And I'm just jealous because I don't have $500 to spend on an iPad. Seriously, if my iPod touch ever breaks (32GB, $300), I will spend $200 and get an iPad. I have a BestBuy replacement plan, so they will just let me put the price of the iPt to another device.

Really? I thought that part of the policy only applied when there is no "comparable technology". Assuming that there will probably always (at least for the length of your protection plan, since they only go four years max) be a 32GB iPod touch, wouldn't you just have to get that?

If what you said is really the case, that's good to know. Because the way it was explained to me was just like I said previously.

In reference to the original post.. I think it really only destroyed the Netbook market. I have an iPad and i've never, once, used the Maps app or any navigation app. I don't think i've ever even opened it. If I am in a car without navigation, I use my phone.. I wouldn't pull out my iPad for this.

Judging by tons of posts on here:
It's destroyed whatever market is filled with people who have 500 bucks to blow on a toy that's novelty will wear off after 3 months.

my ipad was seven hundred twenty nine usd, thank you much, and i use it every day at my workplace for business and at home for pleasure. it has easily been worth the money.

I've seen auto GPS apps run on the iPad, and IMO they're at least 10x better than what any mainstream unit could do. This bashing of Navigon on the iPad is news to me, because previous threads have also been raving about how good it really is.

As for portable aviation GPSs, those things are toast. People have been shafted by companies like Garmin when it comes to these things. Their newer ones are cheaper, but they also suck a lot more. Why pay $1000-$3000 for a GPS that does less when you can buy an iPad for $600 that would essentially be a flight bag in a screen? The Garmin 696 which has comparable screen size and functionality costs in excess of $3000, but has a crappier resolution. I'm glad I didn't shell out $800 for a base model garmin unit 2 year back when I started flying. The only advantage it has over the iPad is XM weather and ADS-B, which has already come to the iPad (however the developer seems to be skimming the market when it comes to price).

Navigon sucks on the ipad, seriously. It's a bit more useable if you jailbreak and install full force, but the maps themselves were made for a much lower resolution. What happens is that you don't see street names, highway names, etc etc, you just don't get the correct amount of information that the ipad's resolution should have. Otherwise it's pretty decent as a navigation program, I use it all the time and I do like it other than a few weird quirks like when in heads up mode when you pan it goes into north up mode and there is no way to disable that.

Don't get me wrong, I'm completely rooting for the ipad. But navigation companies haven't really brought their A game, and Apple is content to let a golden opportunity pass them by. I know Garmin recently announced their phone was a failure and they were going to develop for the iphone/ipad, can't wait to see what they churn out.

Not me, I use mine every single day in both business and research, and my own personal enjoyment. My poor Macbook Air sits dusty and unused 3/4 of the time. Why the bitterness over a "toy"?

I guess all the "I'm gonna buy this as soon as it comes out and then forget about it!" people live in the MacBook Air forum. My mistake.

I guess jealousy is strong motivation to make stupid comments... Or is that my mistake?

I agree that netbook sales are getting hurt more by the lower prices of desktops and some laptops. Not by the iPad. And Garmin GPS kicks the iPads a'ss.

Actually I purchased my Air 2 years ago and heavily used it every day until the ipad came out. I still use it, but mostly for text intensive purposes.

I still don't understand the bitterness, it's kind of amusing in a train wreck sort of way.

My bad guys. I guess more people complain out of nowhere. Seems like somebody will only tell you that they like something if you ask them, where somebody that doesn't like something will just spew crap everywhere all the time.

No you are not.

The book industry is going to be affected by iBooks and Kindle, and I read that Nintendo was more scared that the iPad and the iPhone affected their business than XBox and PS.

As others have said, jealousy is a STRONG motivator. In this case, it is indeed not only obvious but kind of entertaining.

E-readers, netbooks, portable games consoles (though the iPod touch is already eating that market up anyway), portable DVD players (though aren't they already dead?), maps, and probably a lot more we haven't even thought of yet.

Yup...portable DVD players died with the rise in popularity of programs such as Handbrake and DVDShrink.

Speaking of portable DVD players and things of that ilk, I had to laugh when I saw a guy with a PORTABLE CD PLAYER strapped to his waist in the gym the other day. I know I wasn't the only one to do a double-take. Back in the day, though, I had become very adept at switching CDs on the treadmill without missing a beat. Remember the quest for ever-enhanced "anti-skipping" technology???

The iPod, of course, killed the portable CD player LONG ago.

Back to iPad, I am sure that iPad has also cut into the portable gaming sector, as well, i.e. PSP.
