They're also not going to redesign the case at this update. It's just going to be a simple processor swap from Merom to Penryn.. the rest of the internals will be identical to the current MBP.

You'd be more likely to see a case update in the summer when Montevina comes out, because Apple will need a new motherboard with the new Intel chipset. They aren't going to go and design a new mobo now just to have to do it again in 6 months. That would be a waste of a ton of R&D money.

What's stopping Apple redesigning now, but in anticipation of a new mobo? Not saying it'll happen, but surely it's possible

Very possible. I hope Apple does redesign the MacBook Pro like they did the Mac Book. It's beyond time for that, and we need a new Macbook Pro case design soon, or the Dell and other PC vendor's models will start to look very good.

That sentence makes no sense.

Anyways, it will cost Apple money to design a new motherboard to fit a new case. They already will be making a new motherboard in June when Montevina comes out. So it just seems logical to do the two at the same time.

It would cost Apple a bunch more money to do two redesigns in six months, and there's no point. It wouldn't be a smart business decision.

Penryn is a pin-compatible upgrade from Merom, so they won't have to make any other changes to the MBP.

not sure if this is possible but its worth asking...

is it possible to design around the new motherboards and adapt them with the design they will introduce next week later this summer?

if that makes sense....

DigiSkunk managed to understand me just fine, zioxide. Must be a case of PEBCAC on your side. ;)

A "futureproof" design that can accomodate Motevina.

Not only that, but a design that would make it easier for Apple to implement future hardware, and give users more BTO options. Yes, very much like PCs but give it more of an Apple feel. I am seriously wanting a SSD in my MacBook/MacBook Pro, some more BTO options, and more customization. I do love my Mac notebooks and desktops. I just need more options to LOVE!

That does sound cool, I'm looking to upgrade my beloved PB 12" and I want a decent Notebook for my photography/Graphics needs and much more. a SSD is not for me but more options would be nice like a hi-res for the 15" and a 512 Graphics Card

Seems more like crappy grammar on your side.

You can only future proof so much especially when many of the technologies that will be used in Montevina aren't available yet.

Montevina brings: new (GM45) Northbridge & Southbridge, 1066MT/s FSB, DDR3-800 ram, new wifi adapter with WiMAX, etc.

1680 x 1050 15.4" panels have been in notebooks for at least 4+ years.

Yeah, but that wasn't the question. The question was if they make them with LED backlight units.

MBP redesign I think will be something saved for WWDC along with montevina. CPU/GPU boost maybe for macworld I think!

The star of the show is likely to be the new MacBook Thin or whatever they'll call it. MBPs will get a revision like the MacPro, but no new case design. Apple has a small Industrial Design group, so it would be too taxing to design a totally new machine and redesign existing machines at the same time.

What I may not understand is this "saving the redesign for later, or WWDC but I am sure this rumored ultra portable is coming," statement. I do want an ultra portable book but I think Apple would have been putting their efforts in the wrong place by putting out a new machine when their current machine is still lacking.

If Apple is just going to do a speed bump on the MBPs then why not just release them before the 5 days are up like they have done with the Mac Pro? I see why PC switchers get pissed off with Apple and their design schemes, didn't see it as much before, when I didn't do as much video editing on the go, but now, it's a headache trying to cut on a midrange laptop like the MBP. Any amount of heavy lifting beyond FCP, Motion, and Photoshop slows the thing down dramatically.

I won't complain too much. I will grab me a Mac Pro and a 23" display, then find a MacBook or something from somewhere to get a stop gap portable until a real update of the MBP comes, if one doesn't come by MWSF.

digital skunk...

i agree. this makes a lot of sense. I see a case design plus internals. fix the problem at hand before picking up new ones

dude if they made the pro case any bigger no one would be able to move it

its already the biggest and heaviest work station on the market i believe

I never said that should make it bigger.

I was making the point that they used the old case as I believe they will do with the MacBook Pro.

I guess my use of the word "Crammed" put you off -- I should have said "put."

Yep, my sentiments exactly.

I don't think we will see a case redesign but this talk about them not doing it due to the upcoming changes in the internals doesn't seem grounded in fact, since more or less the same case has been in use for 5 years amid a myriad of internal changes, including the complete overhaul from PPC to Intel. Apple doesn't have to redesign anything when a new internal architecture arrives, just as they could easily redesign around it before it arrives.

The only design change to the design I'd like to see is user swappable hard drive like on the MB. I suspect that would make for a myriad of changes for the internals... Others talk of additional ports for eSata and such which seem like reasonable changes over time.

Hey, don't try and point a finger at me - there was nothing wrong with what I said. If you can't understand a sentence while other people can, just own up to your own deficiency.

Anyway... realistically if Penryn is just a straight chip swap, I don't imagine there'll be a redesign. We'll see in a few days, I guess.
