Saw The Lego Movie, and found it really funny and sweet. My 10 and almost 13 year olds had a blast, and we parents had fun with all the references aimed at us. Fun for the whole family! Should be a contender for best animated feature.

I'm not sure how it was selected, but The Dragon Pearl was okay for kid-friendly adventure. I thought the 4.7/10 ranking on IMDB was pretty fair.

I also finished Ip Man 2. I'm not sure how historically accurate it was, but it was a decent movie. My wife's complaint was that it was dark and depressing, which I had to agree with.

With my iMac going bye-bye, saving money for a replacement.

....

I know you're a blu ray person, but if you can find Assault on Precinct 13 in any version cheap, I'd say check it out.

What is it with you selling your household...?! :D

Not sure about Assault on Precinct 13 though, both, DVD and BR, are bloody expensive in the UK (well, Amazon) while being okish in Germany. It's just that I perfer the UK versions so much more...maybe an exception is called for here.

Agreed about Kubert; I thought about it a bit and blame mostly the colorist now - those are some constantly crappy colors! Did the Punisher run start already? Haven't been to my c-shop lately...enjoying Uncanny Avengers quite a lot though.

Shrink, as always: thanks a lot for bringing out the dead old, forgotten gems! I've seen The Asphalt Jungle and Crossfire 1-2 years ago and competely agree with you. Will check out the other ones when I find some time. Murder, My Sweet and Kiss Me Deadly are the next in line..

LOL...selling my household, hopefully it won't come to that. It's been rough lately. Anyway...

I know you prefer blu ray, but can you rent Assault on iTunes in Germany? (Forgive me if that's a dumb question) I am not sure if iTunes in Germany gets the same content as we do in the U.S.A. Amazon UK is expensive (the shipping is a killer now.) I'm kind of glad my multi-region dvd player went kaput because the shipping was more than the dvds. X-x

Always nice to hear about the classics from Shrink.

New Punisher run started last week. There will be 2 issues released this month apparently.

kaput? :D

Actually Amazon UK is usually slightly better price wise than the German equivalent (regarding movies). Not sure about iTunes, guess they should have it. But I don't use the iT-store and especially not for renting a movie I'll most likely watch a couple of times = classic.

Totally unrelated but did you see Dredd ('13)? I know some MR-folks really disliked it, but tbh: Not me. :D It's what these Punisher movies should have been like.

Yup, Kaput. Toten. Bye, bye. :D

AoP13 trailer.

Dredd? No, not yet. The extent of my 2000AD knowledge is Slaine (whom I still enjoy), but I will rent Dredd eventually. Your description has my interest piqued.

Speaking of the Punisher did you see Thomas Jane's short, Dirty Laundry? I was not too keen on him as Frank in the original film, BUT, I would not complain if he plays Frank now after seeing this short. Very brutal.

Both winners.

In Murder, My Sweet watch for the character names Jessie Florian, played by Esther Howard. It's just a small part, and she is incredibly good, and has one of the great lines in the film. This was one of the first, if not the first, film Dick Powell made as a transition from his cutesey boy song and dance man roles to something VERY different for him. There was great trepidation about casting him in a role like this because all his earlier stuff was in really light musicals. I'm also a big Mike Mazurky fan, and he was just right for the part. Excellent choice for a hard boiled detective film noir movie.

I liked Kiss Me Deadly, too...but I thought Murder My Sweet was better. Ralph Meeker is good as Mickey Spillane (who, of course, is the author of the book upon which the movie is based), and I think that was Cloris Leachman's first film role. Pretty breathless, over the top, and short...but fun to watch.

And just remember..."old" and "dead" are two entirely different things! They better be because I'm old...well...we won't even think about that!

;) :D

Quite so and very well said.

There is, of course, a difference between 'old' and 'dead', in this context, and it is a very salient one, and one needs to draw a distinction between the two of them.

Indeed, it is perfectly possible to be 'old' (venerable, mature, rich in lived life) and not 'dead'; equally, it is quite possible to be 'dead' but not old (and I do not necessarily mean this in a strict literal sense, as in 'he died too young, alas', but, rather, also also in a cultural, literary, social, political and artistic sense, too, where some perfectly useless ideas, theories, fashions, movies, and art expired with timely decency, the brevity of their existence proving that neither marketing, nor luck, nor youth, can protect them indefinitely.....).

Hmm, now that you've mentioned it....sounds sensible...will give it a thought.

But thanks for the details re noirs, I'll try remembering them. ;)

Grown Ups 2- if you think Adam Sandler is the best actor in the world, maybe, otherwise I have to wonder how large an audience is out there for this kind of farsical humor with a bodily functions, a deer that likes to pee on people, and even further how a movie like this gets bankrolled?

Captain Phillips - I finally got around to renting this, and it was excellent.

The Lego Movie - Took my nephew to watch this over the weekend, and in the first 5 minutes, my reaction was "I'm going to hate this." But it picked up VERY quickly and halfway through, I was completely into it, you just have to accept the craziness happening on screen. Very entertaining, for both kids and adults.
It's basically scenes like this, so if you think its even mildly funny, then you'll like enjoy the movie.

He has his own production company.

The Heat (2013)- I'm just not a fan of Melissa McCarthy's brand of humor, which seems to be the prevalent form of movie humor these days. Figures it's by the same guy who did Brides Maids which I did not care for either. Part of me longs for the good old days when funny was not based on raunch, as I think of classics like the Pink Panther and It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World. :)

Before you judge my list of recent movie viewings, keep in mind it's a compromise with the wife on what we watch. ;)

...

Big Trouble in Little China (again.) Love it.

I am staring at the dvd of Donnie Yen's The Lost Bladesman. A supposively more realistic take on Guan Yu's trials and tribulation through the Han Dynasty 3 Kingdoms period.

That's been sitting here for a week, time to watch.

Wow thought that was just me.

I like Melissa McCarthy, but not the films she's in. I couldn't stand Brides Maids either. Give me Pink Panther, Mel Brooks or Monty Python any day. The raunch/gross out humor never appealed to me either.

I realize I am repeating myself, but as far as modern humor goes, I love Dumb and Dumber which is more silly than anything else. The only toilet humor I remember was on the toilet when Lloyd gives Harry TurboLax for stealing his girl. Something about Mary was pretty good too. :)

Just watched Pacific Rim for a second time, and it has some outstanding CGI and fight sequences. I may actually buy it. :)

I recently watched Lost in Translation. I enjoyed it. It was sort of similar to "Her"

I also watched Silence of the Lambs which was really good also.

Recently saw La Femme Nikita (1990 French version with English subtitles) - Excellent overall. I enjoyed the movie start to finish, except I felt that the ending was much too abrupt. Much better than the TV remakes.

Also watched April Fool's Day (1986 slasher horror flick) - Pretty average, to be honest. Bunch of kids in the middle of nowhere, getting killed off one by one (sounds familiar?). Not too much horror, a little gore, and a decently interesting twist at the end.

Dumb and Dumber runs circles around most comedies today. :) I love that movie.
