Oh great! Yeah, I enjoy stories that offer an “alternative perspective”, plus it such great source material (the short story, the movie).

I meant to mention it’s very short, so it’s a pretty small time commitment (hopefully other folks will check it out).

Did you see the prequel? (That was sort of marketed as a reboot, had the same name, but was definitely a prequel...)

Yeah, some stories don’t have an easily followed narrative. If you want to read a really fun story that’s based on the HPL works, but has a clear narrative, and a much more modern take on the material - and even presents man as not being totally defenseless (vs. Cthulhu shows up and everybody craps their pants...), check out: The Burrowers Beneath by Brian Lumley. If you dig on that, and are interested in the sequel it’s titled: The Transition of Titus Crow (a character from the previous novel).

Heck, they’re both bundled together as one ebook for $5.69 (Titus Crow: Vol I) from Amazon:

Thanks for the tip! :) That name kind of reminds me of the Kothoga in the The Relic (1997), not a bad monster movie. Whatever happened to Tom Sizemore? I seem to remember he had some personal problems sometime after Saving Private Ryan.

Last night I watched Oz the Great and Powerful. I've seen The Wizard of Oz too many times to count, and I've read several of the books.

Overall, I thought it was a passable prequel. The best performance was by Mila Kunis, because her character seemed to be the one that changed the most.

I think I might try and see it in 3d.

I enjoy those kind of stories too.

Thing Prequel. Nope. I'll leave the Norwegian camp story in my imagination.

Watched The Man from Hong Kong (1975) online. I understand what they were trying to do, but this fell flat for me. I expect most of my '70s Martial Arts movies to be Shaw Brothers period pieces of insanity...:D

and I've been watching the highway fight scene from Captain America The Winter Soldier ceaselessly on YouTube. :D That scene has a lot to do with why I saw this theatrically so many times. I really feel like I'm right there watching these two go at it. Wish Disney etc. would say exactly which format of Digital will be included in the blu ray release. If it's iTunes, I'll wait another two weeks to buy; if not, I'll probably get the digital.

It’s best left there :D It’s not that it’s a particularly bad scifi/horror flick, it’s just such a retread with nothing added, and without the incredible cast/director of the ’82 movie.

I could summarize the prequel and it’s exactly what you can surmise from the opening of Carpenter’s flick: Norwegian base digs up Thing, thaws it, s*** goes bad.

Love Shaw Brothers Kung Fu movies, especially the ones with kind of fantasy/fantastical "Kung Fu powers".

36th Chambers of the Shaolin
Five Deadly Venoms
Flying Guillotine

I just finished Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (1995). I love that one and can't wait for the 2015 reboot!

I'll have to watch CAWS when it is available for streaming. I disliked the original.

I agree, The Thing prequel was not a bad movie, but it (what happened at the Norwegian camp) was all best left to the imagination.

TCM aired The Maltese Falcon (1941) last night so I recorded it for viewing, again.

A truly remarkable film, with not a weak spot anywhere. It was director John Huston's first directorial assignment, and Sidney Greenstreet's first film role.

Some argue, and I would agree, that this is the first film noir. Others contend 1944 "Murder, My Sweet" is truly the first. The usual unresolvable argument among film noir aficionados.:p

Have you read the novel by Dashiell Hammett? It's on the list of the best English-language novels of the 20th century and is listed in 10th place in "The Top 100 Crime Novels of All Time". I have it on my TBR list. I may watch the film once I read the book.

This, Casablanca, and The African Queen are my favorite HB films. :)

Murder, My Sweet was an excellent movie too. I saw that one back in June; should watch it again soon.

I still have yet to watch Casablanca, and The African Queen, but they're on my list!

No, I haven't read it. But I should. I'll have to see if it's available on the Kindle.

I think you will find that Huston practically handed copies of the book to the cast, as the film is all but word-for-word, scene-by-scene from the book. Only one chapter was dropped from the book in the film, and I read that many of the book's reviewers felt the chapter was odd and misplaced in the book.

There was almost no "adaptation" done from the book.

You're welcome ;)

I purchased it.

I'll still read it!

That's interesting.

Excellent! I'd be interested to know what you think of it once you're done. It's a short novel. Maybe post your thoughts in the Book thread if you want :)

Once I get to it, I'll take my findings over to the Reading thread.
