The Great Wall. 6/10 on IMDB. It was silly, fast, loud, exciting. Great drama? No way, but I'd give it at least a 7 or 8.

Black Panther. Finally got to see this. I don't know if it matters that I saw this after Avengers: Infinity War, but I thought this was another decent Marvel movie. Next up is probably Deadpool 2.

As to the Senator: the main theater is a beautiful restoration. It and AFI are marvelous throwbacks to the golden age but updated gently for our times. I’ve never been upstairs. Having been in the balcony at DC’s Uptown several times, I’ve concluded I like to be down in front.

I’ve been in their second theater once (led a film group to see Citizen Kane). Don’t bother. Saw my first movie in their third screen this year (Harry Dean Stanton’s final film, Lucky). It’s a glorified TV screen. I was so glad to catch such an obscure little film that I didn’t mind the presentation but don’t know if I’d pay out cash for it.

Oh crud, Senator has 3 screens now? I'm so out of the loop these days. I've watched movies twice in the mezzanine viewing room for birthday parties & definitely prefer to sit in the front two rows on the main floor instead. THAT was the ONLY way to watch the renewed platinum version of Hitchcock's North By Northwest (looking up into Mt Rushmore nostrils by gods sake. Also to really feel in amongst the cornstalks during the cropduster scene, and the way the crowd moved forward while Grant moved backward. I dreamt I climbed that cliff later that night). That huge Senator screen, up close, is definitely immersive & visceral. The front seats are perfectly placed from the screen in my opinion. I watched The Last Indian with Anthony Hopkins in the front row too, and frankly, to be tangled up inside the hot engine on the salt flats is the only way to watch it.

Unfortunately the Senator was so packed for the platinum version of Casablanca that we had to sit in the very back row. The view was still clear but too far away and the seats felt crowded because of the sea of people. On the other hand, it's fabulous to watch a terrific movie with a huge appreciative audience.

(Saw Fantasia at the Uptown -that was great.)

Spirited Away was my first Japanese animated movie, and probably my favorite Ghibli/Miyazaki movie too. (It reminded me of weird logic in dreams/nightmares).

Regarding Ghibli female characters tho, I have the opposite opinion....
Nausicaa, Chihiro(Spirited Away), Kiki, Satsuki(Totoro), Sophie(Howl's Moving Castle), Princess Kaguya (The Tale of the Princess Kaguya).... all strong solid lead characters IMHO.

Sorry, I meant to distinguish between young female leads and the grownup-supposed-to-be-archetype-beautiful-females-who-are-not-necessarily-leads-but-not-the-interesting-supporting-female-characters-either. (I'm not being sarcastic. It's just that my vocabulary is failing me at this moment.)

The boy's mother in Ponyo is actually pretty good, but Ponyo's mother goddess is horrible. In Porco Rosso, the tavern/restaurant owner is blah. ALL the kids (female or male) are terrific. It's just the supposed-to-be-very-attractive grown women who are characterless. The older, weird-looking men & women are interesting. The kids are interesting.

Oh yes, somehow forgot about it (!!!) My Neighbor Tortoro ties with Spirited Away.
I have Tales From Earthsea on DVD but still haven't watched it yet. I read somewhere that it's supposed to be disappointing. I loved Ursula LeGuin's book series.

Lower your expectations -if you have any- for Deadpool 2. I still need to see the Great Wall.Maybe if I do not go into the city tomorrow to see something, I'll will rent.

I’m more excited about seeing Robert Mitchum in Charles Laughton’s sole directorial output, “Night of the Hunter.”

Two thumbs up for Night of The Hunter. I love that movie and especially Mitchum's creepiness (as well as the badassery of the old lady). Stunning images too (that trip down the river for example)..it's probably time to watch it once more.

Great book. Great movie (James Agee's huge talent on display in the screenwriting). Great idea to rewatch it. Thanks. All I have to do now is round up the DVD. I hope I didn't lend it out... if I did, I will never see it again.

Still recovering from SOLO. Oh, so. Low.

The Criterion disc is phenomenal. The outtakes and documentary add up to twice the movie length and are a fascinating study on filmmaking. I plan on spinning much of that stuff before hitting the theater.

@ CrickettGrrrl. Quick reply... to say Senator has three screens is generous. I’d say 1.5 movie screens and the equivalent of an iPhone 6/7/8 screen held 24” from your eye in a shoebox strapped to your head.

That they ran Citizen Kane on the “medium” screen was an eternal disappointment.

Solo was pretty good. First 1/4 was just so-so but then it picked up and got better and better. One point that I won’t spoil had me wondering where in the timeline this was supposed to take place. My head still hurts from the explanation my friend gave me. Anyway, it’s a good heist film and fun and great action. It fits well into the SW universe but doesn’t beat you over the head with references to the other movies.

I saw Solo last night.

The film is entertaining, the story has been already been said, it slow at the start, but gets better as moves on. There are bits as Star Wars fan, that I didn't like, others that I did.

In my book is a solid 7 out of ten. It gave me a little hope to this franchise, after the debacle that was the Last Jedi.

The Night of the Devils (1972) - Not a good Eurocult retelling of Tolstoy’s Vurdulak (vampire) tale. I hadn’t seen this movie in many years and it should have stayed buried in my memory. Though it was kind of fun to see the little girl from Argento’s Cat o’Nine Tails go all Night of the Living Dead on her ‘mom’. Beginning to think Gianni Garko was not as good an actor as his Sartana performances would lead you to believe (though I do like him in the one giallo he made with Lucio Fulci);oh well.

Could you please give a short 1-10 rating for the Disney SW movies? :D
That'd be very helpful to put Solo into perspective as I am reeeeealy reluctant to watch them anymore "after the debacle that was the Last Jedi". Thanks!

So glad I skipped the Last Jedi. For me, I will probably check out an anthology SW film if it looks like fun, but outside of that, I would rather give Disney money for some of their Marvel films. Rogue One is starting to seem like an outlier.

For Memorial Day weekend watching Mr Roberts (1955)- A favorite WWII movie with a good mix of comedic elements and drama. Great cast, Jack Lemmon is outstanding. :)

Oo, Kelly’s Heroes (1970) next. Completely improbable, but I like it anyway. :)

Then Where Eagles Dare! :D

Solo was okay, pretty good not great. I got the star wars feels when you see Han and Chewie flying around in the falcon, and I did like the falcon back story, but otherwise it was some what forgettable.

As for the episode I cameo near the end, it was cool, but I didn't really get the connection to the rest of the movie. Felt extra.

See spoilers below...

Are you referring to Darth Maul? This takes place after Episode 1, if you look a the legs, they are mechanical which falls in line with the "Rebels" cartoon where he survived and came back

Solo was great, and I was far more interested in the characters than I was for The Last Jedi. The acting is better, too.

While I wouldn't say it was great, it was definitely better than TLJ in my book. I mentioned it in the "Solo" thread that I like EP1 better than the TLJ.

I thought Solo was a fun ride.

Did you not like DP2?

Actually that goes back a bit further
the mechanical leg bit goes back to the Clone Wars cartoon and Maul's criminal dealings as well. Guess Lucas realized what a mistake it was to kill Maul and there you go.

Watched Swordsman and Enchantress again; a wonderful, wonky Shaw Brothers wuxia with Ti Lung doing his thing oh so darn well.

paralyzed...short night.jpg

Also revisited Short Night of the Glass Dolls (1971) and A Lizard in a Woman's Skin (1971). Two of the best giallos ever made.

I've always enjoyed Short Night... but a few recent revisits have pushed it much higher up on my favorites list, as director Aldo Lado uses tension over violence to create a compelling, dreadful build up to the shock reveal. Jean Sorel was one of the best actors Italian genre films had then, and he's fantastic in both movies. He usually plays an adulterous cad, but in Short Night... his heroic journalist is someone we want to see crack the case and make it out alive.

I've waxed on about how much I love A Lizard in a Woman's Skin and think if Lucio Fulci had continued making movies like this one, I would consider him a favorite director.

Beginning to think Dario is very overrated when compared to these movies, Sergio Martino's first two with Edwige Fenench (The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh and All The Colours of the Dark), A White Veil (Dress) for Mariale, and What Have You Done to Solange? All of these gialli were released between 1970 and 1972. As I've long professed, characterization makes a huge difference.

I think that's what I miss most about Fulci's work after Lizard and Argento after Cat 'o Nine Tails. Neither director really gave a crap about characters going forward and their stories suffered for that (Well, okay, Tenebrae was more character-driven than anything Dario had done since Cat O' Nine Tails), but it is a bit of bummer.

Revisiting Short Night and Lizard over the last day has been quite an eye-opener for me. It hammers home what I want in my movies; make me care about the characters, give me a solid story, and I will gladly go on that journey.

@rhett7660 - re: DP2. I loved Josh Brolin. I disliked the rest of it, except for the parachute jump scene and the mid credits scene -which to me- was the funniest thing in the whole movie. I can get on with the type of humor in DP2 providing it's funny. For me and my friend, DP2 was not. Josh can spend the rest of his career playing comic book characters and I'd see every single film. The man is fantastic (yes, I even liked him as Jonah Hex).

It was like an end credit scene. You know, teasing the next movie more than wrapping up this one.

If nothing else, that film cemented my decision to avoid Russian bath houses. Not that they were of great interest even before seeing the film, but still.

Great movie!

Fantastic movie, I'd suggest A History of Violence as a Viggo follow up :D

Funny enough, I had the exact same thing happen at a Russian bath house, I was like, "Really? A hit? Jeezus, I can't even relax for 5 f***ing minutes ..."

Yep!! I watched that the following night. So which scene did you like more? The bath house or the stairs? Haha.

People love History but I just thought it was the same old story again: bad guy tries to go good but other bad guys try to stop him.

Is it wrong that I had the same response to both ... ?

:D

Plus, more Ed Harris goodness, holy smokes, I don't know if you're watching West World, but I'd highly recommend it, not only is it fantastic speculative sci-fi, with great concept and writing but Harris is *amazing* in it.
