i recall there is an open source NAS effort out there. good & bad but been a while as i have gotten lazy the 2010 drobo box

i have a fan-free micro ITX box w/ linux but the thing about firmware boxes for a residential situ:
-they generally use less power
-smaller foot print less noise
-can be reliable

whatever; a NAS should handle damaged hard drives w/ confidence. Maybe even have a 5th slot with a hot swappable spare. You know one or two drives will fail.

Sure, but if you want it as a machine to tweak and expand and you're used to managing fleets of machines anyway it's not a big deal, for me the whole config is backed up as infra-as-code and all the data is backed up separately :) (and for drive failure, in my case storage is a RAID5 of 3 drives, plus separate backup. I could have a hot spare in there too or go RAID6 with the open bay but it's overkill for my home use to do that)

That's why I mentioned that a turnkey NAS could do the part that's important to NutFlush920 without the rest of the hassle. For that matter their existing mini can.

Why would the file work fine though from my MBP and not the MacMini?
OK, that was no help then.
When I connect the hard drive to the Mini and access the drive via the network on iTunes from the MBP it freezes but when I run the file directly from the MBP no freezing.
What exactly do you mean by "when I run the file directly from the MBP"??
Are you connecting same external drive to MBP and Mini, in one case (Mini), playback stutters, in other (MBP) it does not?
Or do you have a second copy of movie stored on MBP internal drive?

to the OP:
just saying video on a network doesn't take much bandwidth.
We moved to new diggs. We experienced video drop outs. I had to re locate my wifi access point box to its now totally central location.

i am shopping for a NAS box so
last night i visited synology customer support at community.Synology.com/forum to get pre sales information. I looked over how synology handled their support issues, especially for their home security platform "Surveillance Station". Likely synology (an asian off shore cooperation) employed a local third party handle the US forum. Running applications on a NAS box has value for me but not if it is a wispy proposition that it will maybe not work as intended. My opinion and i am the customer; i need to open up my view of NAS box manufacturers.
i have a very old 2010 5 bay NAS box still working but the manufacturer dropped all upgrades and support years ago. At this point if Drobo doesn't care why should I and buy from them exclusive.

more thoughts:
Not a bad thing; it seems a once you buy or build a nas box, the next gen hard drive are always double the previous years size. Every year or two you can expect your NAS box to detect another drive failure forcing you to buy that next generation hard drive. More efficient? if you buy the increase size drives in pairs but your nas box size will continue to grow and typically follow your storage needs.

For less than a 4bay size NAS box:
-you will not be able to just swap out drives when they go bad or just fill up. Thus for any JBOD or stripe raid 01 config buy the largest size drive you need/afford.
-say for a any average hard drive in a none raid5 config you are essentially decreasing or dividing the MTBF.
-for any nas box; there is no totally standard upgrade path to follow if you want upgrade a NAS box from JBOD/raid01 -> raid05.

I have a 2015 15” MBP and a 2012 Mac Mini. The MacMini is connected to my gigabit Router with CAT6 and has 3 large (14TB total) drives connected via USB3. I was using the Mini as a iTunes Home Share Server for my wired Apple TV but some movies (not all) stutter during playback. The audio plays but the frame freezes.

I put the same file on my MBP and started a HokeShare and no problems. This is really pissing me off.

So I’m considering a 4 bay NAS to have my MBP access for home sharing. I don’t need one to transcode on the fly as all my content is m4v fiiles and metadata tagged by me. What NAS do y’all suggest? I’ve been looking at Synology Play models but don’t wanna pay the premium for the Play if it’s not needed. I may even consider just using the DS Video app and bypass iTunes all together if it’s advised to do so.

Thanks for the help.

There's plenty to choose from

I just upgraded my old 1.6Ghiz TS-420, to 2.0GHz TS-451+.

Most NAS's noways also have iTunes server as well.

I have a Synology 218+ and it works great streaming MKVs to my ATV 4K using Infuse. I was watching a 34G file yesterday in full HDR transmitting over wireless.

Have to agree with this...used a Synology 216 Play for several years and it worked very well with Plex and Infuse. Recently upgraded to a DS918+ and haven't looked back.
