Yeah I noticed this problem when I went from my iPhone 4 (which didn't have the issue) to my 4S, but after a few weeks I got used to it and now I don't notice it at all.

I haven't noticed a vibration-related rattle, though I do notice a rattle if I hold the phone vertically by the metal band, and tap on the back plate near the Apple logo. ...I assume it's related to the camera lenses or maybe the back place it slightly loose.

I also hear it if I toss the phone on my bed's comforter, or something like that. Doesn't worry me too much because I know other 4Ss do it too, but it is slightly annoying. Just makes the phone feel less solid.

How do you make a custom vibrate sound?

Settings > General > Accessibility > Custom Vibrations

Thats the biggest sign of the vibrate rattle is when you place the phone on the bed or something soft it sounds much lower. A hard table will absorb the shock.

The other rattle is the AF lens element. very normal.

Just when you thought you had heard it all . . . . . .

It's actually very annoying. When the phone vibrates it also creates an apparent audible noise almost defeating the purpose of putting it in vibrate only.

But then again if you don't have the issue it's easy to roll your eyes at the people that do

Exactly. The rattle would be fine with me if I didn't hear it every time I set the phone down. Even on a bed results in the noise.
