I have a piece of crap Samsung Strive as a backup (paid a whopping $5 for it) Fortunately, it's factory unlocked so it's nice to have for whenever I travel overseas.

I'd go for some form of extra battery charger, even like the small ones that just use a single AA battery. Less hassle than messing around with iPhone micros sims etc

For the OP, I suggest using an older iPhone. The first gens are dirt cheap on eBay or Craigslist.

For me, I have a cheap Samsung A107 that I got for free by redeeming my $25 AT&T giftcard that someone in this forum helped me get. I don't use it and it just sits there in my drawer.

There are some older phones I am looking at. If you want all the bells and whistles, then Samsung Galaxy S II. But if you want something just for texting and calling that also isn't an iPhone, I suggest something much cheaper and older (pre-2009) like a BlackBerry Bold 9000.

Right now, I am looking at a Palm Pixi Plus. I saw a CL ad being sold brand new for $50 last night. I text the guy and he told me it was already sold. This is one of the cheapest smartphones you can get and it was released last year. Has webOS in a candybar form. But finding the AT&T version at under $100 is harder to find than the CDMA ones. Just don't expect the hardware to be smooth even though webOS is a nice OS and the screen is small at 2.63 inches. But if you are lucky to find the GSM version of that smartphone for $50, it still beats getting used Motorola RAZR's for nearly the same price.

Windows phone 7.
I love the OS, it's def an amazing piece of eye candy and is very minimalistic, which is what I'm all about. I wish they had hardware that could compete with the iPhone 4, tho. That would give the OS a lot more merit.

Yes it's true but there are times that I am not driving like in NYC and all I have is subway or taxi so its just a matter of convience. Also sometimes I don't want to have emails all day just to be called to connected I guess

Um..

Settings>Network Turn Cellular Data to "Off". Also turn "enable 3G" to off. Back to Settings, turn Wifi off. Presto--one dumbphone using Edge, which is going to run a lot longer on a single battery charge and doesn't require that you carry or keep track of another handset, or transfer contacts to it, or any of a myriad other nuisances that are triggered by trying to keep and maintain two handsets. And it doesn't cost you a dime. Yet, if you find you suddenly need GPS, for example, or to look up an address on the web, it's simple enough to temporarily turn everything back on.

If that's still not sufficient somehow, then I'd buy the cheapest dumbphone AT&T offers without a contract. For your stated needs, you don't need anything more.
