device from Apple? Mine has faint cracks on the bottom and around volume. Never been dropped.

You need something to actually be wrong to get a replacement. They're not morons working at the genius bar. How long have you had it?

So what you're saying is I may need to swell my chest and raise my voice a bit.

Actually, that's usually likely to get you the opposite of what you want. The customers that get the best/quickest service are those that are polite, soft-spoken, but direct. Don't go in saying, "Oh, I know you're not really supposed to do this…" or any such nonsense, but be as nice to the guy behind the counter as is reasonable (without being a suckup, in other words), and you're likely to get good service.

I know, I work in service. I blow off people that get angry about things more often than those that are nice. (Not that I actually blow anyone off unless they're entirely unreasonable and have no actual grounds for complaint, but just as a figure of speech.)

My iPhone had a raised screen, but as it was only a fortnight old, the Genius I spoke to, told me the following;

Look dude, if you want, I can replace it, but it will be a refurb, and probably in worse condition than yours, and we can't guarantee the refurb is going to be flush anyway.
If your phone gets a bit scuffed and ****, and you still want the screen flush, bring it in for a cleaner fresher looking refurb and you might be lucky enough to get a flush screen!

I simply thanked him and left, felt a bit of a waste of my time, but at least he was honest with me about the situation.

I sent mine in cause the screen froze up and the camera was glitchy even after many reformating DFU restores and all setting up as a new phone. Nothing ever worked so I phoned rogers they sent a replacement and I sent my phone in, they said if they found accidental damage they'd charge the retail of the phone to my next bill. I was never charged for the phone, yet I always had an iPhone in my posession(sp?) Best service from rogers yet. All done over the phone, until I had to mail the phone back to Rogers. On top of that I didn't even pay shipping and handling all payed for by Rogers.

Very well put.
Being pleasant and polite will get you further than acting like a tough guy.

that was my point in general. I think that's always the best approach to take with customer service. And I didn't mean everyone at the genius bar is fantastic, but in general they're really good. I can see though that having a lot of "average" users or people coming in for replacements just because they think they're entitled to one would start to wear on a person

this is not true if it has any cracks at all and shows no evidence of being dropped they will replace it... I've brought back a 3G (black) and a 3GS (white)

and I got a NEW phone in both cases not a refurb

ship it instead.
they almost ALWAYS change it when you ship it to the cali one
Ive changed mine like 6 times i'll post pix later.

Just tell them it gets kinda hot, and that theres a stuck pixel on the screen they dont inspect stuck/dead pixels they just replace them.

Genius ppl know about the iphone they wont fix it

As long as something's actually wrong, they're usually pretty good about replacements. I had to get 2 replacements in the same day before (within 20 minutes of getting the 1st replacement actually)

Bypass the Genius all together and just ask to speak to the store manager.

I had 2 bad iPhone 3G's. 1st one had 12+ dead pixels. 2nd one safari would crash, open when making calls, and camera would close.

Had Genius tell me I was going to get refurbs... no thanks! Manager please.

Brand new never opened in my hands, activated at the store than went home.
