is it just me or are you guys a bit angry for Gizmodo going out of their way to write a ridiculous story (albeit, potentially true) and including this guys name, twitter and numerous other things to completely humiliate this guy in the tech universe.

Might as well call him the Steve Bartman of Apple. Except this Steve actually won't be affecting Apples plans to release a new iphone.

I wrote an email to jesus@gizmodo.com and I want this email box to be flooded. if you haven't noticed, they turned off the comments because of all the negative comments Gizmodo were gettting.

If you have the time, how about you just write something elegant and simple to Gizmodo.

Mine was:

Dear Gizmodo and Jesus Diaz,

You are a douche.

???

We should all leave him alone, that's what. His name and photo never should have been published by Gizmodo. That was cruel and unnecessary.

How was it cruel? Gizmodo is just doing what any journalistic website would do REPORT NEWS, he lost the phone, taking responsibility for the media frenzy he caused is just a consequence. here in Texas a police officer recently lost his radio car...YES lost his car (it was stolen, but he left the keys in the ignition) was it cruel for the newspapers to report the incident along with his name? nope...it's the cost of doing business...if you ever mess up bad enough expect to read about yourself in the papers too

The headline of the latest article in the #appleiphone4 tag is "It Was Gray Powell's Birthday". The entire article consists of a screenshot of Powell's Twitter feed, with a red box around couple of tweets in which Powell discusses the fact that it's his birthday, and a sentence fragment by Jesus Diaz saying "Of all the days that you can lose Apple's secret iPhone...".

Explain to me how this constitutes "NEWS" that had to be "REPORT"ed? For that matter, explain to me how this even constitutes "REPORT"ing. There are literally more words in the section consisting of links to other #appleiphone4 articles than there are in this "article".

This is nothing more than tabloid-style gossip, intended to squeeze just a few more ad dollars from Giz's big scoop.

Gizmodo has seriously became the TMZ of tech news. Nobody needed to know his name. The story to me seems like bull sh*t and we don't know the truth. Now this poor guy has to suffer. I go to Gizmodo for tech new not for them to lambast a guy to the point he may kill himself how is that tech news?

I'm sorry, the news is not the guy who lost it. It's what was found and how it was found. No reason to release the guys name. Your example of a police officer is a bit different since if I recall correctly Police officers are considered public officials.

They should fly in Donald Trump, and get a bunch of TV cameras to fire his ass. Then they should make him go to human resources re-hire him for about five minutes. Then fire him again.

If you don't get fired for this, then what exactly do you get fired for?

"Make him serve an internship at Microsoft"

Yeah, that would be awful. What a terrible, unprofitable company that is. They probably have almost no market share in any of their products.

Stop being such a fanboy because it makes you lose all your credibility and it's people like you that make me look bad for having an iPhone.

Whoa. Somebody's had a bad day and seen too many BSOD's. However, lest I be accused of MS-bashing or being an Apple fanboy, I was just trying to poke a little fun while at the same hoping that a groundswell of sympathy for Powell might prevent Apple from handing him his external genitalia on a platter. I meant no offence to MS fans. Indeed, I would have edited that option to be 'Serve an internship at MS, followed by ones at Google and Adobe' - all three fine companies but with tense relations with Apple - but one cannot edit polls. The lack of option to edit the poll also explains 'jobs' rather than 'Jobs'.

OK, to be clear: My first computer was a Compaq suitcase running DOS. One of my most rewarding experiences on the Mac back in the day was MS BASIC. I use MS Office daily and doubt the Mac would be a viable platform without it. I like Microsoft programs, but I admit to disliking Windows. OK?

They turned them off because 6 million people flooded the site to see the new iPhone, including those who keep criticizing Gizmodo for their "immoral" actions.

On topic, Powell definitely needs to be disciplined by Apple. Yes it was an accident, but I don't understand how someone could simply "forget" company property in a public place. His negligence (and Gizmodo's $5000 purchase) could have serious consequences on iPhone 3GS sales. The amount of attention this story has gotten has made it common knowledge. No one wants to buy a product if they know it will be replaced in a few weeks.

I'd say take his parking space away and his Apple stock. He should not be fired but disciplined.

Wait just a sec...
Gray Powell is a hero in my mind! He has given me a reason to buy an iPhone!

Until now I couldn't have cared less about that Apple/AT&T proprietary bull**** platform where every app has to be approved by Apple's walled garden censorship and anti-competition committee.
(If I sound anti-Apple, I'm not. I'm a devoted Mac user who could give a s*** about the iPhone and its politics.)

But dude, thanks to G. Powell I can rest assured that the next iPhone will deliver a user-facing camera which will allow me to Skype video chat with my friends in all different countries. Out from the mist of closed-platform conspiracy and capitalist greed, there finally comes a feature that empowers me as a user to the point where I can confidently say: I will buy an iPhone!

And if it weren't for Gray, I might have bought a Droid before the official announcement of the "4G".

So thank you, Gray Powell. Thank you.

IF, and it's a big IF, this was accidental then the guy should be left alone.

People make mistakes, human error is part of every day life.

Sure, he happened to leave behind a prototype of the new model of possibly the most sought after smartphone in the world, but at the end of the day he only made a mistake.

I still think the whole "left in a bar, found by a stranger who tried to contact Apple but got nowhere so punted it for $5k" story is extremely suspect though.

See, this is what I was thinking as well.

People are screaming, "It would have come out eventually", but that's a lot of nonsense. Apple certainly wouldn't have given the guy's name to the public, I'm sure they'd have preferred to keep as much of this in house as possible.

Gizmodo's reporting of this "story" has been up there with UK tabloid newspapers like The Sun and The Daily Mirror, name dropping for the sake of just another few days of scandal.
