When I had the Mac Pro 2.8Ghz 8 core model, I used it connected (optical) to my yamaha v861 HD Receiver/Rotel RA-985 Power Amp with B&W 805S x2 with B&W HTM4 (center piece).

But now its connected to my 2.4Ghz macbook pro.. but no optical =(
 
Bose Companion 5 for general use (free from work 😀), but for video/audio editing I always use a professional pair of headphones.
 
Lacie Firewire Speakers

They're relatively inexpensive, small and good. Of course, iTunes also streams through AppleTV to my stereo, controlled either through the ATV or from my keyboard.

Been using a pair of Audioengine 5's. Nice sound and no floor space required for a sub woofer. The only negative is the on/off switch is on the back of one speaker. Not a real big deal however.
