Yup... I am an American who group up in Jakarta Indonesia in the 80's - mid 90's... Americans, and most Europeans have NO idea how the rest of the world lives. I mean China + India making up almost 40% of the worlds population have SOOOO much poverty... This doesn't even account for the rest of Asia and Africa.
Why should I care how the rest of the world lives. I live in America. I was fortunate enough to be born and raised here so I am concerned with what living comfortably means here, not a third world hole.

I wouldn't really call a phone a status symbol, even if it's an iPhone. We're talking about a device that is maybe a couple hundred bucks more than something else and millions of people have one. A status symbol would be a $80k car that does the same thing as a $12k car except looks nicer and rides nicer. When we're talking about something that costs multitudes of thousands of dollars difference than we can call it a status symbol.

Agree entirely.

I think that in some communities an iPhone might be a status symbol, even in the U.S., but I don't think most iPhones are bought to show off.

The only reason I bought an iPhone 3 years ago is because Apple iOS updates are independent of wireless carrier approval (I didn't like the Nexus 4, which was my other option). Been using an iPhone 5 since then. It's old tech now, but I still like it.

Said like a true Trump supporter.

Seriously though, the predictability of your ego/ethnocentrism has no bounds.

The iPhone is a status symbol we all flaunt our latest gadget. It was and is an aspirational status symbol.

Anyone who judges other's social value based solely on which iPhone/smartphone they happen to own is a childish, pitiful being indeed. Please don't allow others to bully you into buying the latest Apple product just so you can be 'cool'.

Now, lets imagine, we have a choice and iPhone 7 or 7 Plus or an all new iPhone Pro at 5.8 inches with an OLED display dual cameras etc. Maybe no 3.5mm speaker Jack but Extremely better Audio aka Pro.

There you have your distinctly divided classes.

imagine the same arguments of dumbfounded people Who would ever need Something So Big in a phone. But everyone lusts after the best Specs and faster CPU and better colors.

But but what about 2016 ? Same Trick Apple Pulled on the iPad Crowd in 2015.... Look at this Amazing Huge iPad Pro and everyone lost their minds. (but the iPad was untouched no update) My guess is Apple introduces a Minimal Update to the iPhone 6s line this year.

Its coming whether we like it or not the iPhone Pro

Really?

I base purchase decisions on whether I like the product and it does what I want.

I don't doubt that there are people who buy what they think will make them cool and judge others in the same superficial way. I don't worry about those people. they generally tend to be insufferable.

I could point to evidence but I think this thread does that well enough. ;)

iPhone as a status symbol, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHA.
In a country like Argentina or Brazil, a $400 US iPhone SE retails for something like $800-900 in local currency. True story. Of course, people earn much less in those countries. Go figure.

There will always be be different classes. Been happening from cave man days. Socialism could cure this but only if we all are broke.

I have worked my entire life and made my company successful and am not ashamed of what I buy or do with my money. I refuse to let those who have less to shame me.

Is interesting, but having little faith in anything coming out of our educational system these days.
But what is has to do with any of the above posts, or the whole topic?

Maybe you are just jumping between topics too fast, or maybe it's only me who is not connecting your dots here? ;)

If you attach self-worth to the electronic accessories you have, you're doing it wrong.

If you value others based on their electronic accessories, you're missing out on what's important in life.

Who care about iPhone anyways.... They're all ubiquitous average experiences now. If you really want to be higher in the social ladder, get a flip phone and make a statement. You're saving money, and you get to be confident that you're not like everyone else with an iPhone.

Excuse me but I was referring to the post URL just above my post from a "higher educational institution":p

Thanks for keeping everyone straight here! Please excuse me for not quoting.;)

I think the most relevant part of that article is this:
I think there is considerably proof from psychology that this is a moving figure because people want to feel richer than their neighbors. So perhaps a better way - and this is just a hypothesis - to think about it would be that people like to feel approximately 50% richer in terms of household income than the average American family.

Mind, areas like San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, etc, you'd need a lot more than $75,000 per year. I believe a starter home in San Francisco is ~$1M. $2,000/mo will barely get you a small apartment in a good neighborhood in LA.

You may want to read it through the end, where it deals with this topic.

Ah! Do you refer to my link, when I suggested a research by Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman?

Sorry, I still don't get how #85 relates to it.

rui no onna in #89 is closer, she just yet have to get to the conclusion of the article. ;)

Maybe a vain attempt to get this thread back on topic again but here goes...

Will Apple continue to only offer OIS on the plus models or will they bring to down to the non-plus model (a year later) when the 7 is announced.

By the same token, w/rumors of a iPhone Pro...will that have something that the 7 and 7+ will not.

It's beginning to get complicated keeping track of which 'extra' features are on what model.

Yes, I read the article to the end. This isn't even the first time I've read this article (there was a link to it in an early retirement forum). Just saying in areas like NYC, SF and LA, you'd need a lot more than $75K for "happiness" (or even just to avoid financial stress) unless you've already got a fully paid for house.

I am not asking that you "get" anything.

So per the OP - since I bought a iPhone SE - am I poor? Lower class?

O well, it's works great with my Porsche.

I'll live.

So per the OP - since I bought a iPhone SE - am I poor? Lower class?

Seems to me op is saying how dare you purchase a Porsche. It's unfair you get one and he doesn't. You're shaming him. Apparently we should all be driving black Ladas.

Sad state of affairs when no one aspires to achieve but instead would rather drag everyone down.

Although explained in a slightly melodramatic way, there is some merit to what the OP is saying - Apple to many has a brand cache that we maybe don't recognise so much because we've lived in the Apple bubble for so long (a couple of decades for me).

Apple already tried introducing a tiered system with the iPhone 5C - they were just too scared of their bottom line to really implement it well.

But to counter the OPs fear - many people already 'flaunt' their disposable income by buying a new handset without question every September.

I think the OPs real problem is that he dislikes the Plus size phone and hopes they won't leave the best features for the most unwieldy size.

Ironically the phablet market started because people didn't want the cost / inconvenience of buying a phone and a tablet. It's a compromise device.

OP, let me offer you a well intended bit of advice. Reflect on the world around you. Take a good hard look at how incredibly well off you are in contrast to all the human suffering and poverty in this world. Do this and hopefully you will soon be thankful to have any iPhone along with the other things you are so fortunate to have not to mention the roof over your head, the food you have to eat and so much more. Seriously. Consider these things and learn from the experience. You will emerge better off still and a better person for it.

The things you own are meaningless. They do not define who you are. It is what you do with your life and how hopefully you positively impact the lives of others that defines who are you are. When you leave this life neither you nor anyone around you is going to give a damn about what phone you owned.

So this made me Upset, and will make many people upset. I don't know where to start other than saying will live in a class based society if you are well off you act and are treated better than people who earn less. The iPhone is a status symbol we all flaunt our latest gadget. Keep this in mind. Up until recently if you were a wealthy snob or not or just a high school teen, or a construction worker. We all had the same iPhone it was a common denominator. Hey I may not have Donald Trump's house but we use the same phone. It was and is an aspirational status symbol

Very soon no longer. And we see subtle evidence Apple is creating rather bringing its 2 Tiered system (aka rich and poor) into other gadget SKU's

we all know MacBook and MacBook Pro and now we have iPad and iPad Pros.... Some will and do physically have different Features and better hardware.

It is inevitable this is happening to the iPhone. Not only logically but it follows Apple's strategy thus far. This frontpage article really nails it https://www.macrumors.com/2016/03/26/kuo-iphone-2017-oled-curved-glass/
