Can you ' upgrade ' to the GM or will it wipe everything?

You have to restore to the GM, but you can always restore from a backup so that all your settings/app data/etc. remain the same. Just remember to encrypt your backup so you save your WiFi passwords and such.

Technically, there has never been a way of "upgrading" iOS. What happens in practice is, first, itunes backs up your phone. You put iOS Beta/GM onto your phone (this wipes everything and leaves your phone brand new) then you restore your stuff back on with itunes. Call it what you want, you are basically getting an upgrade anyhow.

I hate to hijack the thread but I have a question related to this:

Is it possible to set up as a new phone but sync the apps, settings, etc from the old backup? I read that setting up as a new device improves performance and battery life, but I don't want to have to start completely over (i.e. losing everything).

Could anyone walk me through this process?

To clarify and to ensure that I do in fact have the final build how would I install the official release from Apple over iOS5 GM?

Will I be able to update to iOS5 using itunes on a computer that is not synced with my iphone? I know every time i connect the iphone or ipod to a different computer it tells me to erase and sync.

I've heard opposite, I almost downloaded GM version but people were still complaining about weird little issues and glitches that are apparently patched in the final version for today.

Not going to happen, if they have patched any bugs up they would have released another GM. So any bugs will probably be fixed in a .1 release now.

i got the GM version and when i swipe from top to bottom to get that new fancy menu to pop up, the screen turned black and the phone went back to lockscreen after 3 seconds.. so i really hope that THATS fixed.

also when i plug in my ip4 i get "your iphone is already running the latest version (5.0)"

but its still developer version so... ? there has to be SOME difference, tiny, but some? i mean, else only developers can use it? :p
