I trun off my iBook every night. It gets really hot, even when it's sleeping, so I give it a break.

Call me overcautious, but I don't think it helps the computers life span if it's left on all the time, but maybe that's just me.

Actually, turning computers off and on produces more stress on it than just simply leave it on. This is due to the components expanding and contracting from heat, among other things. Either way, you'd be upgraded to something newer by the time any problems started to show anyway, so I wouldnt worry about it.

EDIT: Didnt notice how old the thread was.

This MacBook has been on (and asleep at night lid closed) since the day I got it almost 2 years ago (excluding when I am doing work on it), and it runs fine today.

but if u let your mb sleep over night, wouldn't that be waste of electricity? for me it feels like that when something is not use, they should be turned off but i don't know about this case... I'm getting my macbook soon and i want to use it for like 4 - 5 years until i go to college without having battery problems.

In five years, your battery will have died whether you used it or not.

I either turn off the screen or put it to sleep at night.

Sleep mode works much better in Mac OS X than in Windows (in my experience), so your MacBook should only lose about 2-3% of its battery overnight. Also, no matter how you treat your battery, you will need a new one in about 3 years unless you are happy with it holding less than 60% of its original capacity

2-3%

mine looses about 5%-10% bahahaha stupid CD MBP

Depends on how much RAM you have in your Mac. More RAM means more power needed to maintain its contents. My 4GB MacBook would lose about 8% charge overnight.

whats the normal percentage loss for overngiht sleep? my powerbook g4 looses about 6-8%. is that normal?

thats quite normal. ive found that dad's ibook looses about that per night, my CD MBP will loose about 5%-10%, but funnily enough my GF's mbp will only loose about 2%-3%. our MBP's have both the same amount of RAM, hers is just a new penryn MBP so i donno.. ahwell

A fresh battery in the new MBP, so it probably doesn't self-discharge as much as older, more used batteries.

I wouldn't worry too much about the battery discharge during sleep, as long as it's no more than about 10%. There's so many factors that can affect the battery discharge apart from RAM, such as ambient temperature, state of charge before sleeping, battery age, battery health, etc.

well as a matter of fact i bought a new battery 2 weeks before she got her MBP, so they are pretty much exactly the same age. her battery has about double the cycles as mine, yet still uses the same power as it always has.
