All I want is a modular Mac Mini Pro. A bunch of connectable Lego boxes that each contain a component. Want more ram, buy a box. Want another GPU? Buy a box. Makes entry into the ecosystem cheap (say $500) and every time you upgrade you become more committed. Apple doesn’t have to worry about refreshing their products because intel released a new processor. 10th gen intel in a new box. Stack it on.

What to expect? Simple. Under-specc'd, underclocked & underpowered Macs. Tim's platitudes extolling the virtues of the iPad. Further abandonment of the pro market. Tim's insinuations on competitor's privacy all the while ignoring his company's failings.

What else I miss?

Lack of Mac rumors suggest these products are being manufactured by Apple in Austin, instead of the more leaky Chinese manufacturers.

I had the same thought as well since they make the MacPro in the USA evidently. They did say they were going to be bringing in some manufacturing jobs to the USA as well. Doubtful they could recruit new talent with out Macrumors tattling on them though. Maybe that's why the updates are taking forever? Just guessing and thinking aloud.

Ugh, I wish Apple would just get back to original programming, emojis, and iPhones! Until then, I've got some supplemental predictions of what Apple's got in store, starting with notches for all:

The same gorgeous camera bump we've seen in iPhones will make its way onto the larger iOS devices:

The Apple Pencil will take a page out of AirPods' book by gaining easy pairing, and AirPods will return the favor by taking some design cues from the Apple Pencil:

An additional extremely classy color option will available to prospective iPhone XR buyers:

And finally, the Mac Pro will see its first design change 2013, fusing with the Mac mini for a truly professional experience. And, yes, that 6"x6" screen is Retina:

What I really want is a repairable, upgradable Mac. I’m so hopeful for the mini.

In which case, prepare to be disappointed. Unless the new Mac Mini is some hybrid Mac Pro that can be paired to do parallel computing, there’s absolutely no chance whatsoever it would be modular. No chance. Not at all.

I’m saying this both honestly, but also half hoping Apple stick with their mentality of proving whatever I say wrong with literally every product, and the new Mac Mini is actually TOO modular. Just waaaay upgradable.

Seriously, check my posting history around this time. I’m ****ing hopeless.

The last keynote was so drawn out and padded out that I rather thought that they had to hold back some new products that just weren't ready yet. So half of me thinks that this will be a really great keynote with all the new Mac hardware that we're waiting for.

But I've kind of lost faith in Apples ability to knock our socks off though. So the more pessimistic (or is that realistic) side of me is rather more persuaded that we're just going to get new iPads and AirPods and minor spec bumps to existing MacBooks and iMacs and nothing else.

This will either be the best keynote in a longtime or another snorefest that is going to drive many people up the wall.

Personally I'd like to see a taste of the future with Apple introducing an ARM based MacBook, but I doubt that they're ready for that yet.

Here’s my question: is this new laptop going to be just a MacBook Air replacement? If Apple keeps the MacBook Air branding but now with a retina screen then it makes the retina Macbook pointless. And what about the 13” non-touchbar MacBook Pro? It wasn’t updated this summer. Will it get updated or just stay in the lineup until stock is depleted and then die? My hope is that Apple’s new laptop replaces all three of these products and makes the laptop line no longer confusing. So you have a consumer line and a pro line with varying sizes/specs/prices within each. My fear is this device will be a machine designed to hit $999 price point, may still be called MacBook Air and the MacBook and non-touchbar MacBook Pro are kept in the lineup so it’s still as confusing as ever.

With the utter distain  has paid towards the Mac Mini over the years, why would anyone in their right mind buy the next model if indeed a new one gets revealed on the 30th? It will soon become the discarded step child once again, relegated to neglect for untold how many years. Why get involved with that again? We've been down this Mac Mini road before and we know where it leads: abandonment.

Here’s what the company is preparing for the Mac line, according to people familiar with the company’s plans. Some or all of these products could debut at Tuesday’s event.

  • A new entry-level laptop to replace the aging MacBook Air -- the company’s entry level laptop that Steve Jobs originally pulled out of a manila envelope a decade ago. It will have a higher-resolution 13-inch screen, as well as slimmer bezels around the display.
  • The first update to the Mac mini since 2014, adding new processors and features for professional users.
  • Apple’s also working on refreshed iMacs, iMac Pros, and 12-inch MacBooks with faster processors, and at least some of these updates could be ready for the October launch.

OK well now I’m totally confused. Is this MBA replacement going to be called MBA? Is the higher resolution screen going to be the same as what’s in the rMB and rMBP? If yes to both what is the point of the rMB? And what happens to the non-touchbar rMBP? Also what does entry-level mean exactly? If it’s $999 it’s not competing with Chromebooks and doesn’t seem like something schools would jump on so who is it for?

My fear is this device will be a machine designed to hit $999 price point...

For my non-professional photo and video editing needs, I've already reluctantly gone over to a Windows desktop for heavy lifting due to Apple's prices and failure to show much commitment to the Mac. Plus I'm not interested in all-in-ones such as the iMac. So far the experience has been quite positive.

I'd still very much like to have an Apple laptop for all other things, but if this $999 machine is "designed" to have a 128 GB drive and skimpy amount of RAM, then I will think seriously about leaving Apple altogether.

Why would you not buy something in fear that they don’t release another model?

With macs, what’s the alternative? MacBook? iMac? Mac Pro? If you don’t want to spend thousands, don’t need a laptop and don’t want an all in one w/ screen that can’t be used with any other system - what option is left? Hackintosh?

If Apple stop making/selling Mac minis in another 4 years, or its time for an upgrade, what’s so bad about going down another route then rather than now? It doesn’t change anything, you’d get 4 years or however long it last for with the product you want rather than trying to settle for the alternative now (which could be completely different in X years time).
