Apple has priced itself out of the hands of most Americans. People were buying Amazon Fire Sticks like gangbusters this holiday season. I was in the stores to see it. No one asking for Apple TVs. Not a good way to embark on pivoting to a services company.

I think without a severe course correction in it's approach to customers, Apple is in for many salad days in the near future.
I believe you are right, the way forward for Apple's growth is to get as many in the ecosystem (services) as possible. Most of the people I know who don't buy Apple just think it's overpriced. I'm starting to skip iPhone and iPad upgrades for the same reason. 1K for a 64GB phone is just downright robbery, and to think that just a little over 2 years ago they were still offering 16GB as entry level and still 5GB of iCloud storage.

Two great things about being old: a waning compulsion to upgrade; a deep understanding of the time value of money.

But at any rate, most consumer electronics upgrades these days are incremental anyways. Gone are the days when truly life-changing consumer electronics are released on a nearly yearly basis. We won’t see anything like that until vehicles with greater autonomous capabilities are released, but those will hardly fall into the CE price range.

No plans to buy any hardware in 2019. Apple needs new products AND lower cost versions.

Fixed that for you.

New hardware should start with their mobile products. They need a functional keyboard which (1) can withstand dust and regular use without failing after 12-18 months and which (2) doesn’t cause carpal tunnel syndrome due to lack of key travel.

Make gimmicky Touch Bar optional. Or better, kill it off altogether. Thank you.

Amen, Father.

This list seems very underwhelming. Basically it seems like no product overhauls or no real new products.

More like 2025 for a modular Mac.. I’ve been first in line since the iPhone 3G and this year I won’t be upgrading. The price is just too much for us, we’re now looking at buying a home and doing adult stuff and the upgrades aren’t worth it if you do them yearly. I’ll hold on to my XS MAX for 2-3 years (hopefully)

Although the consensus seems to be that there is no need for an Apple TV update, I don't have one yet and would love to buy one with some refreshed internals. Bluetooth 5.0 instead of 4.0 and gigabit ethernet instead of 10/100, for example. Edit: I was looking at the previous model's tech specs.

It's weird how I'm rooting for discontinued/dying products. I really want Apple to bring the AirPort router line back. I get that there are now many good options, but I find Apple's approach straightforward and functional, and contribute to the overall ecosystem. I snagged a refurbished Time Capsule as soon as I heard that AirPort was being formally discontinued and were no longer available new.

Although I wouldn't use an upgraded iPhone SE, I think it serves a good purpose for those who want a smaller and/or lower-cost iPhone. An SE 2 would be great, though I doubt Apple would make it.

"Never have I been less excited about the upcomin products from Apple and I have been disappointed with everything they released in 2018. Maybe I should start visiting this site less frequently."

Without question, this site is an Apple buzz kill. My thought on the matter is, if you're an Apple fan, you won't be for long if you spend time on this site. So tread carefully.

I'm planning to replace my 2010 11" MacBook Air and my iPhone 7 plus in 2019.

I was actually ready to buy the new 2018 air when it came out, and was overjoyed by the initial announcement, but the inferior chip and screen (relative to the small price difference to the 2018 MBP), got me back up on the fence. (Though I cannot sit up here indefinitely, my old Air is showing serious signs of fatigue, and are overdue for an upgrade.) So any updates to the MacBook Air or the MacBook Pro, will be very welcome.

I was tempted to exchange the 7 plus for a XS, because the 7 plus has - from day 1 - been a bit larger than I really like (but at the time of purchase the camera on the 7 plus was superior to the plain 7), but couldn't quite justify it as long as the 7 plus is alive and well. ;)

Not planning to replace my iPad mini 4, but still enjoyed the possibility of Apple's renewed commitment to the iPad mini.

My Apple TV 4 is not up for a replacement (as long as my 9YO 46" 1080p Toshiba TV are still working).

I would have bought a Homepod but I would not be able to connect to my iPod Touch because it only works with the latest generation. Oh well, a lost sale and I will end up buying another brand that can connect without the limitations.

The only other thing I may upgrade is my phone but I will wait and see what is coming out next year.

I'm with you. I have an XS Max and I have been upgrading my phone every year for the past 5 years or so but I will probably not be upgrading in 2019 due to the constantly increasing price. I used to upgrade my iPad every other year and was planning to upgrade my 2 year old 9.7" iPad Pro back in September but I just can't justify spending that type of money right now.

So unless Apple surprises us all with AR glasses this year (very unlikely) 2019 may be my first year without new Apple Hardware in over a decade.

The iPhone XR is $749 which, btw, was the same price as the iPhone 6s with that same storage amount.

I expect all of these to be woefully overpriced compared to the competition leading me to immediately lose interest.

Yes. and then I’ll post about my disinterest immediately on Macrumors. :)

I’m holding out for iPhone 12 and iPhone SE4 Haha. Also black AirPods and round Apple Watch. And I don’t care about features and benefits or quality, just give me the lowest price! Yeah, but I’m losing interest And wanted everyone to know that as soon as possible.

Wanna join the apathy club?

Interestingly you could have chosen to buy the iPhone XR at a $0 price increase from the iPhone 6s with the same storage amount.

Apple can skip the small new SE. I am getting used to my new XR, and I love it.

But a new iPad Mini and I would bite. Pretty much what I need of Apple 2019.

Since work pays for my phone and I am expected to have a working phone, I am upgrading my iPhone every 2 years. The new iPhone and perhaps iOS13 are the only things that interests me in 2019 from Apple.

It sounds like Apple will continue to use an LCD/OLED split for the displays, and all of the iPhones are likely to feature A13 chips from Apple supplier TSMC. Chip upgrades typically bring improved performance and efficiency, and the A13 will be no different.
There's also a rumor that thinner Samsung-supplied displays are on the horizon, leading to thinner iPhones.

I'm calling it now: the 2019 iPhone will be the sharpest knife in your kitchen!
