I should be going back to a physical office in May or June, I just hope the MacBook Pro is updated by then. I sold my Core i9 MBP in May when we went home for a year and have worked 100% on my iMac which has been a real dream. I love it but I will need to purchase a mobile computer in Q2. I know the M1 Macs are fine, I want a larger screen and a dedicated GPU. That is pretty much all I want from Apple this year. My other devices are doing fine.
We're thinking of going back in the office in March or April, but that's up in the air I'm sure. Right now it's kind of optional, but nobody is doing it because they're requiring masks all the time, even if you're alone in your cubicle.
All I want from Apple is an enormously greater focus on software quality control...
I don't get this. I have had iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches, and it seems that quality is mostly pretty good. And they have lots of updates, which is both reassuring and annoying at the same time.

Now if you had said, "Siri Quality Control", then I'd be ready to march with you to the space ship!
I certainly hope Apple will be updating the MacBook Pros before the 2nd half of 2021. The 16” is over a year old now and it’s pretty embarrassing how quick the new base Air is compared to the top model 16”... I highly doubt Apple will want to keep that dynamic much longer.

Not to mention, the heat and battery issues a lot of us 16” owners have been facing. The chassis itself is fine but that Intel chip has got to go!
I wonder if it's possible that it's not solely the fault of the Intel chip, but that the heat issues may actually be more complex than people think, such as maybe the combination of certain components from various manufacturers here and there. When you introduce hardware and software together, each of which is made by separate people, maybe that's when issues come up.

Rethinking the whole methodology offers new opportunities to question the old norms, the old ways of wiring or coding something. This is a whole new processor architecture, so surely somebody had to take a wrecking ball to the old code base and those old premises that it was built upon.
Apple wants to move consumer purchases for the MacBook Pro and iMac's from an average of 6 years ownership to 3 years...
Where does THIS come from? If this were true, then why did we have a 10 year long drought in MacBook Pros?
...But keeping the price the same. I call BS, Oh look the M2 processor has come out now! time to upgrade like my iPhone. This is perfect with alinement with AppleCare 3 year program. Oh and we are going to devalue your old Mac if you want to trade it in, so we get more money for Apple stock holders.

Why is my Mac running so slow, oh it only has a M1 processor and Apple has upgraded the OS.
...but on the other hand, you do have a point. Apple isn't interested in letting people make hardware changes or perform repairs on their MBPs, and quite frankly, that kept me out of Mac for all this time.
I have never had a problem with heat or battery issue with my 2019 MacBook Pro 16. Not sure what you are talking about?
There are a lot of complaints out there. Maybe you got one of the good ones?
The number drop is something they need to do. They also should standardize their model naming conventions. The iPhone 19 Plus Pro Max S!!
I'm looking forward to the "iPhone 19 Plus Pro Max Ultimate S auld acquaintance be forgot Old MacDonald had a farm and Bingo was his name oh!", or...

"iPhone 19 PPMUSAABFOMacDhafabwhno"

Heh, Just the acronym by itself would exceed most people's lung capacity! o_O;)
I am a software developer that works for a company that writes tools for the insurance industry. Our development group moved to MacBook pros about four years ago. It's very difficult for us to move to the M1 chip. Hopefully Apple will continue supporting and making Intel-based notebooks. Otherwise it's back to Linux or Windows for a lot of developers.
Apparently, Apple has thought about that. Really, this is all Intel's fault, for resting on their laurels and not innovating like their lifeblood was depending on it. And for several years now, Apple has been trying to say they weren't happy about Intel having to be dragged forward on this. Intel just wasn't listening, and now they may very well have to deal with a huge existential question.

I mean, who WOULDN'T eventually design a CPU architecture that combines low-power cores with high speed cores, and then implement a way to manage them as part of the architecture?
Not expecting this to happen but really wish Apple would add some HomePod like features to the next AppleTV like the ability to use Siri without the remote.
I'm still convinced that Siri is trying to kill me in the most insulting, embarrassing way possible, and for the body to be found without clothing on, or some such. I have to be on my guard at all times!
Does anyone actually really want a portless phone?!
It's really a frightening prospect for us old fogeys.
...I can guarantee that I could never possibly get a portless phone for my teenage son. The kids are plugged in listening to music or vids on their phones non-stop, and he'd loose wireless earphones in less than a day...
I have the 2nd gen airpods (not max or pro or e-eye-e-eye-oh), and they're always in my pocket. But I tell you, with the issues that bluetooth has, I always have the original airpods draped over the back of my neck, ready to go for important calls, like at work or with my bank, etcetera.

Mick-Mac ain’t gonna like this!
OMG, that exchange was hilarious!
I’d hand over good money to Apple if they developed a Wireless CarPlay dongle that works with my Toyota. I‘m not going to buy that popular-but-flaky re-badged Chinese gadget.

Most of my car journeys are short, and it’s a pain to connect wired CarPlay. Aside from the fiddling around with cables it sometimes takes more than a minute to connect.
Amen to that! I say wireless CarPlay for everybody!
What do you want to yell across your room to your Apple TV and every other device you have says hello because they all have Siri that’ll work.
Yeah, but he'll never get lonely, what with all those voice assistants responding back. ;)
16" MBP with M2 processor.
Eventually that will come. But from what I'm hearing about the M1, it's already a winner.
Can’t wait to dump my 2018 15”. It’s like a jet in all the wrong ways (fan noise, energy consuming) without the speed.

Now that I’m working from home, screen size is irrelevant. Just give us the option for more than 16GB RAM!
That and I need to be able to hook it up to 3-5 monitors, along with 2 other computers in that same room.
To all those who worried about your precious Intel machines being supported, you were LIED TO.. Just like Apple got rid of PPC and didn't give a warning about it, so we are now seeing the END OF INTEL macs. Prepare for your Intel Macs to be unsupported as Apple goes full force with M1. You were all LIED TO by King Cook himself, the clown he is. My condolences go out to those who spent ridiculously high price for the 2019 Mac Pro - Cook got you all good ! Now, you will be unsupported as Apple is moving to end Intel Support as late as middle of 2021.

But, keep up the fight though.
This sounds mean. Why all the anger, bro?
I’m curious as to what happens with many wired accessories if Apple gets rid of charging ports. For instance, I have a high quality audio interface that connects via Lightning. How would those type of accessories work if there’s no way to connect them? Bluetooth?
Haha, like I'm gong to sell off all my 5 pairs (at last count) of wired earbuds, 2 or 3 sets of headphones, and a bunch of microphones? That stuff is nasty from all my earwax and spit over the years. Hell, even the landfill might reject that stuff!

=============

I am greatly anticipating the MBP 16" with the M1 chip, but the 13" only allows for up to 16 GB of RAM, and offers only a maximum 2 TB as an internal SSD option. This sounds woefully lacking. I'm amazed at the development of the M1 chip, but I can't imagine that the memory and disk options are really all that serious. I'd like to do software development and music and video on the MBP, but for sure, the 16" machine should have more options.

I am also thinking of upgrading my Apple Watch, iPhone, and an older iPad Pro this year.

I couldn't care less about Apple TV. Most all of TV is way too expensive for what we get, especially if you like old Munsters and Mission Impossible episodes from the 1960s. Heh!

MacRumors, promoting Air tags since 2019. Why is this the only site that even mentions Air Tags. Has Tim Cook even come out to say something about Air Tags in the last 2 years? I mean I see what this site shows as Air Tags look like and I think they are Smart Coasters for tea or Coffee. Now there is an idea. a Smart Coaster for your beverage to measures temperature and beeps at you that it's ok to drink it without burning your mouth. ;)

they also told me the electric car project was shelved long ago and wasn’t a full auto but a system that auto manufacturers can use. Imagine an electric car running an “OS” designed by Apple to better manage batteries and safety and communications.
Automakers seem to be going all-in with respect to doing their own software. I don’t how successful Apple will be licensing their own “carOS” given that context.

Nice one - smart coasters - Apple will revolutionize the beverage industry!

Can’t wait for Apple drinks as the next big thing.

Waiting for the new 16" MBP. Still rocking the last 15" MBP, hate the noisy fans! Most software that I need for work and hobby is already ported now it's Apple's turn to deliver the computer.

Waiting for iPhone 2021 with Touch ID under glass (we will be in masks forever) then I can finally retire my 2015 iPhone 6s.

Same. I wish Apple would focus on core products more and less on these side projects that don’t seem to go anywhere (looking at you, AirPower). Granted I don’t know the specifics but I do know when Jobs ran things they juggled maybe a handful of major projects such as the iPad which actually lead to the iPhone first as Jobs knew a tablet that could only be used with a Mac back in 2004-2005 wouldn’t have a foundation for a successful market. The iPhone was a cross platform device anyone could use and changed the mobile industry (there’s a lot of interesting stories on Jobs’ push into the mobile industry with the ROKR in 2005 then pushing carriers to allow mobile device manufacturers like Apple to run their own OS’s, etc). Once the iOS App Store launched and a large market base was established, Jobs released the iPad in 2010 and a large part of its success was based on the iPhone.

Jobs‘ real passion project was changing the computer industry towards tablets and away from desktop systems. He really didn’t have much interest in the mobile industry at first but he always thought longterm and had a strategy that played out perfectly. I find that story fascinating.

While I’m excited to see what Apple may do to change the healthcare industry I wish they would focus back to Mac’s and streamline their product lines. Displays and a return to networking with mesh systems would be great as well.

The reason why there is less ram is different and you can know what it is reading some tech review before starting to spew conspiracy-like misinformation because you don’t know what you are talking about. Hint: iPhone have half or less memory than android competitor yet they are more performant and last longer. Why?
I know you weren't replying to me, but thank you anyway; I didn't know this. Can anybody link me to some info about this so that I can learn more? Thanks!
Their goal is shortening product life. Not extending it.
Except for the old Mac Book Pros, which had no end of problems ranging from prematurely failing hinges to too much heat, bad capacitors/solderings, and faulty mainboards or other components, I don't think Apple has done anything to shorten product life.

In no case, not even one, have I ever had to replace an Apple phone, watch, or tablet due to premature failure or "shortened product life", as you put it. I haven't even had to replace any batteries in all this time. I did have to replace the screen on my iPhone 6 once after I dropped the phone and cracked the screen, so that's on me, not Apple.

In fact, I've kept all of my devices for more than 3 years, or coming up on 3 years. I still have the old iPad 3 and it's just fine. I have an older iPad Pro and that's fine too. I kept my iPhone 6 Plus for 5 years before replacing it and my iPhone X Max is already over 3 years old.

My Apple Watch 4 is almost 2.5 years old, and although I'm thinking of replacing it, that's only because I think I want the new features of the 6th edition...and I have a couple of $500 Apple gift cards. But even after I do replace it, I'm thinking I'll keep the old one around for those days when I'm cooking, gardening, or washing the car.

So I really don't get your point. How does Apple shorten life of its devices?
Apple became all about profits now. Expect product life and quality to continue to drop.
Yes, their products are expensive. But I've been happy with product life and quality.
Apple is selling lots of iMacs with a 21 inch screen. And 32" is a monstrosity.
You say "monstrosity" like it's a bad thing.

I really hope we hear some definite air tags soon. I don’t lose things as much as I used to because I have systems in place. I put things in the same place as soon as I get home or to the office.

However if something interrupts my routine they can really get lost. I don’t want to buy more tiles if air tags are around the corner.

Unless they are considerably more expensive than the tile.

I know you weren't replying to me, but thank you anyway; I didn't know this. Can anybody link me to some info about this so that I can learn more? Thanks!
I wouldn’t say it’s as simple as “faster despite needing half or less memory”, but there is truth that iOS apps tend to need less memory, chiefly because they use ARC instead of a generational GC.

Simply put, whereas each Java app on Android has a GC thread running that continuously, in the background, checks if certain variables are no longer needed in memory, iOS apps take an approach where, at compile time (rather than runtime), the use of variables gets analyzed. At runtime, their monkey can then get freed instantaneously; no further checks are needed.

As long as you don’t mind the pro model
Won’t be a pro model exclusive trust me. We are at a different stage in history where masks will prevent deaths and it’s not going away anytime soon. Apple wouldn’t dare play games with the virus like that.

I wouldn’t be so sure of that

Apple don’t NEED to add Touch ID due to this virus. They also wouldn’t develop this based off just the virus. Just Gives them more reason to release it...

Even with the virus you can still use your phone with Face ID or passcode...

iPhone 13

In 2021, we're expecting four iPhone 13 models in the same sizes the iPhone 12 models are available in with two 6.1-inch models, a 6.7-inch model, and a 5.4-inch model. Two of those iPhones will be higher-end "Pro" models and two will be more affordable models.

iphone-12-vs-iphone-12-mini.jpg

Apple is expected to use the same general design, but at least one of the iPhones that's coming could potentially have a portless design with no Lightning port included. Apple has been working toward a portless iPhone and such a device would be limited to charging with Qi-based chargers or a MagSafe charger.

The new iPhones could have 120Hz "ProMotion" displays for smoother performance, along with new camera technology, a faster A15 chip, and an upgraded 5G modem chip from Qualcomm.

There have been a couple rumors indicating Apple is working on iPhones with both Face ID and under-display Touch ID and it's possible 2021 is the year we'll see that dual-biometric technology, but it is early in the rumor cycle so plans could change.

Our iPhone 13 roundup has more detail on what to expect from the new iPhone models coming in 2021.

The big thing for me is, that I really hope that — if Apple removes the lighting port — that they would come up with another way for people who have hearing devices like myself; with Cochlear implants or hearing aids. My cochlear implants has bluetooth, however a lot of people who aren't able to upgrade to the newest hearing devices may not have bluetooth capabilities yet and relies on the lighting port to be able to do things with the phone itself such as a special audio headphones to plug into the cochlear implants to listen to music. Hearing devices are far more expensive than any of the Apple products (except for the Mac Pro and XDR display maybe). I have a Deaf friend who was not able to upgrade to the newest Cochlear implant device due to no insurance and also due to needing doctor's approval. She was in college at the time and aged out under her parent's insurance. When Apple first removed the headphone jack — I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to enjoy listening to my music anymore on my phone because my cochlear implants back then didn't have bluetooth, Thankfully Apple came up with the dongle that you can plug your phone in and listen to music with special audio jacks that goes into the cochlear implant processor to be able to do so. But I do hope Apple will realize that not all Deaf customers has the latest hearing devices with bluetooth capabilities yet.

There’s alot of maybe’s and if’s here hopefully Apple goes full speed ahead and delivers

Sorry, if that was the case, why did they begin to offer AppleCare+ that extends iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches (and my bet is soon Macs), for several more years, rather than the previous hard limit at 2 or 3? Seems to contradict your model.

Oh and we are going to devalue your old Mac if you want to trade it in, so we get more money for Apple stock holders.
Again, statement with no data to support it and lots of other things that say you are wrong (like supporting iOS updates for years longer than anyone else in the industry).

Agree. There is still a lot of potential left to extract from the iPad, Mac, iPhone, Watch lineup, especially the iPad lineup. I could be wrong but I think if SJ was around the iPad would have been much further along with respect to being a genuine laptop replacement. That said I am very intrigued with what Apple has up their sleeves regarding their AR Glasses.
