The current Studio Display stands far too high. Worse, the so-called height adjustable version only goes up -- it doesn't reduce the height at all. What a stupid design. Please make a properly height adjustable monitor ... not one that only goes up.

Pretty trashy u have to chose height adjustable stand and can’t make any changes after purchase. Yes I paid extra for the ability to change the height 4” yes I feel bent over but by a silver fox like Tim so it’s okay it’s only 4 inches ya know.
It’s a bit discriminatory. Long bodied people have to pay more for an ergonomically suitable Apple display.

Hence I never can buy one.

They also need a cheaper display option for Mac Mini users. They could use the same display that’s in the new 24” iMac.

They should have updated the Display alongside the Mac Studio update. It’s ridiculous to make us wait another year.
Agreed. It seemed like the best opportunity.. maybe with Mac Pro?

Either way, I just hope an updated model is out this year and not next

You can swap out the stands after purchase. The self repair store sells separate stands. If you feel comfortable removing the front glass, the process is pretty straightforward.

The current one is perfect for my needs and I got it for a lot less. $1200 at Costco plus extended warranty. It was some time ago. I felt I got a good deal and I just love it.
Same here. Got a refurb VESA model for around the same price and feel it was worth every penny. And with the VESA mount it goes up, down, and all around. Fixed stands are highly overrated.

Apple plans to release a new Studio Display in late 2025 or early 2026, according to Ross Young, a display industry expert and VP at Counterpoint Research.

studio-display-new-purple.jpeg

In a subscriber-only post shared on X last month, Young said the new Studio Display will feature the same 27-inch screen size as the current model, but add mini-LED backlighting. This upgrade would result in increased brightness and higher contrast ratio compared to the current model, which has traditional LED backlighting.

Young did not share any further details, so it is unclear if any other Studio Display specifications would change, such as the refresh rate.

Apple released the Studio Display in March 2022, alongside the first Mac Studio. The standalone display features a 27-inch LCD screen with a 5K resolution, a 60Hz refresh rate, up to 600 nits brightness, a built-in camera and speakers, one Thunderbolt 3 port, and three USB-C ports. In the U.S., the monitor starts at $1,599.

In November 2024, an anonymous listener of the Relay FM tech podcast "Upgrade" claimed that Apple was developing 90Hz display technology that could be used for the next Studio Display. This higher refresh rate would make content like videos and text while scrolling look smoother to the eye, but 90Hz would stop short of the 120Hz refresh rate that iPhones and Macs with ProMotion support can achieve. It is not clear to us if this individual has any established track record with Apple-related rumors, so keep that in mind.

A new Studio Display with mini-LED backlighting has been rumored by a few other sources, including Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The display will likely launch in 2026, according to Gurman.

Young has a pretty good track record with display-related information for future Apple products. For example, he was the first source to reveal the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max would feature 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays, respectively, over a year before the devices launched. He is the founder and former CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, a research firm that was acquired by Counterpoint Research in late 2023.

My biggest wish is that I could still run it at 60 hz with my wife’s M2 Air. I don’t see this happening.

my eye is on the upcoming 32-inch 6K from Asus, which will go for $1200. If Apple uses the same panel and makes one under $2500, I'll get that. But it's unlikely.

IMO, a height/tilt adjustment piece is absolutely necessary, and if they charge an extra $300-500 for that, I won't buy. That's just a joke.

Good but expected news. It would indeed be very disappointing if Apple were to use regular LED technology again for its Studio Display 2. And when the company finally decides to release a new version of its Pro Display XDR, I expect it to feature micro-LED.
Also, the camera should be 4k.

Eh... As a photographer whose fussy about color and making accurate prints from what I see on the screen (first time, every time), I'm 100% happy with my Studio Display.

The only thing that would cause me to think about upgrading would perhaps be a larger screen. But even that's iffy as I have zero complaints with my current ASD.

Regarding brightness... I have no need for more. Though it will go much brighter, mine stays at the 60% mark.
Same here and have mine set similar brightness.
I would like promotion refresh rates though but thats just a nice to have as everyday I look at these ASD monitors and am very happy that I have them.

The only thing that would really tempt me is 2 thunderbolt inputs.

Happy with mine, but open to upgrade if:
  1. Second TB input (a la KVM switch)
  2. Far better mic (mine sucks, but always use AirPods Pro)
  3. Far better Camera w/Desk View
Not really worried about more refresh rate.

Oh, so I guess this isn't much different from most manufacturers who include a HAS and the ability to VESA mount their monitors in the box. Silly me criticizing Apple for making the choice of a stand or VESA mount capability a BTO option.

If you feel comfortable removing the front glass, the process is pretty straightforward.
LOL.

What to expect:

A sky high price with a variety of really expensive options, some of which should already be included.

(height adjust-ability and VESA mounting come to mind)
Yeah but how much is the FREAKIN stand?!?

More importantly is it apple polishing cloth compatible?

I‘m very happy with my studio display with adjustable hight. Using it for productivity when a mac pro display is too small, and for photo editing. Am not a gamer so I don’t care about 120Hz. Sound is great. Camera is good in bright light, otherwise meh. It’s going to be interesting what the upgrade will bring.
