There is no camera coming. Everyone buries the Apple TV behind the TV, or in a cabinet. And it already has a much smarter solution using the iPhone as a camera for FaceTime.
Could be done the way the Kinect worked on an xbox: make it external and put a port for it on the aTV. A bluetooth accessory might work too. Best would be if they just added a usb back and allowed it to support any webcam, it's not like the required frameworks arent already in the OS

For me I would like them keep ethernet port cos I 100% need it get reliable connection. Hopefully price won't be too much.

streaming video is like 20-40Mb/s max, but usually 6-10, so really if they removed ethernet it wouldn't be the end of the world. It's only there for schools and institutions where all the conference rooms are wired or theres tons of concrete walls that mess up radio signal

We've had Apple TVs since my brother gave me his 1st gen one years ago. Currently got the second gen 4K from 2021 (loving the new remote). I'm not sure I can think of anything different I'd like a future one to do. It's pretty much the perfect streaming device for me. We even take it with us when we go on vacation. Takes up basically no room in the luggage. Considering that we aren't likely to replace this one for at least a couple more years I can't even bring myself to gripe about the $200 CAD price. Amortized over 6 or 7 years (possibly more) it's basically free.

Most of what I could imagine improving are more software things than hardware.

The thing that prevents my wife and I from using our first gen Apple tv 4k model is that lack of directional buttons on the remote. Instead ours has the touch pad like remote that is frustrating to use. I may consider the new Apple TV if the remote is like a real tv remote with directional buttons. Doesn't the current model Apple TV remote have the directional buttons now?

If only every Apple TV user already had a wireless device that was perfect for this, and it was already built into tvOS...

It makes a big difference when using Plex locally to play 4k movie files.

There are 3rd party remotes available. Which is additional cost of corse (but bigger so not so easily lost)😞

You can just buy the new siri remote and use it on your current AppleTV. You don't have to replace your current box.

It does have directional buttons.

It would be amazing to make it easier to do video calls with the Apple TV.

Adding an inbuilt camera, however, not sure about that: increases the cost, can be seen as a privacy concern and not everyone would be able to put it in the perfect spot (besides that it would have a better view on top of the TV and not below)

Aside from the privacy issues, a camera on it is pointless for me because mine is stored in a media cabinet with a closed door.

I had no idea, thank you very much.

Think it will have the same price with a newer chip and faster WiFi. Maybe the current model might then retail for $99. Expecting it to be a minor update only.

Hardware AV1 Coding, this is the only thing we need. If this isn't implemented, then it's a huge Fail.

No HDR10+ thanks to lack of hardware level coding is insane.

I am waiting for one. Tempted to buy a new Apple Remote for the current remote that died but it cost basically half the price of the current Apple Tv.

So the latest Apple TV 4K (3rd Gen) is using an "A15 Bionic" chip. Looking at single core benchmarks (Geekbench 6) here are the results:

  • A15 Bionic: ~2300
  • A16 Bionic: ~2600
  • A17 Pro: 2963
  • A18: 3300
  • A18 Pro: ~3300
A jump to an A18 should be pretty nice in just speed, and likely efficiency. I don't recall the changes in codec support, but I think there is hardware decoding support for AV1 as well, and I'd think just overall better decoding for H265 and whatever.

If they can add Wifi 7 and keep ethernet I will likely upgrade my two current Apple TV 4K's. The issue I have with them are for some videos I stream from Plex from my NAS the Apple TV starts to get too hot and then it struggles with my content and everything gets super juttery. This only happens because I rip full Blu-ray Discs and direct stream at the full bitrate, and even then only happens on some older content where the bitrate is very high due to noise of the source (like the Jurassic Park movies). If I can just get better processing efficiency this should negate my issues.

As for a camera, that would be of no use since my hardware is behind the TV (and I also would never FaceTime using the TV). I don't see why this would be a thing because it would increase cost whereas the rumor says cost will possible reduce. I could see the option for an add-on camera to buy separately, but even then using continuity camera with a phone or iPad seems like it may be a better choice.

all i want is 120hz/VRR support for tvOS, and maybe upgrade the ethernet to 2.5gb

cameras are nonsense and just another privacy invasion
They should make them like this then the "eye"camera neck can be articulated and follow you around as you squirm to keep your privacy.

That i agree upon. I hope the Ethernet connector supports the faster Cat 6 or 6a connection for up to 10 Gbps speeds, especially now with more and more users on fiber Internet (and soon DOCSIS 4.0 Internet).
This might be more of a tvOS thing, but it could be hardware. I'd like to be able to connect via wifi as a fallback if the ethernet connection is connected and fails. Right now, it completely removes all appearances of wifi in Settings if the cable is connected.
