What to Expect From the Next Apple TV

Haven’t an article that worthless in a long while. What about codec support? New functions?

I know Apple won't do it but I would love AppleTV to have a way to attach an external drive so I could have all my movie library locally and Apple have a software like Plex/Infuse to access it in a simple way.

Passthrough audio is finally on the way to Apple TV

We've confirmed at WWDC that tvOS 26 is getting passthrough audio, which could allow a higher quality listening experience by disabling audio preprocessing on the Apple TV hardware, before hand-off to a sound system.

We’ll see how this plays out! Still unclear if formats like TrueHD will be supported.

Also an excellent example of how most aTV shortcomings are software choices that don't require new hardware to solve

I have a NAS and it works OK, I was just hoping Apple could make a solution for local libraries but I know it will never happen.

make it a tiny stick. Having boxes with many wires under ones tv is so two decades ago.

I hope the new ATV will have:
- a USBC port for a camera to put on top of the TV (are webcams still USB-A? I hope not)
- an optional nice/inconspicuous-looking privacy-focused camera
- a new remote with a small speaker for locating it when lost, and a better mic for the karaoke feature

I would also like an ATV stick, basically an Airplay HDMI bus-powered stick.

what do you mean by a privacy focused camera?

I would prefer some kind of manual slide cover, but that can always be a third party add on. Apple will probably at most do a hardwired LED. I know a lot of webcams have LEDs but not sure they’re hardwired. Motorized rotation to a blind position is another option, but probably too complicated.

You'd run into processing issues, overheating on transcoding, they need to take a page from the Nvidia shield.
