I'm gonna be gettign some X-mas money... for x-mas, so any ideas for what to buy for TV shows on DVD? I like a lot of stuff, but not anime, but I do liek futurama... just throw out ideas

Comedy: The Office (UK version, although the US copy isn't too bad), Family Guy, Arrested Development, Newsradio

Drama: Mi-5, 24, House, The West Wing

Battlestar Galactica, Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis

and what the hell do you have against anime, this worlds second greatest thing next to SF

As somebody who owns more DVD's than he should...

I would recommend subscribing to a service like NetFlix and renting the first disc of many shows that you are interested in. Call it a sampler if you want. Don't purchase TV shows you've already seen all of as most likely you won't watch them anyway. By sampling a bunch of different shows you can find ones you might truely enjoy as opposed to buying random shows.

That's a great method! Although, I purchase DVDs of tv shows I like so that I CAN watch them whenever I feel like it, and I usually do.

Get the full set of Blackadder on DVD. Hilarious, witty and beloved by all attractive and intelligent people like myelf.

If you don't like Blackadder, then I'm afraid your taste in entertainment stinks of Baldrick's dirty laundry bag. There is no hope for you, and you will probably enjoy Survivor or some such drivel.

Have a nice day. :)

I've never been one for getting TV series on DVD until this year, and then have bought:
Scrubs (S1&S2)
Battlestar Galactica (miniseries & S1)
Family Guy (S1&S2)
Definately will watch them time and again. Just hope BSG gets a good run, and ends well unlike some other Sci-Fi series...

thousands of hours of entertainment

I won't state the obvious which is any animated series on Fox.
Yes, Black Adder is great. And for some contrast compair that to Hugh Laurie's performance on House M.D.
Red Dwarf - smeg, can't think of a funny quote
Homicide: Life of the Street - Best cop show ever!
Angel - better than Buffy Spin-off
Highlander - Only a few seasons were actually good. I forget which ones, but they were way better than the movies.
Nowhere Man - Just saw this on Amazon. The government erases this guy from existance. And it's not such a wonderful life. Somehow his friends, coworkers, family, and loved ones are all in on it. Early UPN series back when they actually tried to make something original.
Farscape - Just started watching this in syndication in the fall. Man is it good. So far I've only seen season 1. There are 4 seasons and it ended with a miniseries. Be careful which edition you choose. There are 3 of them. The most recent editions are splitting each season into 3 sets. Does any one know which sets are the best?
And I know you said no anime, but the first season of the Animated Batman Series from the mid 90s is burned into my brain as being very stylish and mature. I think it actually originally premiered in prime time around the Simpson's time slot. It was a work of art. Later seasons became more kiddy.

I just ordered Stargate Atlantis Season 1 on DVD (hope to get it Friday). If you're into sci-fi at all, I think it's a great show.

I've heard "Firefly" is also very good, but I haven't seen it yet... along with the followup movie "Serenity."

Damn I wish I lived in America sometimes. the second series hasn't even started over here yet.
Mind you, were will be on a par with the States with the Stargates when they restart in Jan....

Twin Peaks: Season 1

For me, comedies also stand up to repeated viewing. Seinfeld, Frasier, Cheers, Curb Your Enthusiasm...

The Mighty Boosh
Black Books
Spaced

There - three relatively unheard of, but quality, British comedies. Buy them.

The X-Files series is being rereleased starting Jan 31st, 2006. You might wait until then to get them. They are being released cheaper so you'll save some coin. I believe content wise they're the exact same though.

Series that I own and like fairly well are....

24
Dead Like Me (cancelled... :( But it's incredibly funny I think)
Battlestar Galactica (haven't gotten around to watching more than the mini-series and 1 episode but I really liked it... just have other things going on)
Friends
Carnivale (it's okay but in my opinion it drags on way too long for a show)
ER
Firefly (great fun!)
House M.D. (love House's humor)
Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Angel (I don't own it yet because I'm waiting for a boxed set hopefully)
Lost
Scrubs
Wonderfalls
