Anyone who wants an 950VA APC can save money and get their generic unit:

This briefly describes the unit. You can search for sites selling them.

When I purchased mine about 2 years ago it was around $80 USD.

Just out of interest, after two years, have you tried testing it recently by putting the machine to sleep, yanking the power plug of the UPS from the wall and tried waking the computer? Ditto a restart? A lot of marginal UPSs work fine when new, but after the battery has aged a year or two, can't cut the mustard.

I just tested my UPS. It's a 685VA (390W) CyberPower.

Attached to it is a stock Mac Pro 2008 Single Quad with a 17" ACD. From sleep, I pulled the plug, and fired up the computer. It fired up and the Energy Saver menu shows 13 minutes of power.

Hey everyone just a quick question. I found an open box like-new Rocket Fish (skeptical) UPS 1000VA with backup software although it says compatible with 10.3 . Has LCD for monitoring, 8 battery back outlets. For $60 bucks. Is this OK? Will it work for a 5-10 minute battery cycle just to safely shut my 12-core down ? I'd need to pick it up quick so if someone can tell me if that's going to be Ok or if I should shell out 140 for an ACP system with slightly better ratings.

Open box no-name unit ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ sounds like a waste of $'s. If you go that route hopefully all you will lose is some money.

I would never, ever , defend Best Buy however rocketfish is their house brand and I know a large UPS manufacturer made the device, either cyberpower or APC. It's only open box because the box itself was damaged. It was never purchased

How long on bats will that unit last with your hex and ACD? You might be pushing the on-line time pretty low with that UPS. ???

cheers

I don't need continuous power. I just need surge protection and the ability to shut down correctly. the system shuts down in about ten seconds so I'll be all set. it's my personal PC, not a business device.
