Macintosh Classic: System 6
iMac G3 Rev. A: Mac OS 8.6
iMac G3 Rev. C: OS X 10.3.9
iBook G3 Clamshell: Mac OS 9.2.1
iBook G3 (White): OS X 10.4.11
iBook G4: OS X 10.4.11
eMac: OS X 10.4.11
MacBook: OS X 10.6.8

I've also got an external HDD with a 10.5 partition, and another with a 10.7 partition, but I really dislike both of these OS X versions; I keep them around for the rare occasion when I need a more "modern" OS for a specific task.
Nice collection, but surfing the web with Tiger or Leopard doesn't seem to secure...

In my collection, I tend to dual-boot whenever possible: The earliest OS the system supports and the latest OS the system supports.

So for the iMac G4 on my desk next to my daily-use Intel iMac, I have the original OS 9.2.2+OS X 10.1.5 on one partition, and 10.4.11 on the other.
My Power Mac G4 (Digital Audio) with dual 1 GHz CPU upgrade has 9.2.2 and 10.0.4 on one drive, 10.5.8 on the other. I tend to boot it to 10.5 most often, although since getting the iMac, that is rarer.
My Power Mac G3 (Blue & White) is my "load 'er up!" system. It has three hard drives, that between them have every Mac OS it is capable of running, from 8.6 to 10.4.11. (Yes, I even have a "Mac OS X Public Beta" partition - but I have to remember to change the clock manually and disconnect Ethernet before booting it, since it refuses to run if the clock is past May 2001.)
My Power Mac G4 Cube is a recent addition, and only has 10.5.8 on it at present. I need to find software restore discs for it to put it on its original load.

More secure than some, not as secure as others. For Tiger, I'm fairly certain TenFourFox is still being updated to acceptable security standards. I would imagine there's a few more options for Leopard, couldn't say for certain. (Any time I ever have to boot into Leopard, I don't get on the web.)

Leopard on my Mac Mini, Tiger on my recently acquired iBook G4.

I'd be running Leopard on the iBook but funds are tight and I can't afford to upgrade the ram from it's 256mb stock right now, frigging DDR prices. XD

Most of my machines run Leopard, and if they are a G3 or a low end G4 they run Tiger. I right now only have one machine with Tiger! I sold my other G3 systems.

PowerMac G5: 10.5.8
iMac G5 iSight: 10.5.8
iMac G5 1.6GHz: 10.5.8
Mac mini G4 1.33GHz: 10.5.8
PowerMac G3 B&W: 10.4.11

So, lots and lots of Leopard! The mini runs it better than the 1.6GHz iMac which looks similar to tiger in terms of little hacks n stuff.

I've got two PPC machines, an iBook and a PowerBook G4. Each has six partitions and run the following OSs:

iBook: Mac OS 9.2.2, 10.0.4 Cheetah, 10.1 Puma, 10.2 Jaguar, 10.3 Panther, 10.4.11 Tiger

PowerBook: Mac OS 9.2.2, 10.1 Puma, 10.2 Jaguar, 10.3 Panther, 10.4 Tiger, 10.5 Leopard

10.4.11 on the iBook has actual applications installed, preferences set how I like them. All the other installs are factory-fresh. So now, when I want to check some random thing in an old version of Mac OS, I can do so nice and easy :)

10.5.8

Was going to run Tiger on one HDD, Leopard on the other... but running on a G5 I figured I'd use the second HDD for media and just roll with Leopard.

I used Tiger for a year or so on my old Intel iMac (24", nVidia 7300GT - what a POS graphics card that was!) and always felt a bit more comfortable after upgrading to Leopard.

Leopard seems to run merrily enough to me, and doesn't feel *particularly* outdated at all. Am running Leopard on my main machine nowadays and have zero complaints.

G5 Dual 2.7 - Tri-boot (soon to be quad boot) 10.5, 10.5, 10.4 (hopefully another 10.5 partition soon)

G5 Dual 1.8 - 10.5. I might put another 10.5 and/or 10.4 install on this.

iMac G5 - 10.5

G4 Dual 1.25 - 10.4. Will be wiping and installing OS9 soon.

eMac 1.0 - 10.3. Has original installer disks and all documentation

iBook G3 900MHz - 10.4

iMac G4 800MHz - 10.4

iMac G3 500MHz - OS9

iMac G3 400MHz - OS9

Update: Just for giggles, I loaded Mac OS X Public Beta on the Cube:
file.php

(Complete with purely graphical, not-a-menu Apple logo in the center of the Menu Bar.)

And yes, that's showing the Internet Archive caches for the G4 Cube and OS X Public Beta web pages on IE 5, along with the "About this Mac" dialog.

Well...
Based on all the machines I use regularly (which I call mine) and the machines I've arranged for my family, I'm pretty sure you can see some general trends:
(in order of age)
iBook G3 600 MHz (Late 2001, maxed out); 10.4.11 (my backup and rough travel notebook)
PowerMac G4 1,0 Ghz DP (MDD, see sig); 10.5.7 Server (my general purpose server)
PowerBook G4 1,0 Ghz (Al, 1,0 Ghz); 10.4.11 (dad's "typewriter")
PowerMac G4 1,25 Ghz (MDD2003); 10.5.8 Server (former backup server, now guest machine at my parents')
PowerBook G4 1,5 Ghz (12", maxed out with SSD); 10.4.11 My mother-in-law's first ever own machine
MacBook Pro 2,0 (Core Duo); 10.4.11 (my first intel mac, nowadays mom's machine)
Mac Pro Octo (3,1, see sig); 10.6.8 (my main workstation)
MacBook Air 1,86 Ghz (nVidia); 10.6.8 (the better half's machine)
MacBook Pro 2,66 (Mid-2010, 13", also in sig); 10.6.8 (my current laptop)

You might see some oddities...
1) 10.5.7 on the server? Yeah, 10.5.8 just did not play nice.
2) 10.4.11 on the early MBP? Yeah, the idea being that my n00b parents would have the same OS, so that they can "support" each other.

with a fair share of PowerPC machines and my mantra is stay between 10.4 (Tiger) and 10.5 (Leopard). Going down from Tiger is worthless for me. And Leopard is the last Mac OS designed with PowerPC chips in mind....

My mantra is similar:
10.4 for anything running a G4
10.5 for anything running a G5
10.6 for anything else which runs it

Naturally there are caveats: a low spec'ed G5 might run better on Tiger, a high spec G4 might jive with leopard. Whether the mantra can be extended to G3 and 10.3 I cannot say, as my experience with 10.3 is limited.

I've tried out both Lion and ML, and prefer SL over both. I'll try out Mavericks (even though I hate the name, and you can't even abbreviate it), but do not expect much.

RGDS,

10.4.11 currently..

I had to go back to 10.4 here in the G4 PB in my sig as I am having the memory slot issues akin to these macs. I have 1.5 gigs installed, but most of the time the PB only sees one. With 1.5 gigs or above? Leopard is great on this book. But nerfed to only a gig? Even with the SSD and what not? 10.4 is the only way to go for me atm.

Not that I am complaining. With monolingual run and a few other tricks she is still a speedy beast that gets most everything I need done. If I want to play games and what not? I head upstairs to the mini in my sig, or the C2D mini I recently acquired.

But in keeping with the PPC theme of the thread, if anyone has a Dual Core G5 or even a Quad they are looking to sell, let me know. I have been with MR for more than a few years and still do not have access to the market place forum, and for some reason here in TX where I am now? There really are not a lot of PPC macs to be found on Criags list and what not.

Try ebay.

RGDS,

Jaguar (10.2.x) and Panther (10.3.x) I dont like so much. But Panther is more usable IMHO. Also, I dont like the Mavericks name (but I dont know too much about big cats, Tiger Shark maybe...?....:D) Like 10.6 and like more 10.7 that 10.8 Would try Maverick when I have enough spare time.....

iMac G3 600--OS 10.4.11 and 9.2.2
iMac G3 700--OS 10.4.11 only
PowerMac G4 733--10.5.8
PowerMac G5 dual 1.8--10.5.8
Mac mini Core i5 (Mid 2011 with discrete graphics)--10.8.4

I used to have an old iivx that ran System 7, but that was a horribly long time ago and it was a work computer that didn't belong to me.

I have a Mac IIci at home that runs System 7.5.3. :)

I have Kaleioscope installed with the Platinum theme so it appears to be running OS9. :D

Incidentally, my IIci has the full loadout of 128mb. My wife actually spotted the ram sticks all by themselves at the Goodwill one time. I brought them home and low and behold the IIci saw them all.

I've been running Leopard on my TiBook, my main machine. I decided to give up a lot of Tiger's advantages just for more available apps.

I do use MacOS 9 apps occasionally and I'm hoping to pick up an iMac G3 for dual-booting Tiger and MacOS 9.

BTW guys it's my birthday :D
