86 votes and still no one with iPad as their first Apple product!

Are others surprised (I'm a bit surprised) or does it take a few years of Apple product ownership before you become drawn into the world of MacRumors.com???

It seems reasonable to me that people wouldn't just jump into a Mac via a tablet.

That's asking a bit much on faith or word of mouth, IMO.

Maybe. But I'm also surprised that only <5% came to Apple ownership via iPhone. But this obviously says something about the MacRumors demographic. Conduct this survey on the street and I'd guess this would be much more.

Yeah, a lot of the people on here have been using Macs for decades. I've used them all my life...

Wow, the poll results are astonishing! The fact that over 44% (at the time of this post) of people bought their first Mac due to Intel compatibility says a lot about how correct it was for Apple to run Windows! Simply amazing market research! :apple:

I think you may have misread the options. The results indicate that the first Apple product for 43% of readers (at time of this post) was a Mac without Intel processor. But since this is about Apple products and not just Macs, it's not really possible to judge how important Intel compatibility is for Mac ownership from this poll. However I'd be curious to know the answer to that. For me its very important. I probably wouldn't own a Mac if it was not possible to run Windows smoothly in a virtual machine.

Agreed.

A lot of people on here are also older, which means that they were likely to get into Macs earlier, so that was their first, and then from then moved into the buying Apple stuff.

For me?

>iPod touch 2G (Not the 3G 2G, the 2G 2G :) I was one of the first people in my school with an iPod touch :D)

>White iBook G3 Dual-USB
>Snow White iMac 600Mhz
>Tangerine, Lime, Graphite iMacs
>Power Mac G3 B&W

Not a single Mac released after 2002 ;)

The first in my house was an iPod mini we bought our daughter in 2005. My first personally was a black iPod iPod with video.

Powerbook Wallstreet 266Mhz running OS8 I think. I took it up to Panther via XPostFacto.
Followed that by the last Powerbook G4, an iBook G4 and a Mac Mini G4 before I went Intel. The iBook was my first Applestore puchase. In the good old days you could walk into the Regent St store every few weeks or so and take your pick of refurbs/refreshes, all sold in original packaging.

Mine was the first blue and white G3 PowerMac. I sold it about 18 months later and bought a Dell PC... then I bought a 12" Powerbook and loved it so much I weened myself off PCs and haven't had one at home now for ages.

I'd agree. I work at University and we're seeing a lot of academics and staff using their budgets to buy Macs now rather than PCs. Most of them because of their positive experience with their iPhone.

I'm stunned by the amount of iPads we're seeing staff using. The IT Dept party line is that we dont support iPads and they're still being viewed as toys but staff are buying them in droves... and using them. Seeing a lot of people sat at desks typing on iPads.

I was given one of those big colourful iMacs, couldn't do much with it though!
Then I got an iPhone (original) - and at that time I was in College doing Design, so I needed....wanted a Mac! - so I shamelessly used my Acer Laptop (which was perfect for it) and got myself a Hackintosh!
Then I saved up my money and bought a MacBook Pro :)
Then another....and another...!

I used Macs in high school and my wife was a Mac person when we started dating in college. However, the first Apple product I ever bought was a Ti Powerbook in 2003. It's been all Mac ever since and now we own a variety of Apple products.
