I don't personally see the point in multi-view on a 5" device - I would never use it. Likewise I really hate widgets other than weather/time so the idea of sticking loads of them on my lock screen is redundant to me. Air gestures / smart pause / smart scrolling would be left permanently turned off.

A 5" device is perfect for multi-window. It isn't a feature to show off screen real estate, you realize? It's a feature that allows you to do two things at once. Say, you are getting an address in a text message, then want to link that to Google Maps. Now you can open both, still continue chatting about directions and info, while looking up the actual directions and info. Not saying you have to use it this way, but that's just one example.

As for the widgets, it's up to you to customize (aka remove) if you want.

I do find it ironic, though, that you find widgets to be redundant and clutter-ful, but will accept BlinkFeed which is permanently on one of your home screens. Forever. Unless, of course, you use a different launcher, but if that's an acceptable solution for you, why is it not also a solution to get rid of TouchWiz?

Z, please, don't talk to me about innovation. Do I have to remind you again that your application of innovation for Apple is different than your application of innovation when it comes to its competitors, particularly Samsung?

Having said that, I agree that implementation is important. There are people who find Samsung's Smart features useful and reliable, and there are other who don't. How much experience have you had with it yourself? I've had none so I won't speak much about how reliable they are. But again, this is how technology works. You think Apple gets everything new right the first time? Apple Maps? iOS keyboard (that gave birth to the internet phenom known as "Damn You iPhone Auto Correction")? Yet, where are you telling us how gimmicky or how much of a failure in usefulness these features are? I'm sure others can think of more.

Again, you don't have to call these Samsung features innovation if you don't want to (but also again, we know how you determine what "innovation" is when it comes to anything non-Apple so it makes this point almost irrelevant) but at least there's a company out there trying and pushing. And I'm going to cheer them on despite what growing pains there obviously will be (this is cutting-edge technology. You're foolish if you think it'll be right right away).

I only wish I could cheer Apple on for the same efforts, but when I see ads for Panoramic cameras, or auto noise-cancellation, well... there's not much to be excited about.

The day I see an iPhone demonstration that is as robust as this, then I'll get excited.

Well that's because I use my phone for Flipboard, currents and Pulse everyday along with Facebook open and twitter..... So having Blinkfeed there doing it for me is grand. A feature is only useful if you have a use for it. A handy hub for my news and social feeds without having to go into 4 or 5 different apps that I know I use is more appropriate to me than multi-view.

Blink view isn't really a widget though, its part of the UI. 🙂.



As for you example of multi-view (I still see no point personally).

If I wanted to copy and paste a message text from one place to the other I'd just open app 1 select and copy text, open app two and paste. They'd both be running still.

The other way I have to open 1 app, then open the Samsung multi-view window, then open the second app and then still have to copy and paste from one into the other which could be more fiddly because I have less screen real estate, especially if the keyboard comes on top of one of the windows....

It's just seems unnecessary and adding another set of problems or things to do in the process....


But one mans killer feature is clearly not another's - that's the benefit of choice I guess.

There has been multiple times I've been in tapatalk and I'm quoting someone who quoted me. I like to see what exactly he/she is quoting but I can't do that in tapatalk while I'm replying. So I'll need to open it in a browser and switch back and forth. It would be nice to see the entire conversation in multiple windows.

That depends what kind of barometer sensor is used. I doubt a solid-state sensor is going to use much power. And like the gps receiver, it is only turn on when needed.

I'd like to see the HTC One give Samsung a serious run for their money. That phone is gorgeous.

But what will be the key to success? Whoever captures the emerging markets, there's billions of $$ awaiting to be tapped into. Will Apple release a low cost iPhone to get this? I doubt it, they're a premium device maker (IMO) maybe Samsung will flood them with cheap Galaxy's. Hopefully Nokia with their 520 and 620 earn their way back.

But time will tell and we will see.

Again, I'm not a huge Samsung fan, and if you see what I've written in the S4 threads or in the S4 vs HTC One threads, you'll see there are things I'm not thrilled about with the S4, but really, watch this video.

Lol because people that want to read the DA of the atmosphere will use it for 6 hours straight,Ill enable the sensor for 5 seconds and look at the pressure and be done with it for the day,its not like there is a tornado in my back yard and changing the earths pressure every 5 min for me to keep checking the barometer.

again,this feature is a tool for some and useless for others,people who tune cars and run 116 oct race fuel and e85 corn juice will love knowing the exact pressure where they are for there car,the higher the pressure the more o2 molecules in the air and the more power you will make and you can compensate knowing the baro on how close to the edge you are with your tuning.

I cant tell you how many times at the track I would go on weather.com to look up the humidity,density altitude and baro pressure for that exact time and try to guess it in the exact area of the track im at

Here's the precious list of GS4 features (things the GS3 can't do):

Air Gestures: Refers to hand movements made above the phone's display, without coming into contact with the display, that controls the phone. Common gestures include waving your hand over the display to skip a track or waving left and right to switch between open web pages in the browser. These gestures only work with specific Samsung apps.

Only works in certain Samsung apps. The ONLY application I can see is if you have dirty hands and want to see something on your screen - otherwise, hovering your hand over the screen seems much more cumbersome than simply typing on it.....this tech is better suited for like an "Iron Man" table or window.

Air View: Like the stylus on the Galaxy Note 2, you can hover over the display with your finger to view information about certain pieces of content. For example, hovering your finger over an email shows you a longer preview without opening the message; hovering your finger over a date on the calendar shows you a quick view of what to expect on that day.

Again - same as the first. I can either hover my finger over an email and wait for it to detect the finger and show me a preview, or just tap the damn email.....

Drama Shot: Camera feature that shoots 12 photos at once and shows you a time-lapse of all the action in those photos combined into one picture.

Ok? I'm sure there's someone out there who thinks this is cool....I'm also sure there's an app out there that does this already - plenty of time lapse apps on both app stores.

Dual Camera: Activates both the rear camera and the front camera, so that the photographer can superimpose himself or herself into the subject of the photo. Samsung gave as an example someone watching football superimposing himself or herself into the game.

At first I thought this was going to be really cool - but the application of it let me down. When they started talking about it I expected the front camera to take the photo of you and ACTUALLY put you in the photo, but instead your head is put in a bubble in the corner....worthless

Dual Video Call: While video-chatting with someone, you can show them both your face and the view from your rear camera while you chat.

Ok? Wonder how much battery drains using both cameras to shoot video at the same time takes....seems pretty worthless to me.

Group Play: Allows multiple Galaxy S4 owners in close proximity to join a private network in which they can, among other things, play a game.

Gamecenter - though I suppose I could see some benefit in creating an ad-hoc network if you don't have reception and want to play with all your GS4 friends who are within 10 feet of you.....

S Health: New app that acts as a fitness tracker and food diary. The Galaxy S4 has a built-in pedometer to count your steps, and you can take photos of your meals each day to keep count of your calories and eating habits. Samsung will also sell a fitness bracelet, a digital scale and fitness belt to measure blood pressure, pulse, glucose levels and weight for those interested.

Like this hasn't been done a billion times with countless apps and accessories...

S Translator: An app in which you can input any of 10 languages and receive a translation, either spoken or in text. Also works to translate text on your email, text messages and a few other Samsung apps.

Google Translate.

S Voice Drive: New hands-free function for drivers that allows the driver to operate the phone with his or her voice.

Siri.

Samsung Adapt Display: The Galaxy S4 "learns" what you are viewing and adjusts the display's brightness accordingly. If the phone senses you are reading an article, for example, it will illuminate from a more muted brightness.

Auto-Brightness - most of the apps on the iPhone do this for you already (the Kindle app has its own brightness settings, Passbook will illuminate to max for the best possible scanning environment.

Samsung Adapt Sound: Similar to Adapt Display, your audio can adapt to the content you're listening to (video, music, etc.) and optimize itself to that content.

Optimize itself to what IT thinks I want to hear.....but not necessarily what I want....does no one else see this as LESSENING choice? (I realize I can always turn these features off....)

Samsung Optical Reader: Camera feature that can snap a photo of a business card and import that information into a new contact in your phonebook. Was not working as of demo time, but Samsung reps assured me it would be fixed by the time it shipped to consumers.

The one feature that seems useful didn't even work during the demo....this isn't some crazy new tech - simply a software implementation which likely can be done through an app on another phone (Apple added redemption of gift cards via the camera on Macs recently)

Samsung Smart Pause: When watching a video, the front camera can sense when your eyes move away from the screen and pause the video automatically if you aren't looking.

So is the front camera on the whole time? Battery drain? Is it that hard to press a pause button? What if I don't want it to pause when I look away?

Samsung Smart Scroll: When you are reading an email or article on the web, you can scroll up and down by tilting the device up and down rather than swiping with your finger.

🙄 this one takes the cake.....so instead of swiping, I can tilt the phone to scroll.....REVOLUTIONARY!

Samsung WatchON: A built-in IR sensor lets you control your television set with your smartphone. Comes with a standard remote and a program guide depending on your cable provider. Can also control certain cable boxes and DVD players.

HTC One does this (I believe HTC has had this feature in their smartphones for a while - among others).

Share Music: When linked with Group Play, multiple Galaxy S4s can work as surround sound speakers, all playing the same song at once.

Ahh so here's the "surround sound" cell phone speakers....lol

Sound & Shot: Allows you to record up to nine seconds of audio at the time of taking each photo.

HTC One has this as well - among others.

Story Album: Templates that allow you to create a digital photo journal or scrapbook from a certain event. You can also then order and print out that story album for a fee.

My HP printer can do this for me....I don't think anyone is arguing this is innovative - just happened to be on the list I found.

The best part about most of these features is the fact that most of this stuff only works with other GS4s or with specific Samsung apps....talk about limited. You want to jump all over Apple for having a "proprietary cable" or for locking down their features - Samsung is doing EXACTLY the same thing....

I can say with 100% certainty, I have absolutely ZERO desire for ANY of these features to be built into iOS 7 or the iPhone 5. If they are, they better be easily turned off and not bog down the OS....I prefer choosing the software that goes on my phone (via apps) rather than the OS coming pre-loaded with all this nonsense.

How much space does TouchWiz take on a device? Say I bought a 16 gb GS4, how much of that space would be usable for me? (I know all about sd cards....I'm talking on the phone storage).

From my experience, multi-windows was more of a "for show feature." There only only a few apps that support it, and I never really multi-task in that way. I guess for a video on youtube it would be more useful. The best feature I have used in a long time is the s-pen on the note 2. That is so practical. I used it day 1 for taking down a confirmation number while on the phone. I ended up disabling multi window because I always hit the little tab that sticks out.

There only only a few apps that support it.

This is actually changing rapidly. Theres a thread on XDA forums that lists all apps confirmed to work with multi (the OP hasn't been updated in forever, you have to go through the posts), recent additions are for instance Whatsapp+ (paid version) and Poweramp.

It only takes a few lines of extra code in the APK to make any app compatible (there's a simple guide on XDA) so probably most major apps will follow suit soon. The feature is getting more useful by the day 🙂

Wrong. I actually quite like my Nexus 4 - have said so multiple times and I've praised Android as a whole on multiple occasions. I dislike Samsung for a variety of reasons - of my 5 smartphone criteria (personal, subjective opinions) they don't meet hardly any (build quality and AMOLED being two main ones). On the other hand I feel like their marketing is purposefully antagonistic and rather than marketing the features of the phones or even against the features of another phone they belittle the users of those other phones. Also - that "list of features" between the GS3 and iPhone 5?? Complete FUD and lies....

And I know you'll take what I said to mean "I think anything Apple does is great".....but that would be wrong as well. I know very well they make ridiculous statements - saying iOS is the most advance mobile OS and other nonsense - difference being those are subjective statements to begin with. Ok? So any phone without a presentation shouldn't be considered? If there had been an HTC presentation I would've watched it. For me, the HTC One hits more of my smartphone criteria (namely superior build to the GS4 IN MY OPINION and I prefer LCD to AMOLED). Notice I also said "likely" - my contract isn't up until September - plenty of time to listen to all the reviews and make my decision - I'll also check out the Phone X if it comes out before then.

I have a Nexus 4 - its my personal, daily used phone.....yes I also have an iPhone 5 and if I had to pick one to keep I would pick the iPhone. This is my personal preference, but doesn't mean I don't enjoy both platforms.

As for your list - you just gave me a list of things YOU want in a smartphone...

older os - not by much - I'm on 4.2.2 with my N4 and will continue to use that phone, as my decision doesn't need to be made until September I will monitor how HTC does with updates, as that IS on my criteria list.

no micro sd card - don't care

no removable battery - don't care

no support in the dev community - don't root, don't care

worst camera - ? I've read plenty of reviews praising the camera in low light. In any case, I'll use my iP5 camera anyway as its arguably the best on the market (I don't care for WP8 or Nokia's build - but I know they have some sick cameras as well)

worst screen - this is an opinion. I personally prefer LCD's accurate colors over the saturation of AMOLED. Again, that's my preference and I don't expect you to share it. Just know I don't agree.

smaller battery - I will be monitoring how the battery life does on the One before making my decision, but if it lasts a day with 5-6 hours of usage, that's all I need. Heck my iPhone 5 has a 1440 mAh battery and it outlast pretty much every phone out there save for the Note series.....don't get caught up in the spec numbers

slower cpu/gpu - lol....by very little. Again, my iPhone (and Nexus 4 for that matter) gets by plenty fine with a "slower CPU".....if the phone runs smoothly (jury is still out on the GS4) I don't need to have the phone with the highest clock speed....there's more to it than that.

thicker,wider,taller and heavier then the gs4 - the build (looks, design) trump this for me. I'd rather have the slightly thicker unibody build of the One than the polycarbonate and fake metal of the GS4. Again, another preference. But it's my prerogative to have such preferences.

I couldn't care less if you like the GS4 - it will sell tons no doubt. But to say its some magical innovative device is absurd. Likewise, belittling every other phone on the market because of some spec sheet war is idiotic.

Given I can't get an intelligent response to any of my challenges to Samsung's supposed superiority and innovative-ness, I'd say I'm not the one trolling. Simply offering arguments you can't answer - which in turn pisses you off enough to just call me a troll to get me to go away.

Despite what you've said and think, I don't think I'm a completely objective smartphone owner. I characterize myself this way:

I am an Apple fan. I primarily use Apple products. If I had to choose between an iOS device and Android device, I would pick iOS. However, my overall preference is to use both, and I have been afforded that luxury by way of my work paying for a phone. As I've used my Nexus 4 I've grown to like and appreciate many things about it. But I also recognize that overall, the decision on which is best must be made with a subjective component. I also realize that BOTH have faults and need work - like any and all technology.

Touche - still, I wonder what your definition of "huge fan" is as you seem to be quite the cheerleader for them....

I'm definitely not saying there's anything wrong with that. Just funny and somewhat ironic you don't realize it. You know its entirely possible to be a fan (even a huge fan) of something and realize it/they have faults.....nothing is 100%.

I'm the first to admit I don't like Samsung - I think its ironic that people who make fun of "iSheep" are the same ones being sucked in by Samsung. Are any of my comments not accurate? Is this not the features list being discussed as heralding in the future of smartphone technology - putting the "smart" in smartphone?

And I won't buy the phone 😉 Though to be quite honest, I was considering it before the GS4 announcement underwhelmed.....if they had blown my socks off (like everyone was expecting) I might have actually been in the Samsung camp.....

Oh well - HTC One likely for me.

My question for you is you say you don't like Samsung, but had they blown you away you might be in their camp. Is that the same case for Apple? If they don't blow you away then your not in their camp? Also did HTC blow you away? Case that has to be one of the more disappointing phones I seen yet. Sure it looks good, but with sense 5 and that news feed thing I really can't see it being worth a crap. Like I have said before the look and build quality can only take you so far.
