Full x64 ISA and 10.6.

It will most likely be 10.6 (Snow Leopard)... but running on ARM (32-bit) with the Cocoa Touch iPhone GUI on top, and running some form of App store apps.

Tablet PC's are a big fail, so this device, if it exists, will distance itself as far as possible from having any PC or Finder desktop in order to succeed.

Lol @ these responses, people seem to already know what this new device is going to offer without Apple even introducing it. Why does everyone seem to think this is just going to be a normal Tablet PC? I guess nobody remembers that comment someone made about this "media pad," saying that its in a completely new category of its own that doesn't even exist yet, and will have everyone else saying "damn why didn't we think of that"

Especially given all these comments Tim Cooks been saying about netbooks, you should be able to see by now that Apples not going to just give us an ordinary Tablet/netbook without new Apple innovations.

You can't see the point of the Tablet, because you haven't seen yet what new innovations Apple has for this category...

I don't think it needs to have a killer feature it just needs to work well, something that none of the others have
I was thinking of something just like the "macbook touch"
I would buy one right away for school so I can handwrite, I've never been a good typer
So it would need to have a stylus but I also want the same kind of screen as iphone
I wouldn't mind having a 3g/4g service as long as you don't have to get it otherwise not for me
All I want is a macbook with a touchscreen that doesn't cost 2200$ like the axitron modbook

This thing will more than likely reshape the way we think of media delivery. From music to books to magazines. Too many people write off iTunes as a non-profitable venture. They know their monopoly, and they want to use it.

personal opinion: every one knows that PC World is anti-Apple. No credit to any thing they have to say.

killer feature: it is designed by Apple.

what will it do: it will change the way we do something... but we do not know yet what it is that we don't have. If Apple makes it, we obviously need it to change our lives... :)

Killer Features ... hmmm, maybe it could have a built-in shuriken dispenser, and spring-loaded knife slot, with a chamber for sarin gas canisters?

Funny.

Killer app? P0rn of course!!!!! Playboy, Penthouse, and Hustler subscriptions added to the iTunes store provide a truly interactive experience when combined with multi-touch actions like pinching, twisting, and swiping using 1, 2, 3, or 4 fingers! I just hope the thing is waterproof for easy cleaning. ;)

I'm not sure waterproof is the right term... perhaps "spill resistant" would be more appropriate? :p

God no, it won't be the iPhone GUI. It will be coverflow filled.

I see this system as nearly a full blow OSX with a special multitouch "centric" features.

I mean we kind of have this already. If you had Safari + itunes + some sort of enhanced front row + cover flow + be arm based so it can run all iphone apps ( and more than one at once! that would be funny ) drag and drop and cut and paste... what more do you need?

yes, indepth text input might be awkward... can people type with one hand ( using 4 fingers ) ? Maybe not.

Wireless bluetooth keyboard and sexy stand, or plug in stand like the old patent showed... I think it would be amazing.

I'm hoping for:

Real OSX, arm multicore cpu, 802.11n, 3G+ cell service, mini Displayport, headphones, builtin stereo speakers 1024x 576 screen, 8 hour battery life.

This is a must. I have a feeling that the new Quicktime will have added functionality in such a device as well.

Apple was really counting on HTML5 being adopted by now I think so they wouldn't need to support flash. That and H.264 as official video codec for HTML5 would have sealed the deal.

Seriously...no exaggeration here...out of literally the hundreds of people I know (friends/neighbors/co-workers/family/etc), I know of 1 person that has an iPhone. 1. Out of hundreds. We can sit here all day debating why, but the percentage speaks for itself...after 2.5 full years of being on the market (which is a LONG time in the cell phone world), a small percentage of cell consumers have one. There has been PLENTY of time (2.5 years) for people to dump carriers or let their contracts expire, choose ATT plans, buy different flavor iPhones, buy different generation iPhones, yet here we are with a low adoption rate.

-Eric

Eric, meet facts. Facts, meet Eric.

1. While the iPhone has not been adopted in the business market, it has not been marketed to the business market either. There is no corporate sales force, support, etc.

2. "Low adoption rate?" Compared to what? Swine flu? Apple sold 5 million of the things in the last quarter alone, and is rapidly catching up to RIM's unit volume. The 3GS launch was AT&T's highest single sales day ever.

3. All of this for not just the most expensive cell phone on the market, but one that is 2-3 times its nearest competitor. Competing against Blackberrys that are often free or $50. Analysts estimate that Apple now garners 20% of the entire cell phone industry's profits. On 1% of unit sales.

4. You know more than one person with an iPhone. Seriously, you do.

One screen to rule them all...

Seriously... it'll control an AppleTV/FrontRow remotely functioning as a second monitor with touch controls.

However I think the killer app is a combination of safari and custom AppStore apps. I could definetly see myself using it for 90% of my web browsing which is focused on reading (NYTimes, Yahoo Finance, ARS, and yes even MacRumors).

Now if you don't want people to complain about the cost of something that "just is a touch screen" you make if modular with a clip on keyboard/trackpad.... but that's very un-apple.

Dual touch-screen LCDs in 10" notebook form factor. Held like a book it acts as an e-reader. Held like a notebook it displays a virtual keyboard on the bottom screen.

swivels 180 degrees. turn pages by swiping. itunes store to include magazines, newspapers, and books.

the iDont care

This is going to be something REALLY useless,....I can feel it in my bones......like a projector, or something to bleed the money directly from your a$$hole without bothering you on your daily "floating on easy street" routine of being a pompous iD!ck and an opinionated Jerk at the same time. "look at me and this new toy I have ......aren't I cool? Look at this really irritating thing it does.....
Bla bla bla

A killer feature would be a free cellular wireless connectivity. This is why the Kindle is a success. eBook devices are not new, but the Kindle offers people to easily purchase books virtually anywhere. Free might be a stretch, but without at least a 3G connectivity in the tablet (preferably LTE), it would be crippled.

Dude, someone already came out with that. It's called the Microsoft Surface.

Arn,

how about putting the real big story on the front page instead of burring it with this conjecture thread?

Apple rejects Google Voice App. This is a big story, even touching the main stream news and it's left in the iphone blog department in favor of this speculation thread that is not even based on any new rumors?

Something down right illegal is happening with Apple and the Apple Store in terms of anti-competitive behavior and you can't blame it all on AT&T since after all the Apple store is bigger than just the iPhone, it services the iPod Touch (no AT&T connection there) and will likely also be available for the Tablet discussed in this thread. Apple is literally controlling the market place and even die hard mac fanatics should be realizing the danger of this. Can you image a world with the Microsoft Store and Microsoft could just outright deny any program that did something a Microsoft program did?!!

complete BS

Could it out-computer a computer (or at least a netbook)?

It won't be just a 'tablet', or a big iPod Touch. A bigger iPod Touch in itself is not enough, that by itself doesn't add anything you can't already do on an iPod Touch or iPhone. It will basically be a computer that runs on the Touch OS.

The only reason iPhone uses Cocoa Touch is the normal cocoa controls would have been too small and fiddly. 10" device doesn't have that problem every thing will be just the right size depending on screen res. It will be Full Snow Leopard on the device might need to be snow leopard specific builds so they are complied to the LLVM but full OS and that may take out a few well known apps, but it'll be full OS no the less.

Can you image a world with the Microsoft Store and Microsoft could just outright deny any program that did something a Microsoft program did?!!

Microsoft did try something like this and got sued by the Justice Department for anti-trust and misuse of their far greater than 50% monopoly on desktop computers. Apple owns nowhere near 50% of either the desktop or phone market, so they can completely legally use tactics that would still be illegal for Microsoft in the desktop market.

Wait till half the cell phones sold are Apple's, and then your complaint will be more justified.

but IANAL.

Can you image a world with the Microsoft Store and Microsoft could just outright deny any program that did something a Microsoft program did?!!

Of course I can imagine a world like that. Because we live in it.

Ever wonder why there isn't a single truly viable Microsoft Office competitor? Seriously, 20 years and no one can mount a serious challenge?

Remember how, not too long ago, you'd try to visit websites and they'd give you a message that said something like "Internet Explorer for Windows is required to view this site?" I do.

Microsoft has been strong arming the market for years.

Do I want to see Apple go down that road? No way. But at least I'm glad that it's not Microsoft this time.

if apple is making a Tablet it should look like this. . .

+ it isnt going to run the iPhone OS. and its NOT going to have a new OS. it will be running snow leopard.
I truly hope that will not be the case. Have you ever used one of those Windows XP tablets? When an operating system has been designed around mouse and keyboard use paradigm, it would be silly to assume it would be slick or fun to use with a touch screen. An Apple tablet with vanilla Snow Leopard would suck just as bad Windows XP tablets have since 2001!

This thing will more than likely reshape the way we think of media delivery. From music to books to magazines.
Everything seems to be culminating toward an imminent ground breaking device, empowered by Snow Leopard, sporting more sophisticated multi-touch capabilities, augmented reality applications, QuickTime X HD 1080p rendering and functionality, speech recognition, interaction, and dictation - evolving into that genuine "Central Hub for Media" which has been so optimistically anticipated. Subscription 3g/4g service ought to be an option, but not mandatory, as Wi-Fi has become so readily accessible. While potential iChat/Skype capabilities will likely pose a mild threat to wireless carriers, it would seem likely that it would feature a built-in HD front-facing camera, or quite hopefully, an advanced iteration of pixel photo recognition. Exciting times!

the commercial:

*tablet on the the screen and a hand goes up to it*

"less truly is more"

*hand starts writing on the screen without a stylus but hand is still in position it would be with a pen in hand*

"the all new macbook touch, stylus not included"
