are people really wanting a tablet?
With the right capabilities and the right price, hell yeah, I want one.

I'm a digital artist. I definitely want a stylus (as an option is fine by me) for precision drawing. With that, a tablet could replace my Cintiq. I'd spend $800 on that, no problem. I spent $1000 on my Cintiq!

Or maybe that won't happen (the Cintiq's sensitivity is awfully good), but it'd still be great to take a tablet on the road and doodle with it in Photoshop (or some light equivalent) or Illustrator (or some light equivalent).

Pencils and sharpeners and brush pens and paper in addition to my laptop and not having a scanner, plus an iPod, plus… yadda yadda yadda… All that adds up to a whole lot of **** in my bag that one, really well-done tablet PC could replace — not completely, but for when I actually leave my house.

The interactive booklet certainly would not be the selling point for me, especially not at a price tag of $799. Now.... If it was subsidized through a carrier and had mobile 4G, I might pick one up at a $199 price point, however, it would need to run standard OS X applications and be capable of taking handwritten and typed notes. This is the big seller for me... I have always been better at typing than writing, but have always stuck with a pen and paper because of the inability to quickly incorporate diagrams, tables, drawings, etc. with a computer.

That's my .02

What you are asking for is not a tablet from apple then... take a look at the crunchpad...

Lets have a stab at this.

It will have a dock, which will have the USB's & Ethernet ports for when you want to use it at a desk

Possible solar panel built into the back to help battery life outdoors?

will expand multi touch way beyond the iPhone & current macbooks abilities?

Will be snapier in Safari!(ignore this)

will use a cut down version of leopard

will have 3/4G capabilities.

thats all for now

Everyone (true "personal" computer"), niche markets, books (education), medical, game

I see this as a big success.

This will truly be a "personal" computer, and everyone will want one. With app store programs for essentially everyone, this will be a bigger hit than the iPhone/iPod! Guaranteed! Apple does these things really right.

Medical... huge market for tracking medical documents for doctors, hospitals, and medical professionals.

Business/consultants/sales - imagine how much easier to share than opening up a PC. Show presentations, diagrams or videos on how products work, and share business information.

Niche markets - consider with the app store every niche market can have its own custom app.

eBOOKS!!! This is the obvious instant success... align with publishers and education books, align with magazines and newspapers... Apple is pro at this!

Gaming... consider this a complete console like in a cockpit for a fighter... with lots of "on screen" controls... really a ton of potential here too. Also, BOARD GAMES. Family board games with automatic tracking of player money (monopoly), points, dice rolling, and etc.

This will be big. Apple has had enough time to think this through!

Magic Forcefield

That holds it up like a clam shell

Magic Keyboard

So you can type on a real keyboard like a clam shell

Wait a minute, just give me a 10" Air

That would be GREAT, as far as it is light and small (the MacBook Air is too heavy and too large for us).

Here is an order of thousands for our University.

if apple is making a Tablet it should look like this. . .

attachment.php

+ it isnt going to run the iPhone OS.
and its NOT going to have a new OS.
it will be running snow leopard.

That would be EVEN GREATER (see my previous post), as far as it is light and small (the MacBook Air is too heavy and too large for us).

Here is an order of thousands for our University.

it will operate as a full size keyboard and track/touch pad for notebooks and desktops etc.

video teleconfrencing and a multimedia applications for streaming content anywhere through a carrier, wifi, or service provider.
something really media oriented i thinkespecially if it has a optional stand

Arguably, the iPhone's killer feature on launch was its excellent mobile web browser. [/url]

No. The iPhone's killer feature was that it made telephoning easy again. Like computers, phone's had become too hard to use. The iPhone changed that. Most people don't really care about the browser.

Easy: A good way to type

The worst thing about tablet pc's are their text input. Hand writing sucks, the on screen keyboards suck. Apple needs to make something that doesnt get in the way and is easy to type with.

I completely agree. Imagine if you could type without having to look at what you are typing...kinda like with a real keyboard. All you have to do is rest your 8 typing fingers anywhere on the tablet and this initiates the keyboard. Start typing as you would on a physical keyboard. The software analyzes where you pressed in relation to the original placement of your typing fingers and uses the predictive text engine to assist with the correct keystroke.

Killer app? P0rn of course!!!!! Playboy, Penthouse, and Hustler subscriptions added to the iTunes store provide a truly interactive experience when combined with multi-touch actions like pinching, twisting, and swiping using 1, 2, 3, or 4 fingers! I just hope the thing is waterproof for easy cleaning. ;)

Well, maybe you've got something there. Apple might stick to more wholesome publications, but I can see them trying to get a piece of Amazon's pie. No pun intended.

I think there might be some kind of iTunes Subscription deal involved included in the price. Think about it, any song -- anytime. That would make a true media tablet.

Now this would be sweet. However, expand the song idea a little further. Think video-on-demand television. Apple may just help everyone realize broadcast television is for live events only.

I hope the tablet ends up being a downsized, multi-touch laptop. Full featured Mac OS with a CDS/DVD drive to load software.

I think it has to be if people are paying a premium for it...or will they? A dumbed down OS better reflect so in the price.

While I'm no expert at all on this, here's what I think WOULD be "Killer Features" for this possible tablet thingy:

> Mobile Television- There was a user who posted about having TV being broadcasted in all digital now. Why would it be so hard for apple to introduce something of their own slingbox? Release this by the side of a new airport/time machine hub that can act as a wireless television broadcaster. Integrate it tightly the Apple TV (AND GIVE IT BLURAY? =D ), so Apple finally has a viable media CENTER, not just application.

As far as the slingbox idea, see comments above about VOD, but...

I can't believe nobody else has mentioned it...Blu-Ray!!! Of course this tablet will come with a Blu-Ray player to compliment it's hi-def display. It only makes sense.

lol @ kickstand comment

Why does it have to have a "killer feature"? The Macbook/Pro, iMac, MacPro have no "killer features"... They are high quality, the laptops are thin, and sleek looking. That's enough to bring in the dough for apple. they dont need to have killer features... the same audiencee will flock to it because it is high quality, thin, and nice looking.

Dude- the killer feature is OSX on a portable device.

I hope uncle Steve did not read your post. And know where you live.

Thanks for this. Saves me having to read 300 odd messages! I've never thought much of tablets and always thought they were pretty useless, but at least that's given me some insight into the purpose of a tablet. Cheers! :D

Might sound simple and stupid but if Apple was to refine that tech that came out awhile ago that projected keyboard onto a desk so you could type without having an actual keyboard would be awesome... It might be good for those of us that like to type notes but have to draw diagrams and things along those lines! (Please no "get an air, it already has a keyboard" comments)

If I remember right that product worked but some times it was hard to use. I know apple could make it a killer feature!

What do you all think?

My Killer Feature - Size

BIG: Big enough to be "bigger" than the ipod, and key thing, to be able to read full-width (1024) sized web pages without mag/shrink.

SMALL: Small enough to go in the back pocket of a pair of bluejeans.

G.

A lot of the wish-list comments in this thread seem to be describing current laptops or the iPhone, apart from the tablet form factor. The ebook aspect is the one obvious killer feature given the success of recent products like the kindle.

I'm excited to see what Apple release as they'll obviously have had to think about how to remove the tablet from being a very niche device and that might well be with some feature no-one has mentioned yet. But at the moment, reading through this thread, a lot of what's been mentioned, I just find myself thinking that a laptop would be a more suitable/flexible device to be using.

I'm clearly just a party-pooper :)

I haven't read through all the comments, so this may have been mentioned already, but I'm quite sure the killer feature of the iPhone and all Apple products for that matter is simplicity and ease of use.

This is what makes Mac OS X so attractive. This is why the iPod is the dominant player in the MP3 market. This is why the 3GS is in short supply.

for it to exist

How about, for there to be a practical reason to own one outside of "It's an Apple tablet". In other words, a reason a tablet would be a better choice than even a MacBook Air to someone besides people in the narrow niches tablets inhabit now (medical/industrial settings).

The functionality of a Kindle, the price of a Kindle but with the extra iPhone / iPod Touch functionality such as music / video / browsing / document reading and editing.

Oh, and at least two 3.5mm headphone sockets for shared video watching on planes, trains, etc

Less than 10 inches.

Those specs would - to me - make it a must have purchase for travellers and commuters.
