The fact that it probably won't have a physical keyboard is great selling point. My children have had a love tearing off keys off my laptops. (Replacing three entire powerbook keyboards could have bought me 4 iphones or maybe 1 tablet). I think young mothers are definitely a good market for a tablet...

that is why i love Macrumors!

You guys are basically a big brain storm group.

If i were ''Steve'' or any other Apple hotshot i would certainly take notice because some of you guys/girls have excellent ideas.

Great thread, please keep it going!

I didn't know there were girls here? Are you sure about that? Where are they?
I thought macrumors was a guy website.

Wacom Cintiq

I could see the Apple targeting Wacom Cintiq users if they add pressure senstivity to an Apple tablet (and well obviously make it bigger) along with multitouch and a stylus.

It would make a great input device along with ebook reader, Internet, music, video, and gaming device. It would make a great universal remote for the house to control all electronic devices as well and light systems, surveillance, sound, air conditioning etc... Beyond the Kindle!

I think Apple will pitch this as a big iPhone rather than a keyboardless Mac; so the 'killer feature' may just be apps/games from the App Store on a bigger screen; and access to your media (especially video) anywhere.

Ultimate media device

This tablet will be ideal for watching movies, and I see apple expanding the app store to include a section dedicated to print media; newspaper subscriptions, comic books subscriptions, magazines and books. Remember that Apple is a consumer based company and not business centered, so any tablet will be aimed at the consumer and not necessarily targeted for productive purposes.

I think the killer feature would be an app store for the tablet mac.

Not sure if you can call that a killer app? Yes a killer feature but definitely not a killer app.

Lets face it, apple's distribution of software to their iPhone devices far exceeded their expectations. Their going to capitalize on this infrastructure they built and as they grow. I don't see why they wouldn't want to expand this support across all their existing products and new ones in the future. Of course their competitors are looking at this model and starting to duplicate it for their products.

As you know software administration using iTunes suck. It's a nightmare. It's a great product for buying software but trying to organize and keep it clean it's impossible. I wish they come out with another software called App Manager or something like that to manage them.

I just don't see how iTunes can manage the software distribution and manageability for the Tablet. Either they add lots of new features into iTunes to manage programs for Tablet or they introduce a new software.

I personally think they should keep iTunes for purchasing of software but should create another software to manage programs that you purchase for iPhones, iPods and the new Mac Tablets. I would like to do some of the following things
1. Backup and Restore (both settings and data)
2. Archive Files
3. Syncing
4. Tethering
5. Organization of the Springboard for both iPhone Springboard and Tablet Springboard
6. Apps that you want hidden versus visible on the Springboard
7. Being able to update apps (downloading updates and installing them)
8. Diagnostic tools

iTunes should no longer backup and restore Apps nor be able to select which App will be loaded on the device. Yank those features for the AppManager. So, all you can do with iTunes with regards to Apps is be able to buy.

Apple should have read the similar thread before the unibody MacBook launch!

How about decent battery life? Something that the iPhone never had?

Two USB ports. 3G, Blu Tooth... Ooops, I almost said Blu Ray! Voice recognition built in! Tethering and mini-display port!

Placing the connectors, so an additional keyboard could be connected, if necessary? Touch screen is fine, but it might not be the best for everybody.

Good screen, Apple shouldn't save money on screens. No super-mega-hypergloss, please. That size will be used outdoors a lot, also in buildings with several fluorescent lighting. We cannot imagine (our vertically-placed monitor-trained intelligence simply cannot process it), how badly a tablet would suffer from reflections. Having said that, a dark budget tent might do the trick.

Flat back, so it wouldn't be awkward to place it anywhere. Having said that, the iPhone and MacBook Air are OK. Any suggestions about that?

No cheap rubber and nasty plastic! Quality, quality, quality, please!

This time, it would be nice NOT to have cracks, overheating, failing screens, constant fans and employees jumping off buildings.

Five and six finger gestures with additional feet-placing operation (I should trademark that!).

A built-in cooker would be nice. Apple has been neglecting the kitchen department, their only product for the kitchen is the white MacBook. And that doesn't even have a tin opener! Disgrace!

A must - the new device should run Windows Vista (only joking). Get an XP!

It will most likely be 10.6 (Snow Leopard)... but running on ARM (32-bit) with the Cocoa Touch iPhone GUI on top, and running some form of App store apps.

God no, it won't be the iPhone GUI. It will be coverflow filled.

The only reason iPhone uses Cocoa Touch is the normal cocoa controls would have been too small and fiddly. 10" device doesn't have that problem every thing will be just the right size depending on screen res. It will be Full Snow Leopard on the device might need to be snow leopard specific builds so they are complied to the LLVM but full OS and that may take out a few well known apps, but it'll be full OS no the less.

I think "both" the Iphone OS desktop and normal desktop is the solution - phone GUI for simple tasks (when it's an entertainment pad), and the desktop underneath when you want to use it as a tablet PC.

ARM would be a fail for the latter - no existing apps will work, it must be x64 for that.

Long reader new poster and so on...

Here are my views that you guys have missed.

This will be a big ipodtouch with the iphone OS. why? Because it is not here for us to work and create with like a laptop. People want something that they can have on and with a single touch use.
If I go on a trip, do I wish to get my laptop up and watch it boot and then log in etc or just pick up my tablet and slide to unlock it and use it rightaway?

And for the stylus pen question, where have you been guys? there are pens for iphone already so now worries about that, just get your tablet and buy a pen and voila!

And for the internet, why would it have a chip for 3g in it when the iphone has tethering? I know it does not work in the US, but in Europe we use tethering and hopefully one day you will be able to use it too.

And all this crap about "I want OSX snow leopard because I need photoshop". Today we have a lot of apps in the appstore, is it so hard to think companies will make you a photoshop like app to use with your stylus pen?

Im pretty sure anything like this will be released anytime soon.

Its completely pointless.

Between a macbook and an iphone, I dont understand when I'd need a 'tablet' thing.

Sure it will look nice, but it isnt needed.

Its like that plate you get at posh restauraunts.... the one thats bigger than a saucer but smaller than a dinner plate......

Pointless

Maybe it could have a third OSX version. Snow Leopard with a new touch based interface... This is where Marble comes into play...
Apps for the Marble interface will be sold through the appstore.

Oh and it really needs an Intel chip. ARM is underpowered. Or, as said before, maybe some new, amazing and inhouse-designed PA Semi chip.

Hopefully not! Did not Apple learn from the PowerPC fiasco?

It's different. PowerPC cpu was made by IBM (Motorola bailed out). IBM made lots of promises and failed to come through. In short IBM makes good server CPU's that are HOT and FAST. But they suck when it comes to making Mobile CPUs.

Just like the switch Apple made to Intel with the Desktops and Notebooks they're going with ARM with their Tablets.

If you look at the power usage between Atom and ARM, ARM blows Atom away.

  • Intel's Mobile Atom can do 0.8 watts at 800MHz
  • ARM A9 chip can do 0.25 watt with multicores at 1GHz.

Maybe in the future P.A semi will deliver same performances or better than ARM.

I really hope it will be a "big iPod/iPhone".
I think that with a 10 inches screen, AppStore apps and iPod/iPhone like built-in software it will sell a lot.

Some AppStore apps would benefit from a large screen and more processing power.
For example, my [app]Italian Video Recipes[/app] would sell a lot more if it could be used on a big screen.

Games with higher graphics resolution on a still "portable" device will also sell a lot.

I don't see a market for a tablet with regular Mac OSX and no software ready to run on since we already have a great 13" notebook.

Palm/Finger Recognition

Five and six finger gestures with additional feet-placing operation (I should trademark that!).

Close but the real "gimmick" is security through palm recognition - place your hand on the touch screen to start. No more passwords! Just use palm and finger to access.

I'd imagine that would make your screen quite dirty...I'd rather just type in my password or use a fingerprint scan.

I'd look for decent battery life, processor speed, what OS it's running, multitouch, and good quality control (no plastic backings...)

few years ago i used an HP tablet at Charlie Palmer's in Las Vegas. it had the entire menu and wine pairing on there. i think the tablet will be more of a business device than a consumer device

Dock your iPhone in the tablet and have use of its 3G network.

I have been saying for a while now, AAPL should make an iPod Touch with a 3G card built in. That way, it then add the A-GPS, and everything else the phone offers, but the phone. T would be happy since they would make more money on a data plan, without voice, text, et cetera; and customers would be happy so they can use their iPod Touches everywhere.

I already own a phone, a BlackBerry Bold. ERven though how cool the iPhone is, I have zero desire to own one. However, that being said, I am willing to pay an extra $10-15 per month say to get some sort of data plan on my iPod Touch so I can use it in the car, or walking in the City, or whatever.

The only way for an Apple Tablet to be killer...

...is for it to revolutionize the idea of a small tablet the way the iPhone has: small form-factor computing with features that, while not necessarily new, cause users to rethink their needs. The only way I see this to be done is by the following:

  • ubiquitous, no-hassle, always-on wireless network connectivity
  • price-point at $499 or less
  • music and application distribution platform
  • wider-format, enhanced gaming experience

Doesn't seem like Apple is equipped for that, now is it? What?!? They are possibly equipped to deliver that? Well then if it's got these features:

  • a multi-touched-based keyboard sized to comfortably accommodate two-handed, QWERTY-style input
  • voice recognition with speech-to-text
  • flawless handwriting recognition
  • color OLED
  • e-book media distribution

Then they will DESTROY kindle, provide a reasonable platform for all sorts of new handheld-kiosk or point-of-sale uses, AND open up legions of folks to the possibility that a tablet computer is all they need.

Mark my words. If the Apple product has only a subset of the second list, then it'll just be a showcase device with no hope of significantly shifting the computing experience. If it has all of those features, or possibly even a superset of these, look out. BTW Apple, I'm available for product development consulting.
