The last new category was HomePod and refurbs were made available 9 months after it launched.

I don't think "Series 0" Watch was ever made available as refurb, nor the original AirPods.
Ah so it’s a bit more “hit or miss” and not a general rule of thumb for Apple.

Apple will use them for replacing devices under warranty/AC

We always forget this part. Not everything goes to the refurb store. I had a defective iPhone 4s and when I brought it to the Apple Store for repairs, they gave me a choice of having my device repaired, which would mean being without a phone for a week or they'd swap it with a refurbished one that got returned.

Fortunately most folks are not so classless as to be buying $3500 electronics with zero intent of keeping them.
Talking about class in the context of consumer goods electronics feels very fedora-y. Personally, I think people using the return window that Apple happily gives them to evaluate whether they like a product is common sense, but maybe that’s just me.

So they are just ignorant enough to spend $4k without knowing if it's even right for them?
To be fair, this is a rather unique product. I mean, how do you know whether something that's never existed and has to be seen to be believed is right for you? Watching someone else use it on YouTube won't tell you. How do you know after a few minutes in a store?

If ever there was a product that needed a "take it home and try it" window, this is it. I think people tend to abuse the return window on other products-- buying 7 of something and returning 6, or whatever-- but this one strikes me as a pretty experiential decision process.

How is that classless?

Interesting choice of words. Seems to me a very capitalist thing to do something that to some might seem in poor taste but is well “within the rules”

Like say, holding billions of dollars in cash overseas to avoid paying taxes….

I would think there would be a lot. It’s a novelty item at a pretty good price point for people to buy them to try out with no intention of keeping them.

Most people don't buy things to just try them out. Most people would just go to the store and try it out.

There is absolutely no substance to this motion that AVP's are being returned in droves.

It is a fact that a lot of people live a very long way away from an Apple Store, and so it's easier to have the device shipped to them rather than drive/fly themselves across the country to try it.

Most people might not buy things just to try, but there are countless examples of people that did just that in these forums alone, and I find it hard to believe that it will be limited to this readership.

Saying all that, the only people that will ever know the total number of sales/returns will be Apple, so there really isn't much point arguing about it, is there?!

No, there isn't. But there's also no point in speculating that there's going to be a ton of returned products based on a few people on Macrumors saying so.

I live near 8 Apple Stores and more near my work.

Still got mine delivered because I didn't want to deal with the mall crowds, get mugged, or have to find parking.

It may be a very long time for these to drop down to around 2k. Scarcity will drive the market.

Everyone knows this. That price though....

You got a source for that?

Nothing official, but are you seriously trying to suggest that most people buy something from the store, with the intent to just try it, and return it? Because Apple's own sales numbers would prove you wrong. People are clearly keeping the things they buy from Apple.

Maybe they will toss them in the landfill where they dumped all those Lisa computers!
