Let's move back onto what will happen when it is out.

I suspect it will be a new 18 month contract. There will be a option "I am a Existing iPhone customer and would like to upgrade to this new handset" and that will enable the new iPhone and you sign up for another 18 months.

Summer 2008/autumn 2008:

-New redesigned iPhone with some interface changes, 3G, 3rd Party apps, MMS, Video Camera (direct upload to YouTube)... 8GB and 16GB Models.
(Would LOVE for it to be unlocked for all carriers, I think we all would. Anyway...)

- Sub-iPhone (iPhone Nano) multitouch, 1.3MP camera, safari, phone, MMS, SMS, 3rd party apps, iPod, BLABLABLAAAAAAA... (with good apps but less than the "iPhone classic"). 4GB model.

Little. It would be a horrible mistake on Apple. Anyone that wanted an iPhone would of bought by now, or planning to buy for the holidays.

Bull ....

Lots of people will be waiting for current contracts to expire.

My contract expires in June and I will be looking then for my next phone, if iPhone 2 is not out, with 3g support I will skip it.

I would shoot myself if the iPhone looked like that.

Financial analysts from both RBS and UBS have predicted a new version of the iPhone to be released in the Spring of 08. And they are saying this by analyzing supply chains, not just hunches.

One thing you can bet. The release of the new phone will quickly follow the announcement of the new phone. Sales of the current version will no doubt plummet once the new version is announced.

Well we have the iPhone. They don't.

USA and EU - 1 / Asia - 0

With the extra functionality in their phones, such as 3G, video calling ( especially in Japan ), payment via cell phone etc etc - I don't think they care too much - an iPhone will be a downgrade.

Apple will not be waiting for anyones ATT contract to expire before they release the next gen iphone. The mobile market moves faster than that..look at other high end/ pda or "flagship" devices. Look at Blackberries, Cingular 8525-8925/ TILT, Nokia N95 all rolled upgraded version of their devices in 1 yr or less.

Without getting into the argument of when iPhone 2 will come out, I'm pretty certain that AT&T contracts will hardly play into it (unless Apple change's course and decides to allow them to be subsidized, which I'm doubting). Apple care more about a continuous stream of iPhones going out the door than people's contract standing, and AT&T only cares that people are under contract, not how long that they are under contract for.

And no, AT&T won't charge a cancellation fee to go from one iPhone to the next. I was an AT&T customer with 9 months to go on my contract when I purchased the iPhone and all that happened was my contract was reset to two years (and they'll still let me upgrade my phone in January too).

I'm also guessing that one won't necessarily swap out SIM cards but will rather just sync with iTunes.

EDIT: Just realized that the OP is from the UK, but I don't think that changes my thoughts too much (noting that I have little knowledge of the pricing plans/contracts in the European market).

I dont think you will ever see a iPhone 2 per say,

I think...

You will see hardware updates just like you see mac hardware updates, but everyone gets the new software updates, as long as your version of the iPhone has the hardware requirements!

I've just binned a 3G phone with video calling. No-one ever video-calls and browsing on 3G sucked up the battery in about an hour from full. All completely pointless.

Depends if video calling is common in your part of the world. In parts of Asia, its more popular.

The 3G + battery life will improve over time.

Did you ever get to use video calling? If so, what was the quality like?

My last two phones were 3G video phones. Video calls sucked. They're not the standard calls but with video that the operators marketed them as. Video calls suffer from slight delays that are noticeable enough to make the call seem disconnected, as if the person you're talking to isn't paying attention or concentrating on the call. Hard to describe really but its no where near as comfortable as a standard audio call. Hell, I wish they could just use all this 3G extra bandwidth for CD quality audio calls. Surely in this day and age, we could have phones that don't have 1980s audio quality for phone calls?!!

If my contract with 3 was up (can't come sooner TBH, bunch of clowns) I'd strongly consider a current iPhone. I'd likely use it as a portable photo gallery, for which I'm currently using up 3GB of my Touch, freeing that up for music.

If there's an iPhone2 by the time the contract's up, all the better :) The desirables for me would be a solid and thin build like the Touch, 16GB+ storage, 3G (drop to EDGE when unavailable), MMS and 3rd party apps. (I know that MMS is about as likely as an FM radio on an iPod or a floppy on an iMac, but hey.) I could live without any of those though.

Apple will have to release a 3G iPhone for the Asian markets, otherwise it will be laughed off. I expect there will be a iPhone 2 in 2008.

That is what was said about selling the iPhone in Europe. "People in Europe won't buy a non 3G phone and laugh it off"....

Well I think that prediction was wrong and the proof is in the sales numbers. The iPhone as is would sell well in Asia. Wait and see!

Yeah buit not for transfering to other phones, only use is for headsets. cannot pair with my mac or other BT phones.

All can be fixed with a software update...so if Apple felt those feature were key to push out an iPhone 2, they could skip that and do a software update.

Apple's waiting on 3G battery life to improve, thats their big want I'd imagine. More flash memory will be there too, but thats do able right now.

Spring 08: Firmware version 2.0, 16GB option
November 08: iPhone2 with 3G, 3 megapixel camera (front camera too) 16GB, 32GB options.

Upgrade will just extend your current iPhone contract to 18 months (UK) again. Flog the old one on ebay.

Wild guesses but one thing's for certain the O2 iPhone tariffs aren't going to change anytime soon. The price will drop though after xmas (£200, proving that the iPhone is subsidised in some way ie. same price as equivalent low spec Touch).

I have a bit of technology ADD and pre-iphone I had been spending about $400 for a new phone every 9 months or so...

There is a market for iPhone2 before the early adopters' contracts are up.

I guess Apple was smart and listened to your advice and didn't put 3G into the current iPhone. ay ay?

I guess this new groundbreaking 3G power saver will be out sometime...maybe magically when iPhone 2 is around. And according to the "people" that say the iPhone 2 will come spring, is about 4 months away.

you guys keep talking about the contract with at&t. If you buy a phone at full price it doesnt matter about the contract. Theres no discount or rebate on the iPhone so Apple can update it whenever they want. I wouldnt be surprised if there was a new iPhone at macworld. Check the buyers guide, it says don't buy, approaching the end of a cycle. Meaning a new one might come out sooner then everyone thinks. I would probably buy one next summer if it came out. (if my wife let me) Every mac freak would probably upgrade too.

9 months? I tend to upgrade every 6 months. Get a phone on minimum tariff, buy it out after 6 months (not too expensive on a £15/mo tariff) and then get a new one. Can't see iphone being any different.. Phones change *fast*.

Lets see how the sales are like in 6 months time. You'll always get the initial pent up demand. The long term sales are more important than the initial few weeks.

apple. won't. release. another. iphone. (that being gen 2). until. 2009.

So your c o m m o n s e n s e tells us that Nokia, LG, Sony will not release any phones until 2009 either..because of contracts, right?

They'll release a new iPhone 12-18 months after the first one was released - that's what common sense would suggest.
