depending on what features over the original it offered.. it would need to be something clearly evident that it's worth the upgrade costs.

Maybe Apple will do trade-ins of the old iPhones and flood their Refurbished section for those who don't want to pay so much for an iPhone 🙂

My $0.02

1. Apple will release a new iPhone before June 2009, the 2-year anniversary of the iPhone. From Apple's perspective, they need to release a new model to be competitive. I'm sure that any iPhone owners will be able to upgrade their iPhone, provided that they extend their 2-year contract with AT&T. Ditto for European iPhone owners.

2. A 2.0 version of the iPhone with more features will need to be submitted for FCC approval. Therefore, it won't be a secret; either Apple will announce it or it will be leaked on MacRumors and similar websites. However, if I understand correctly, Apple could upgrade the memory in the current iPhone without regulatory review. I'm guessing that 16GB model will be released in early 2008, possibly announced at MacWorld in January.

They have already established 16GB of flash storage with the touch, so a 16GB or even 32GB iphone is definitely coming sooner than later. Also, with the talk that Apple will open up the iphone to 3rd party developers next year, I'm guessing that a new iphone will accompany that introduction. Look for announcements at MacWorld.

As I understand it, the Touch has one or two memory "slots". The 8Gb one has one "slot" filled, while the 16Gb has both "slots" filled. Problem is, the iPhone has only one "slot", so it will require higher density memory to bump it up to 16Gb. The higher density memory is coming onto the market, but I don't know if it will be here as low enough price for MacWorld. Of course Apple could into a 16Gb model at a hefty premium... and come September I expect the Touch will double in capacity for no price change (and I expect the "classic" to be taken out an quietly shot as Apple bolts a HD onto the high-end Touch)

The big announcement at Macworld is more likely to be software related. Firmware 2.x, SDK and some high profile 3rd party apps. There's an outside possibility of 16GB in that single memory slot.

Only time will tell.

We have contracts! 2 year contracts!

Think smart. The 2nd gen iPhone will probably come out Summer 2009. Around June. Guess what happens then? The people that bought iPhones early..........their contracts will be up. Perfect timing.

Tell me. Who seriously buys a $500 phone every year. Anyone that wanted or cared about the iPhone bought now. Maybe 3% of people are waiting for the second gen.

Please - I heard such adamant comments up to the day before Apple reduced the price $200 bucks and removed the 4gb version. That was what? 1-2 months after it's release? I'll bet anything there is a 2nd gen in 2008. 3g.

Apple will have to release a 3G iPhone for the Asian markets, otherwise it will be laughed off. I expect there will be a iPhone 2 in 2008.

The states have 2 year iPhone contracts, other countries do not. But we all know that Apple cater for the states primarily ( even if its small as only shipping u.s dictionaries only - i.e., in 10.4 ) :-\.

Maybe apple will work out something for existing iPhone owners.

Maybe only 2% of potential customers in the states are waiting for gen 2.... I suspect its a lot higher in more mature cell phone markets such as Europe.

I agree that Apple will have a new iPhone for the Asian market but I believe it will be a new model (they will continue to sell the existing 2G one but with more memory). The new model will be a larger form factor, be more expensive, and will most likely come out in the second half of next year.
