iPad Pro What will it take for you to upgrade to iPad Pro 2021?

I will be upgrading to go from the 12.9 to the 11 inch pro. hopefully we see bit more ram and obviously faster chip...with having the M1 air I don't have a reason for the 12.9 now to be honest and I want to use my iPad easier on the sofa and as good as the iPad Pro 12.9 is for media it's not as easy to handle for me I would say

Not going to replace my 12.9 first gen until it dies or becomes unusable, its a tank and does everything I ask of it.

Now, that being said I have only one wish for the next one I buy aside from the usual performance upgrades... DON'T BEND/FLEX! I am perfectly willing to add some size if it adds some stability.

My 2017 10.5'' iPad Pro still works really well. There would have to be something really impressive to justify buying a new version.

That's where I'm at right now. I do want a new Pro with cellular. I just want to make sure it's a really significant upgrade also.

Camera completely superfluous for me on a tablet but if they must include one it doesn’t need to be a high spec bulky beast.

Reminds me of the last time I was at Disneyworld.. some putz was holding up their iPad taking pictures, when they dropped it on the cement. Right tool for the right job.

A camera and laser ranger finder for AR purposes, ok.. but I cringe everytime someone sends me a picture from their phone/tablet and expects it to be as good as an DSLR.

It’s going to take a really good deal for me to upgrade, I was perfectly content with my 10.5 Pro minus the slight white spot stating to show, if it wasn’t for the fact that I couldn’t pass up a deal on my current 11” Pro (first gen) I probably would still be using my 10.5 Pro.
I usually keep iPad’s longer than iPhones, but man I love my 11” iPad Pro.

I cannot imagine any reason why I would upgrade my 11in 2018 iPad Pro. It’s great for my uses.
I do wish I had a bigger drive, larger than 64 gb. And lte. It anything I’d buy, a 12.9 2018 iPad Pro.

I don't own an iPad yet (besides from the 2010 1st gen in the closet) but I'd love to get a Pro update with miniLED, MagSafe and new SoC.
For my potential usage a 15" size would be a dream but don't see that happening yet.

I had the 9’7” pro and didn’t plan to upgrade until i broke the screen.
I just bought the 2020 11” Pro (256GB) and love it.

I’m a sucker for new apple products but it would take a lot to get me to consider upgrading. I think the biggest draw would be some incredible leap in battery life. Like 2.5x current... or more plus a brighter screen. Not that either of these are an issue on the 2020 Pro, but to make them “go to 11” would be something to consider!

I’ll likely upgrade just to get the better battery life. A faster processor and maybe more memory would be good as well. I would really like it if they could figure a way to add a little friction to the surface so that using the Pencil would feel more like using a real pencil on real paper. I wish they would put the front facing camera on the right hand side. I always use the iPad in landscape when on FT. It would be better to have the camera centered rather than at the side.

Hardware wise not much. If Apple could add something similar to Dex mode when plugged to a monitor it would it more useful I think for word processing and having a browser open for research or whatever. Multi window would be a nice option and definitely remove any need for a laptop for many I think. Having to switch apps or splitting a screen still seems cumbersome. I think improving iPadOS should be the main focus as well as better external monitor support.

Love my 2018 11” Pro, it’s flexibility and power is hard to match. That said, I’m of the mind to upgrade my primary computing device on 2-3 year cycles, so I could be brought around to a 2021 Pro. I’d bump up to 12.9 this time (new magic keyboard, no new pencil).

What would get me is mostly software based stuff (though knowing Apple they could always dress up the software as only possible on the new, more powerful processors). Improved multitasking with an eye toward true external display support is #1 with a bullet. My job has also swung heavily into video editing and production, so a full featured FCP available on iOS would be a selling feature too (Luma is great but it’s graphic effects are limited, and F Abobe straight to hell).

Ever since the Magic Keyboard, I am totally addicted to the idea of completely modular computing, and that external display support is the final domino to fall.

Have a 2nd gen 12.9 pro. Love it and can’t imagine being without it. It is fantastic in about all areas. its also a 1 tb model. So I would need the following to upgrade:
* more ram
* base model at 256 and lower cost to upgrade
* better display mini-led/oled, the display is great right now
* spatial audio
* more special features, possible faster cpu etc.
* would like a larger size - use my iPad mini for portability stuff

Now that I have the M1, I feel like I am royalty. I still like my iPad Pro 2020 but, it's not my main driver anymore. As such, I don't see spending another $1300 on the next iPad.

I'm on the fence. I usually gift my old iPads to cousins. I have a 2018 12.6 Pro and will probably gift it to my cousin when the new ones come out. I'm hoping for a longer battery life. The bigger, the better for me.

I'm in no hurry but I'll probably buy it.

Like a few others here, I have the 2018 11" iPad Pro (which I purchased less than a year ago at a nice discount after the 2020 model was released). I love it and it's my primary media consumption device. Prior to that, I had a 2017 10.5" iPad Pro (which I used for 3 years, and then gave to my 5yr old daughter who's been using it for all her virtual school needs).

For me, I'm planning to upgrade to the new / rumored 14" MBP M1x/M2 whenever it's released later this year (to replace my 2016 13" MBP, which still runs great). And my 11" iPP is fantastic and less than a year old, so unlikely anything would get me to upgrade to the 2021.

I agree with others that the 2021 iPP is probably mostly for ppl who don't have a 2018 iPP or newer. That being said, Apple absolutely should release it, given the 2020 iPP's A12z being essentially the 2018 chip, it's really a bit long in the tooth now and due for an upgrade (even if it's primarily the internals).

Your reasoning to downgrade to a smaller size makes sense, but I can't envision me downgrading. I've been using the 12.9 iPP since it was first introduced back in 2015, started with cellular... and haven't broke rank yet lol.

Upgraded to the 2nd generation 12.9 iPP on the basis of purely ProMotion hype, but then again... it was a welcome upgrade.. since I had a bump up in storage. But according to the rumors Mini-LED will be in the 5th gen 12.9 iPP... I highly doubt that would sell me on an upgrade. The screen is already pretty good on the iPPs as it is.

But, what would it take me to upgrade my current 3rd generation iPP has more to do with my the design. Because as of now.. it's fast, I don't really take photos with my iPad... therefore camera tech is not really high on my list. And, according to the rumors.. the design won't change. I don't think the design will change for awhile now.. since it's been adopted by the iPhone.

Won't take much. My wife is currently using a 12.9 Pro. I have a 7th gen. She does not like the size and would like smaller. So we have decided to trade my 7th gen in and get her the 11 Pro. I will keep the 12.9 for myself.

Certainly agree with better external monitor screen sizing. My main requirements are:
1.. USB-C 3.1
2.. Allow full backup to external SSD, as I am frequently without internet access
3.. Provide users with ability to clean up temp files
4.. Support my Magic Mouse, which works on my iMac
5.. Cropped photos do not appear correctly on external display. The original image is shown
6.. Let SIRI do many of the things that work on MacOS, including:
Open and close files and Apps
Wake the iPad as well as put it to sleep
Open last file accessed
Provide print capability. If i have a Numbers or other file or document that I can otherwise print, SIRI
should be able to do it. I think SIRI at this point is just window dressing, and needs to be made into
a really useful utility.

Well, according to GSMArena it already has 3.1... we just need Apple to do better with taking advantage of the iPad hardware. We know it’s a capable machine, but it’s somewhat held back by the limitation of iPadOS. For which, I think... by separating itself from iOS... it’s going to open it up more. And I think most of your gripes comes from iPadOS and not of the hardware itself.

I use my Magic Mouse daily, but I’m using the 2nd generation. It works wonderfully with my iPP.

Let SIRI do many of the things that work on MacOS, including:
Open and close files and Apps
Wake the iPad as well as put it to sleep
Open last file accessed
Provide print capability. If i have a Numbers or other file or document that I can otherwise print, SIRI
should be able to do it. I think SIRI at this point is just window dressing, and needs to be made into
a really useful utility

Umm.. I believe Siri can open apps on the iPad, not sure about files. Siri is pretty useful as it is. I think eventually Apple will get to the point where Siri can do more things on the iPad.
