Let's be frank, a broadwell upgrade would only be 5-10% faster anyway. I don't see how it would be a disaster for sales if Intel hasn't released new chips. I would like to think someone buying a $1300 laptop would be a bit more informed when it comes to tech.

Are you sure that people who buy Macbooks are informed? Considering that the majority of retina displays are unevenly tinted and only a tiny portion of consumers is aware of the issue, I tend to disagree with you.

i can see a system working where you buy a macbook pro under government/student discount. you could also puchase apple care for $185 (instead of $350)

this machine would sell the very next year for probably not much less than what you bought it for. you might be eating $360. or $1 a day for a brand new computer

Or maybe they will and then drop the price like they did with the MBA.

They already made this move with the rMBP last year, by dropping the price $100. Then they made it with the MBA, and now they're making it with the iMac. It's their move to make products lower cost before introducing retina models (as they once did with the MBP). However with the rMBP, they likely did it last year because they realized the current rMBP's price is a bit overkill, and likely the cost to manufactur the retina display has gone down a little.

what do you do with your old MacBooks exactly?

Probably sells it, like most people who get new leased cars every year, or other annual products.

Yep. For the past 4 years I have owned 4 different macbooks because every year I've just been reselling the previous model and taking a $100 hit. That's been getting a bit cumbersome though so the next laptop I buy I will keep for 4 years this time.
