I need this computer (see sig) to last me at least 4 years. So G7's might be out then, who knows. I dropped a lot of cash into it, a lot of cash I won't have till I get a job after college. Well, all I can say is portable because portablity makes it worthwhile.

Best desktop ever: The beige G3. The rev. B iMacs come in a close second, but they had no floppy drive at a time when floppies were still useful. The SE/30 was awesome for its time (It should have been named SEx like any other '030 box of its day). Worst desktop ever? Definitely the original LCII. On paper, it was better than the LC. In practice, it was worse.

Best laptop ever: PowerBook 520/540. Awesome price/performance ratio, and they practically never broke. The snow iBooks come in close except that people with logic board problems have a LOT of logic board problems. Worst laptop? The PB 5300 (screen bezel issues) and 1400 (horrible price/performance).

280c!! Yowza, now THAT is a long product work life.

My next Mac will be a PowerBook. G4 or G5, doesn't matter to me, but it will be a year or so until that happens anyway. My little iBook will hold me until then. :)

Gus

I've got one more year of High School, so I'm looking to buy a new desktop around this time next year. I've got $1500 in the bank right now, but I'm still saving.

If I had to choose right *now* I'd go for an educational discounted 1.6Ghz with 512MB RAM, 160GB HDD, Combo drive, and the Radeon 9600, all for the tune of around $1800.

I've got a 21" CRT on my desk, so I don't really need a new monitor.

Ok I have a Blueberry iMac DV 400 and an iBook 600 combo. The iMac is getting long in the tooth, but I am planning on running it another 6 mos. I will keep the iBook and replace the iMac with an eMac. I see that I am the only one on the boards that is planning on buying an eMac, but I just don't have the money for a G5, monitor and all that other stuff. I need to keep my purchase under $1,000 and I already have a nice iBook that is 2 years newer then my desktop. My question is will I notice a substantial performance improvement from the iMac to a new 1Ghz eMac? Or is the G4 as bad as everyone says. I am a teacher and use things like iPhoto, iMovie, iTunes, Safari, IE, MS Office, etc. It works okay on the iMac but gets bogged down quick. I would like a computer with a monitor for less than a grand that will do these tasks with ease.

I am hoping by winter the eMac will be 1.25Ghz then I will buy one.

I'm sick of buying computers. It's just not as exciting as it used to be. Or maybe the G4 stall and the many iterations of basically the same thing has turned me off.
Oh hell, got my eye on a 17" PB.

Get the latest MacAddict where they compare the iMac with the eMac. It will surprise you.

Hmm... without a doubt... an APPLE G5, I have my eye on one since Apple leaked the news on July... but now i will consider the second generation of the G5... I expect the first generation of G5 will have some small issues that need to be address... G5 at Feb, 2004... hopefully

a new 2GHz G5 ? non-dual?

This is an easy question to answer...

the next Mac I buy will be a 17" PowerBook G5...

I cancelled my order for a 17" (which was announced the month after getting my mitt's on my SuperDrive'd TiBook) because I saw little point in going to another machine which isn't anymore powerful than the one I've got.

A tower would be cool, but I find my PowerBook to be 1000x more productive than any desktop ever could be. That said, when I finally sort out and buy my own apartment I'll likely get a G5 for rendering purposes only (you can't beat wi-fi in the home)!! heh-heh!!

i will replace my dual g4 450mhz with either a dual g5 2ghz panther in late autumn03 or rev.b dual g5 >2ghz in feb04.
that's 6 months from now ...
i hope panther is speeding up my dual 450 a little bit (with 1.75gb ram it hopefully okay) ... otherwise i will get my new g5 in a few weeks ...
i can't stay the "speed" of jaguar on my machine anymore

Hmmm. The way things are looking...not for a very long time. Probably be a G8 out before I HAVE to get another one.

Hmmmmmm - G8 eh? That will make you wait, oh lets see:
1997 - G3
2003 - G5:
six years for two generations - you will be waiting nine years: enjoy.

my next purchase will be whenever a nice IBM Thinkpad 240x shows up on German eBay... I need a small PC to run some FS-apps.

I'm also looking for a cheapo G4 tower to use as a server... I will buy one when university starts again in october.

I really want a powerbook 2400 but I wouldn't really have a use for it.

I'm buying a 12" PowerBook as soon as I've saved enough (hopefully the new ones will be out by then, but if not I'll just buy the current-- it just isn't worth waiting for an announcement when there is no idea when it will come).

Then I'm going to start saving for a rev. B G5 desktop.

Just anxious to finally replace my ancient Pentium 200 MHz which has served faithfully for six years (as a Linux machine for 3 of them, sorta gave it a second life).

my wife got to see the 17 inch imac, the 12 and 17 inch powerbook, and the superdrive emac for the first time the other day, and of all of them she liked the cheapest mac, the emac and the most expensive powerbook

Next Mac

Will probably be a Cube for a desktop, since I don't game much, but I'm tired of lugging my iBook 16VRAM to and from work.

Of course, I'll upgrade my cube...just need to buy one first.

Unless Apple has plans for a 30th Anniversary G5 Cube. (see pic on
SpyMac. Not real, but hey, I can dream!)

Well, I plan on getting a 20in cinema display for my 17in powerbook, and then later on i think i may sell my powerbook to get a G5.

What ever the top of the line PowerMac is in February. I hope the monitor will be updated by then and will have Apple wireless mouse and keyboard.

(I'm not holding off the purchase for the peripherals, but rather that is when I want to replace my four year old Dell at home...)
