What would you do with $1,000,000?

Who would want to live in that polluted, overpriced, city anyways? :p Give me a 3 story ranch out in the middle of nowhere, with a nice cellar, a dozen or so paintbrush horses, and a cow or two. :)

$1m = €680k.

A three bedroom two bathroom apartment with a sea view, communal pool and parking space up the hill in Sitges. Then I'd leave London for good :)

On 1 million?

Good luck!

You could live off the interest from $1m no trouble. Invest it at an average of 8-10% a year, taking a salary of 6% ($60,000) a year, rolling the rest into your principal to either make up for short years/months or giving yourself cost of living raises.

$60,000 isn't high living, but you could afford to live middle class in the midwest no trouble. Rent a nice townhouse <$1000/month, utilities, communication, etc $1000/month, leaves you with another $2000 per month for food, entertainment, travel; AFTER TAXES (20% capital gains). Sure, not lap of luxury but not in the poor house.

Take a part time job doing something you enjoy if you want a few extra bucks.

...buy a nice house in nebraska (probably 100,000). then give myself 50,000 a year to live on for the next two decades. probably couldn't live off the interest on 900,000.

Depends on how you want to live :) It's easy to find savings accounts that pay you 4% interest, and $900,000 in the bank would be $36,000 per year.

Put that in something more aggressive like mutual funds and you could easily get 7-12%, though of course this is much more long-term and varies with the markets and economy. I wouldn't want to live on those expectations, either. Would be a great retirement stash though.

Good to see other people are doing the math, and realizing that you can move somewhere cheap to live if you don't have to worry about getting a job.
:)

$999 995 - 'Red 21' at the roulette table of my local casino.

$5 - Bottle of Beer.

I think if you put $1m on a table a casino you can get a free beer or two.

Personally, I'd probably sell my house and rent a nice townhouse or condo (less maintenance to worry about when I travel) and buy a used, but nice, RV and maybe a sailboat (or better yet, buy into a sailing clubt hat lets me use the boats at various ports), and travel around country. And home school my kid(s) on the road. I'd develop open source web applications, and maybe try to make a few bucks on donations and selling services to businesses using those applications. It'd be my Mac and iPod upgrade money. :p

Oh, or I'd take half of it over to my friend Samir who works in securities, and invest the other half in Norris mutual funds...

That first :)

Then the other 803,925 on a house that is big enough for most of my family, and a lot of space for my friends to stay whenever they wanted.

So, you randomly find a check for $1,000,000 in your name. You discover it's legit so you cash it in. What do you do with it?

My list:
- 24" iMac
- 17" MacBook Pro
- MacBook Air
- 2 8GB iPhones (one for me, one for my girlfriend)
- 160GB iPod Classic
- iPod Nano in all colors
- iPod Shuffle in all colors
- :apple:TV
- Widecreen HD TV
- The Complete Star Trek DVD Collection (TV shows and movies)
- A Beautiful Necklace For My Girlfriend
- Treat my girlfriend to a dinner at a nice restaurant
- Pay for College
- Donate the rest to charity (if there's any left :p)

i have small house so 15" inch lcd tv is just fine with just 800+ sq. ft.

i have college degrees

necklaces don't do a thing for me or wife

and i like my last generation 2005 G4 mini mac and it's a huge leap up from a 2000 era power mac or 1999 era ibook which i used before

restaurant dinners are nice, but only sometimes

iPod is cool but i haven't given CD collection a fair listening yet

...so i would pay off lingering medical bills, plus all credit card charges not related to medical stuff that is remaining, and give to charities

i am not very young so i don't have the energy or interest in doing something super grandiose and long-term, and may need a couple of hundred grand to build up clothing/skate/surf business, but nothing more, really

i like having very little clutter around my spaces and as far as investments, in this day and age, especially in the last 8 or so years, cash in bank or CDs are safer, unfortunately, than securities or real estate or dot.coms, over here in the good ole' USA

I suppose I would do the following:
• Set aside $200,000 for my education.
• Invest $350,000.
• Give $200,000 to my parents.
• Divide $50,000 among my closest family and friends.

That leaves $200,000. I'd buy the following:
• 2005 Chrysler 300C; used to save a few bucks ($25,000).
• A slightly used Land Rover Range Rover ($50,000).
• 2008 Volvo C30 for my girlfriend ($30,000).
• Mac Pro fully loaded + 30" screen ($6,000).
• MacBook Air - ($2,000).
• A few iPods ($1,000).
• A nice piece of modern art ($10,000).
• Get myself started with a pro photography setup ($20,000).
• Art supplies ($10,000).
• Random tech stuff...Food. Gas... With the rest. Maybe invest in some courses and get some licenses (pilots, gun, etc...).

Awesome thread!

  • Computer wise, a MacBook Air (with 64 GB SSD) and 24 inch iMac would be nice (approx $6000)
  • At least $10 000 to each of my bothers ($20 000)
  • Money for Grad School tuition ... preferably in a different province ($50,000)
  • Then I would probably invest the rest and donate a portion of the returns to charity, using the rest to live on as I finish school and travel so that I would only need to work when I want (should be able to get at least $40 000/yr in interest)

I would probably do something like that too. With the other $200,000, Computer-wise I would buy a fully loaded mac pro, macbook pro, macbook air, and an alienware something-or-other for gaming, a 3g iphone and a 1st gen iphone just to hold me over ;), an ipod classic and ipod touch. Carwise, I would buy an aston martin dbx and a jetta 1.8t (to upgrade, of course :D). Then the rest I would leave for insurance, gas, bills, and the like. A man can dream, can't he?

I'll let you know, I've just won $14,000,000 (£7,000,000) on the UK lottery

OK not really, but $1,000,000 is only just over £500,000 so I'd do the following

1. Pay the mortgage and loans off - £160,000
2. Nice car. £40,000
3. £300,000 in a high interest savings account.

Boring I know but not that much money in all fairness. Now if I had won the UK lottery, totally different story, it would be spend spend spend.

I'd take 700,000, go to an investor, and invest(I also have a family member who knows what he is doing with $$, so I'd talk to him)

100,000, change it into gold and put it in a bank.

Give 100K to my parents

I'd give 50k to my brothers

And with 50K, I'd buy a
MacBook Air Maxed out
160GB iPod classic
16GB iPod touch
Palm Centro(when it comes to AT&T)
New AppleKeyboard and Mighty Mouse
LCD Sony Bravia TV
PS3
Some video games.

If their is any left from that 50K, I'd buy some stuff for friends.

a llama, or an emu...
a green dress, but not a real green dress, that's cruel...
Was that the first reference in this thread? I'm surprised it took that long. ;)

Personally, I'd pay off my bills, review my health and wellness, invest a little money, and then... set about the long arduous task to becoming the greatest superhero that ever lived! :: queue dramatic music, building to a crescendo :::

P.S. It would probably also take sometime to locate and retain a law firm capable of dispensing authoritative advice on the various municipal misdemeanors surrounding vigilante justice... but, that's neither here nor there.

150 inch HDTV
A big house to fit my TV in
A PlayStation 3 to plug into the TV
A Farrari or Bentley Continental GT
Very high spec Mac Pro
MacBook Air
My own island
A plane to get to and from the island
Some fancy jewlery for my girlfriend
iPhone

Put the rest in a high intrest bank account! :D
