The people who buy non-Pro don't even know what refresh rate is, nor care. But it's totally fair to say that after existing for so long already, and for $800+, they should have gotten ProMotion by now.

If people who buy the non-Pro don't know or care what refresh rate is, and I definitely agree with you, then it's really smart that Apple chooses to focus on bringing other more meaningful things from the iPhone Pro phones down to iPhone 16.

This article states:
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max - 2868x1220 resolution at 460 ppi
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max - 2796x1290 resolution at 460 ppi
The 16PM display is taller but narrower. Watching a movie in landscape orientation on my 15PM already has bars on either side. Watching the same movie on the 16PM would make the image a bit smaller, and the side bars bigger. Same with looking at a standard size photo.
The article is incorrect (16+ hours after being published and it's still not corrected). The 16 Pro Max resolution is actually 2868x1320, not 1220. So it's both wider and taller.

It's more like, they get away with it. They can get away with having 60Hz on an $800 phone because the buyers don't care. You might say, if they don't care then it doesn't need to be there, but the truth is the only reason that it is not there is because there are not enough features to create the artificial segmentation needed to price a Pro phone.

These phones are becoming tablets. I simply don't get why people chose to carry huge bricks with them. The largest reasonable size for a phone is that of the iPhone 13 mini, which is what I will stick to while possible. If Apple does not make a new iPhone of that size by the time I need to change that phone, then buy buy Apple ecosystem.

Apple updated the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max with larger displays this year, increasing the size. The iPhone 16 Pro has a 6.3-inch display, up from 6.1 inches, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch display, up from 6.7 inches.

According to Apple, the iPhone 16 Pro models now have the thinnest borders on any Apple product, thanks to a reduction in bezels. Some of the increase in display size comes from the bezels, but the iPhone 16 Pro models are a little taller and a tiny bit wider than their predecessors.
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max - 6.42 inches tall, 3.06 inches wide, 8.25mm thick, 227 grams.
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max - 6.29 inches tall, 3.02 inches wide, 8.25mm thick, 221 grams.
  • iPhone 16 Pro - 5.89 inches tall, 2.81 inches wide, 8.5mm thick, 199 grams.
  • iPhone 16 Pro - 5.77 inches tall, 2.78 inches wide, 8.5mm thick, 187 grams.
Though the size has increased, there are actually few other changes to the display technology. Apple is still using its Super Retina XDR Display with ProMotion for the Pro models, and the brightness and peak brightness haven't changed. All models have 1000 nits max brightness, 1600 nits peak HDR brightness, and 2000 nits peak outdoor brightness.
  • iPhone 16 Pro - 2622x1206 resolution at 460 ppi
  • iPhone 15 Pro - 2556x1179 resolution at 460 ppi
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max - 2868x1220 resolution at 460 ppi
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max - 2796x1290 resolution at 460 ppi
What is new is a 1 nit minimum brightness. Apple added this to the Apple Watch too, and said on that device that it would allow for a more frequently updated always-on display with a second hand. Some of that same benefit may be available on the iPhone, and it may be one of the reasons why Apple was able to increase battery life.

While the iPhone 16 display also supports 1 nit minimum brightness, it does not have an always-on display or support for ProMotion.

Both models also have a new second-generation Ceramic Shield coating that Apple says is 50% tougher than the prior-generation Ceramic Shield coating used in the iPhone 15 models.

This years upgrade is decent, but nothing special, until all the camera's are 48mp, I'm keeping the 15 Pro, however unlike last year the 16 Pro seems to be the compelling choice this year

It's really simple: different people have different preferences. I've been enjoying my Pro Max for years. It works great for me. Doesn't feel like a brick at all.

I do wish they'd keep a mini around for those who prefer it. It was a killer product. But the regular-size iPhone is not that big. You'd probably get used to it quickly.

I think this rather hilarious and people argue every single year about specifications when majority of consumers either don't know about these differences or nor care. I can tell you that about only 1% or less know about the refresh rate and never had I had a conversation about this with my friends.

And Apple knows this. Changing to 120hz for non-pro Iphone does not move their revenue because if it did, they would do it. It's just business. Samsung and other companies are trying to differentiate their product by providing features at lower prices because every android phone has reached some standard level. Apple's data probably shows that people who are leaving iOS for Android is not related to refresh rates because if it did, you would see a more consorted effort from apple to add this as standard.

Majority of consumers care about two things: Camera and battery.
And possibly the ecosystem?

Yup, complete lack of competition in the US market made Apple to stop any innovation and interestingly Samsung as well. Apple is now only the 5th largest phone manufacturer in China and will probably fall even further.
Lack of investment in I&D and/or too much marketing strategy being thrown in the mix has impacted other markets as well. Siri was supposed to work across the world, but here in Portugal I need to speak Spanish since there’s no Portuguese available for HomePod; not even Portuguese from Brazil. Why Spanish and not English you ask? Because Siri doesn’t comprehend a single address, name or command that requires the understanding of the Portuguese language. As everyone else, I’m paying for the brand’s supposed excellency, however it’s falling short of my expectations year after year. Guess when it started…

Huawei has a huge ecosystem that includes all kinds of devices and even cars. You know the thing Apple failed to build while Huawei, Xiaomi, etc did.
I was talking about working one not some makeshift bs based around what they have seen elsewhere. Everytime I see someone trying to mimic Apple they fall short on actual day to day delivery. There is always some issues you found on daily basis.

So screen size is more important than ecosystem? Seems a bit backwards. I want a strong eco system that works well together with good hardware to match, I would certainly not leave if I thought a phone was too big.

I just compared a 6.9” tempered screen protector with my existing one that I removed. Looks around 3-4mm bigger than the 6.7” one. I guess the difference is taken up with the smaller borders. I hope so anyways . Never know with these first gen screen protectors what you get.

No efforts to improve the bad flickering indeed. My LCD iPhone 11 is getting too old and slow, I have ordered the new Bigme Hibreak e-ink phone, a bit raw but certainly usable with no eye-strain, I'll report in a dedicated thread when fully tested.
In response to my own suggestion, the Bigme e-ink phone is quite disappointing, mainly due to its grainy screen, which is far from the smoothness of something like the Kindle Paperwhite. The design is unattractive, and it runs an outdated operating system, Android 11. The speakers are also poor. While it functions, it feels like a significant step backward compared to the iPhone 11, so I'll stick with the iPhone for another year or more. Maybe someday a company like Remarkable will produce a decent e-ink phone, even if it comes at a high price.

Android phones totally kill iPhones - one can get a decent PWM free phone with 120 Hz display and rapid charging (10 to 100% in 20 min) for 1/3 of price of a comparable iPhone (size wise), why even bother with Apple phones?
I tried 16 plus recently - it strains eyes just to look at it because of PWM flicker, and it's painful to eyes to scroll content in a browser, ouch! I do like solid metal feel of it, but for the money it should be at least 120 Hz and flicker free.

A phone is way more than its screen, but if it flickers for you (remember it doesn't for the vast majority of people) then its not for you. There are many other important point when it comes to a phone. Battery life, eSIM support, water resistance, operating system, battery life, cameras. And last but not least to me, ongoing updates and support.

That's the reason I moved away from Xiaomi in 2019 after 3 devices from the brand. But alas most website I visit from my trusted SE Mk3 are impossible to navigate on that sub 5" screen. So forced to have a bigger device at the end.
