With the Mac Studio and Mac Studio Display a iMac Pro doesn't make much sense anymore. The base of both together cost less than what the iMac Pro went for. What is needed is an "inexpensive" 27" (or larger) iMac. The 27" iMac used to start at $1799 and could routinely be had for less. The Studio display by itself is $1599. Some people don't need all the power, just want a larger than 24" iMac. Especially those upgrading from older base 27" iMacs.

A base Mac mini BYODKM is a fine option for folks who want a larger display than the new iMac.

Why is the 24” going to keep the M1 for over 2.5 years? They could easily put the M2
In it now, then M3 in another 1-1.5 years

Even prior to the Apple Silicon transition, the iMac was a product that only saw updates once every two years. There was no 2016 or 2018 model of iMacs. Even 2014 just had an education-only 21.5" iMac model and the first retina 5K 27" iMacs, but otherwise no update to the rest of the iMac line. Mac minis are even less often. So, it wouldn't surprise me whatsoever if we only saw iMac, Mac mini, and Mac Studio models with odd numbered M-series SoCs while we're seeing both even and odd in Mac laptop models and iPad Pros. All that to say that I'm pretty sure the non-Pro/Max/Ultra/Extreme/whatever M2 SoC is probably just going to be limited to the MacBook Air, the 13-inch MacBook Pro, the iPad Pro, and likely next year, the iPad Air.

I strongly disagree. Maybe if the Studio display was less as once you have a 5K 27" display you don't want to go back to anything less (smaller or less resolution). So you are looking at $1599 for the Studio Display plus $699 for the base Mac mini so $2298 to start. That is $999 more than the base 24" iMac. Again the 27" iMac base used to start at $1799.

iMac is less relevant than ever in the current time when people want more flexible solution.

Maybe don't interpolate from yourself onto others. I don't want more flexible solutions. So do many. The 24" iMac is very liked. Some people however want a bigger screen without the exponentially bigger price tag and specs of a mac studio (because, believe it or not, they don't need it).

Think i paid around $2000 for the late2012 iMac, looking back at all the money wasted on hardware, this is the best $2k I ever spent by far. 10 years later it’s still chugging along without any issues or performance problems while remain silent. Only things I did was upgrading the memory myself to 24gb for $150 extra when I got it in 2012 since it’s much cheaper vs Apple memory. And more recently switch it over to use an external Samsung ssd via usb for more space, with added benefit of gave a huge boost to performance, like a new mac. If Apple doesn’t artificially block new macos upgrade I can probably use it for another 10 years. As it is now I am ready to drop 5k for the next 27 iMac, because I know I will use it for 10+ years compared to the average pc life of 3-4 years before it becomes crap. There something elegant of having a single wire with just a monitor on your desk and that’s it.

Very likely: a 24" iMac with the M2 Pro SoC in addition to the M2 SoC. The cooling system of the current iMac case appears to be able to support the M2 Pro SoC fairly easily.

As a 2015 iMac 27" 5K owner, I am not satisfied with the Apple Studio as a potential replacement. However, my iMac has began having hard drive issues. Interesting timing on this article. Tracking shows that the drive replacement kit should arrive today, so hopefully I can keep the 2015 model running for awhile longer in hopes that Apple will introduce a larger screen Apple silicon AIO model. Currently undecided on Plan B.

If you want 5K, pay for it. Or stop complaining and buy a 4K monitor to go with your Mac mini like most people do and can’t tell the difference. Apple is a couture brand now unless you buy their “SE” products. And As of right now they do not have a “SE” Macintosh line.

I wonder if this is being conflated with the Studio Display Pro rumors from Ross Young. Both seem to offer 27-inch displays with ProMotion, Mini-LED, and black bezels. Here's hoping both rumors are true!

What I want is an iMac that can also double as a display. I have a MacBook Pro for work, but I have to buy a separate display because you can't hook it up to an iMac without jumping through some hoops.

Buy a monitor and hook a Mac mini and your MacBook to it. You’ll never know the difference.

the same big unchanged CHIN , that is "What's Next for the iMac", pro or non pro , old and new, it seems the chin will be there forever :) + $500 for the stand to support the chin...
PS: how about a 32" iMac, no chin ? come Apple , be nice
In my opinion a 32” iMac would be unstable physically. Remember, the computer guts have to be inside too and the weight, again in my opinion, would make it unstable and tend to topple over. Or it would have to have a giant footprint stand.

I guess you forget that Target Display mode was abandoned in 2014.

There won't be another iMac. They have already shown the future
1. consumer = Mac Mini + Studio display
2. pro = Mac Studio + Studio display
