What's Rumored for iOS 19

iOS 19 is rumored to be getting a major design update with visuals inspired by visionOS. It could have a floating, glossy look with a focus on transparency, along with simplified navigation and a reimagining of icons, buttons, and menu bars.

More Apple Intelligence features are in the works, including the updates to Siri that we were supposed to get in iOS 18. We have a list of all the iOS 19 rumors so far in our iOS 19 roundup.

Honestly, I don't think they really need to add a whole lot of features at all. I'd rather see them tighten up things under the hood and make apps faster and snappier. I think they should also move the Photos app back to what it was before.

Getting Apple Intelligence and Siri to work is what they should spend all their time focused on. The current state of these two features is a complete embarrassment for a $3 trillion company.

I have a few wishes

Column layout in Apple CarPlay. My Volvo’s huge screen looks ridiculous with 4x2 apps per page… on a 12” portrait screen

Warnings after setting an alarm when silent mode is set. I need to wake up.

Automatic buttons on the iPhone screen when my HomePod alarm rings. Don’t make me Hey Siri, when it’s clear what I want.

Local language street names in Apple Maps. English language is ridiculous in other countries for street names, and gets them always wrong. Also bring back the option to change the GUI language. Mine is set to German having played with the option before Apple removed it. English is my mother tongue.

Auto Apple TV remote when Apple TV is turned on on the same network. It’s clearly me, don’t make it hard to open the screen remote.

Profile saved settings, such as volume, on Apple TV and Apple CarPlay. My girlfriend has different tastes. Also the app layout on CarPlay could be much more user friendly to change, depending on who is driving

See through messaging for WhatsApp and messages, use the rear camera to let me see my way when I’m walking and typing

iPhone music app in carplay

All jokes about bugs aside, here are some things I’d like, big and small, that would be nice to have after the bugs are fixed:
  • Use HOV lanes in Maps
  • Undo and redo buttons on keyboard
  • Option to activate Siri (by saying “Hey Siri” or just “Siri”) through Bluetooth only
  • Option to always show scroll bars
  • Dark mode based on ambient light
  • Landscape mode for home screen, all built-in apps, Lock Screen, and Today View
  • Option to manually download and update firmware for AirPods and MagSafe charger
  • HDR10+ support
  • Junk mail included in total unread count for notification badge
  • Option to show media player and notifications at top of Lock Screen instead of bottom
  • Option to keep always-on screen active even when it’s been on for “a while”
  • Option to stop automatic logging of headphone audio levels
  • Option to disable press and hold on Lock Screen to change wallpaper, etc.

I'm looking forward to seeing what food logging capabilities they roll-out. I built my own nutrition tracking app on top of OpenAI's APIs and can't wait to integrate it into Apple's approach right after WWDC during the beta testing period.

As a user, I'm most looking forward to a focus on basic polish and bugs. Twitter has been filled by countless examples of bugs on iOS 18 - the regression in dynamic island animations between iOS 17 --> 18, the broken settings search, the dialogs when disabling personal hotspot, etc. I'd love to have iOS return to its roots as a polished product.

  • Like
Reactions: flybass
  • Larger dock with magnification, autohide, and the ability to put on any side of the screen (on iOS, not just iPadOS)
  • Smaller icons with a tighter layout on the Home Screen (more rows, more columns)
  • An actual icon picker and icon packs in the App Store
  • Toggle for App Library to be the alpha sort by default instead of an additional gesture (and make the alpha sort look like watchOS list view)
  • Ability to rename/remove app category names in App Library, move apps between categories, and manual sort and alphabetical sort options for categories
  • Ability to rename (nickname) apps
  • Split-screen apps
  • Get rid of the jelly wiggle when editing the home screen
  • Get rid of Today View screen
  • Toggle to turn off or speed up FaceID animations
  • Turn off the annoying waveform animation in dynamic island
  • Dynamic island press action defaulted to the long-press action like it always should have been
  • Bring back Dark Sky UI for Weather

Every year my number one will always be Smart Folders on Apple Photos. With the pixelmator acquisition maybe we will get closer to that.

CarPlay Dashboard desperately needs to be able to do more without having to leave the screen constantly such as when choosing a favorite, or acknowledging or reporting a road incident.
