While I can appreciate pigeons could be annoying, you should be nice to them. The way things are going, when things get really bad, we'll be needing pigeons to take care of our message delivery needs!

A question about UK windows: do they have screens to keep insects, birds, etc out?

I wonder, because I remember reading a mystery novel that takes place in England, which made a point of it apparently being standard NOT having window screens. That book was old, and I wonder what it's like now.

Not often. The handles facing inwards make it difficult.

Here the oppressive heat is on my mind. Fans aren’t really cutting hit. Today was another record for May. Around 35 degrees.

It's 95 where I'm from. But the worst part is it's not a "dry heat" either. It's suffocating out there and I think my AC is working overtime!

No AC here. It’s not very common in the UK. Going to have to be soon though with the increased temperatures.
Yes, sadly. I do hope it's not freezer level temps as I experienced on my last trip through the US in 2023 where the AC on the plane (United) and the airport and shops was glacial. It wasn't so bad in Canada during that trip.

In the US they keep the temperature unnaturally cool. But we all know why!

Yes, I know that it is unusually (and unnaturally) warm for this time of year, and, yes, I deplore the reasons why this is so, but, I must admit that I love and thrill to, the heat, the warmth, the lengthening days, the long evenings, the glorious quality of light of spring and summer.

Especially after the tedium, darkness and dreariness of a long - and seemingly endless - winter.

Yes, I know that it is unseasonal, unprecedented, unusual, but I do love balmy evenings in the long summer evenings of northern Europe.
Not a fan tbh. It’s 29 in our lounge right now. And that’s with the blinds and curtains closed most of the day. I just put the recycle bin out, but even at 7:30 PM it’s even more unpleasant out there. No wind.

The happiest I’ve been all day was driving home from the office with the AC on. No AC in the office or home. But with these temperatures, it’s getting harder not to buy a portable AC unit.

I expect they have gone up about 1000% this week.

Right now we have here in Northern Germany 27 degrees Celsius.

Yesterday (here in rural USA) it was in the high 70s F. The fit for the day was capris and a sleeveless top. Today it is cloudy and rainy and my weather app says it FEELS like 38 degrees F. ..Long pants and a sweatshirt. I suffer somewhat from SAD so this up and down weather really affects my mood. Summer is my favorite season (fortunately, we don't suffer with high humidity; it is very dry) so I'm anxious for the days to get warm and stay that way for a couple months before it turns cool again for autumn. Also, I am blessed with AC in my apartment.

Okay, fair enough.

There is a significant difference between "pleasantly balmy" and insufferable and stifling suffocation.
