I can imagine.
Well, yes.

Your misery is several orders of magnitude greater than mine - at least we fought well and defended superbly.
Here I’ve put the bird food away, locked up and made Mrs AFB hot water bottle.
A hot water bottle for Mrs AFB?

Lucky her: These days, the only person who ever thinks to do that for me is Decent Brother whenever I stay with him, bless him.

I'm a Man Utd fan but was routing for Arsenal. I used to have a friend who ran a pub in Highbury Corner many years ago. My sisters partner lives in Finchley and has a season ticket for Arsenal (how much? 😳) and so Arsenal is the team I (kind of) support in London. Well, they won the Premier League, which given the choice you'd of preferred.

So many excellent posts today, this is the right place to hang out I see. Maybe I shoiuld start a new thread but wondering if aynone has a) ever read Dune b) read the Pope's encyclical on AI or c) ever used Substack. Well this probably won't fly here as it is way too political but still.
1): Yes, I have read Dune (and some of the sequels). It is one of the works of SF that I never warmed to, for a variety of reasons. Loathing Paul was only one of them.

2): I have read about the Pope's encyclical on AI (and am delighted to see him addressing such matters), but have yet to read the actual encyclical itself: This is a deficiency I plan to remedy.

3): Never used it, - Substack - but I do subscribe to several accounts - Paul Krugman, Heather Cox Richardson, Margaret Atwood, Robert Reich, Lucian C Truscott IV, among several others - and read them: However, to be frank, I find some of the American ones overwhelming; I hope - and plan - to curtail, curb, reduce - the number of accounts I subscribe to, and the time I spend reading them. Two hours a day reading about what is happening in the US is too much (time, energy, effort...) - and I write as a self-professed politics nerd.

Yes, my friend was very sardonic about the many shortcomings of the honour code, concluding that much though she would love to be able to use it, challenging conditions - not least the development and flagrant abuse of AI - make that quite impossible.
There is a long-standing Honor Code at my institution, and it continues to be upheld. By pledging to the Honor Code on the top of every assignment, you affirm you haven't plagiarized, misinterpreted data, etc. - but this acknowledgement also means that you did not use AI on any part of the assignment. If you use AI, you must include a statement at the bottom of your assignment about which AI tool you used, how you used it, and the extent to which it was useful. Honor codes absolutely still work. Of course I'm not a professor so I don't know that side of it, but from what I can gather, definitely still works.

Saw one of my very best friends this morning/afternoon. We've made it a point to meet every weekend for the past several weeks. Always end up spending probably 3 hours with him, it's a good time. Probably just one more of those, though, as the term is nearly over and then summer vacation.

Summer stone fruits are coming into season, and yesterday's trip to the farmers' market included the purchase of cherries (bliss), peaches and nectarines; olives (with garlic and parsley, green olives stuffed with anchovy, and spicy olives with chilli peppers, lemon, garlic, were also bought), as were herbs (coriander, parsley), several heads of new season's garlic, along with some cherry tomatoes, salad greens, cucumber, and olive oil from Crete.

We need a drooling "smilie."!!! In the meanwhile I'll just use my words to say, mmmmm....delectable! Well, the olives and garlic, actually; peaches and nectarines aren't my favorite fruits. Early summer is definitely the best time for fruits and all sorts of vegetables, though!

From yesterday

I was in my house, when I heard the noise. Given that it occurred somewhere in/near the cape cod bay, it must have been really loud for the folks on the south shore.
I read about it. Weird to think a slightly bigger one wiped out the dinosaurs! We could just all have had a really crappy weekend!

Sounds like a typical weekend to me. Well apart from the oil change. No need for that with two EV’s in the house.
I'd rather change oil once every few months than have an EV.

So far I excavated a massive boulder that was in the yard. It took me around an hour to get it out of the ground, it must have weighed 300-400lbs. I just moved it with a handcart into a more suitable location.

Each to their own. But I’m never going back to petrol after 5 years. EV’s are not the future. They are the present.

You are free to believe that if that suits your situation. Maybe in another decade I may agree with you, but I would rather let that technology get truly tested by time until I consider one.

Well the way petrol prices have been pushed up these last few months, that time might come sooner than you think!
I am not saying you are wrong. There is a good chance you may be entirely right about what you say, however my issue with EV's is the tendency for them to have all these screens and fancy technology, rather than the them being electric in it of themselves. There are more points of failure that you cannot self diagnose yourself, if you have an electronic issue, you generally may not have the skills to repair that yourself - while with a gas powered car, you can, and I've done it several times over the years.

Give me something for basic A to B Transportation that I may use occasionally, no bells, no whistles, I don't care how it looks. Only that it gets me there safely.

Well yes that is true. But modern petrol cars are just the same these days. But with less moving parts there are less points of failure.
No exhaust, clutch or gearbox to replace. Brakes rarely need replacing as you hardly use them.

My BMW only needs servicing every two years. That saves a few £££.

To each their own of course, but realize EVs are much simpler than ICE vehicles (gadgetry aside, which seem to be in all car types now). They tend to have 50% fewer parts on average. ICE cars use controlled explosions that require a myriad of systems to manage it. EVs are simpler, more direct -- fewer and easier repairs over the long-run.

ICE vehicles have a lot of maturity so they may seem more familiar, but they need a lot more bells and whistles just to function than EVs.

Electric is much better in my experience for things such as power tools (Chainsaws, Weed Trimmers, push mowers), that I am in full agreement on. Electric Riding mowers? No way, they cost as much as a full on car (then again due to the price increases, Gas Mowers are approaching similar prices, but as of now I prefer Gas Mowers).

In an ideal world, we'd have safer and cleaner public transportation. Trains, busses connecting cities rather than individual cars. I actually dislike cars in general due to the cost, maintenance, etc that goes in with them. Prices are getting so high with just about everything, so good luck getting anything brand new unless you can afford it.

I’ve never bought a brand new car. I never will. Buying a couple of years old and keeping for 5+ years seems to be the sweet spot for me. Always paid cash as well, but that’s just me.

That is one thing we are agreed on. I don't know who actually has the money to go to a dealership and buy brand new cars with the insane price gouging and interest rates going on these days.
