Who, Sheeran? I don't listen to his music but I've followed his career. He hasn't let fame get to him and he certainly doesn't give a toss about how much money he has. Tries to be a big kid despite being an adult. Easy going and mellow.

Meanwhile you look at others in his field and you pity them.

Is there gonna be an iTunes 13 for Windows?
Yes, in several years. iTunes for both Apple and Window will still be 12.x for some time to come.

iTunes in the next MacOS (Catalina) is _going_away_. At least the concept of iTunes as a single app, it's being replaced by an Apple Music app, Apple TV (with obvious media types for each), a separate Store app, and all device management/backup/sync is being integrated directly into the Finder :)

Right, so that an interesting consideration - where does that leave Windows? Here's where I'd agree with the quote above, and that's Windows will probably just fumble along on the current 12.x versions for some time. At this point, there's been no chatter about Apple splitting out separate apps for Winders™ and I can't imagine a major revision (i.e., iTunes 13).

I don't think Apple is all that concerned about providing another music setup for Windows, especially as it would indeed involve splitting out separate apps and all that, which really is a bit beyond their scope when it comes to another operating system. The Windows folks will just have to find some other solution -- perhaps the web-based Apple Music that Apple has been developing. ??

He does come across differently from a lot of musicians. I feel like he comes across a lot more genuine than some.

Yes, "genuine" and "authentic" seem to be perfect words to describe him! An enormously talented and creative young man who also happens to be just darned nice and real, too! He hasn't let things go to his head or gotten into the bad scene that so many musicians seem to have done, which has often ruined careers and lives.

My computer argh! is at an end. I am staying with Apple: ordered a custom 21.5" iMac and -WTH- Powder Blue Beats Studio headphones (they were free with my EDU discount). IDK why I went with Powder Blue Beats* No, I promise this won't become a Is Powder Blue too gender specific post...:p (If I ever get to that point, please take me out back and put me out of my misery).

*I've generally gone with Black and Space Gray.

I suppose I'll eat my words with iPad and iPhone upgrades too.

As much as Apple bugs me on so many levels, the thought of borking yet another PC, and paying just as much for a system I clearly have no clue about is truly not worth it.

---

Also on my mind, the online creative writing screenplay course I signed up for at UCLA's continuing education school. I am looking forward to this. Sounds like the professor is into working on screenwriting from a creative writing angle. It'll be a nice diversion from being caretaker (which I do not mind) and worker drone.

Good for you on the computer purchase. Friendly advice: Based on your recent computer "problems", go with the flow if problems arise, resolve them. Don't put the iMac up for sale and storm off down the nearest pc vendor and order the latest flashy laptop ;)

Best of luck with the computer, with life and with your course and your caring responsibilities.

By using the word "gorgeous" I wasn't referring to his looks, although I do love that red hair -- I meant his personality and overall approach to life.

I'll stick with my death metal silver foxes. :p:):p

Thanks. I am an old pro at dealing with Mac issues, and just accepted I am not a PC or laptop person.

@Scepticalscribe Thank you as always. :)

Ordinarily, I'd imagine that computer "issues" wouldn't bother you too much, but I suspect that given the amount of stress (your heath, your caring responsibilities, and now, a new - and challenging if rewarding - course), this was probably a sort of stress that you could well have done without.

Anyway, I know that it is not easy, but stay strong, stay sane (if possible) and do remember to be kind to yourself; everything else will find its own level.

Very astute as always. Right on point. Plus, I have enough grief with Windows at both jobs.

My problem is I have a very hard time compromising when the company behind the products I use gets as greedy and penny pinching focused as Apple did (does). This whole struggle was very much my not wanting any more change in my life when everything has been nothing but change (and lots of stress) these past three years.

Another reason why I am sticking with Apple: I finally executed a successful Terminal command* (Apparently, I DID create a bootable Sierra drive with the installer. Woot!)

*My inner death metalhead approves this phrase. :D

So, yes, you can all tell me "I told you so!":p

Staying sane is critical and that's another reason why I just went with what I knew, this attempt to appease my moral self nearly drove me off the rails. So I am slowly trying to get my diet in gear (not this weekend), and figured I should treat myself to another writing class especially since my own attempts at getting back to writing have been shaky.

Thank you...:) and everyone here. Means a lot to me.

Did you get AC? I'd toss that on the machine, then you know for 3 years you're covered without having to worry about any out of pocket expenses. I hate surprise expenses :)

I think you're right on with Apple service via the web for PC users, it makes them super portable, easier to maintain, etc.

re: Sheeran

He has an appearance on Game of Thrones, apparently he was such a fan, he said he'd take any role, even nameless rabble :D He got a nice little speaking role, during a lighter moment on the show.

That should have read "course" not "cause", but my points stand.

I remember that sort of thing when caring for - and responsible for - my mother; because the everyday responsibilities (and in your case, you are dealing with your own health issues, and not simply shouldering the enormous - rewarding yet massively challenging - responsibility of caring for your mother) are so relentless and endless and - yes, exhausting at times, because there is no "off" switch when this is your life, the small things that can go wrong (such as computers committing suicide) can cause an inordinate amount of stress and strain.

It is difficult to explain to someone who is not going through it.

Anyway, be kind to yourself, and treat yourself at times - to stuff such as computers; it is too easy at such times to get into the habit of denying yourself everything. Just as small stressors can be soul-destroying in such circumstances, small treats (and kindnesses) can transform a day, or week, or month.

Re Apple, agree re greed.

Enjoy your new iMac. I just sold my 2012 21” as I’m not using it since I got my Mac Mini last year.

Office politics sometimes is frustrating. I think that it was my avatar that said that in some settings people behave in the most awful of ways precisely because the stakes are low. Can't say he's wrong...

No, I believe that it was the US academic, Wallace S Sayre, (initially I had thought it was David Lodge, but a quick check revealed that it wasn't) who quipped that "academic politics is the most vicious and bitter form of politics because the stakes are so low."

The first time I came across that quote I roared with laughter because it was so barbed, and so (alas) true.

But, agreed, office politics can be immensely frustrating, (and time consuming and downright nasty, at times).

Ah thanks for the historical correction!
It's honestly an amazing quote, even if applied to some contexts outside of the academic world.
What perplexes me is why some people waste so much time and effort just to hinder someone else, without any actual reason to do so, and without any true, tangible gain.

Of course it applies to settings outside of the academic world; it is brilliant (and memorable) because it expresses a timeless truth in such contexts.

But, yes, I agree with you re how toxic office politics can become, and the atmosphere in an office makes such a difference to the tone of the place and how pleasant (or not) one's professional environment is.

Office politics sometimes is frustrating.

Fortunately, I've never had to deal with this, very early in my professional life, I engineered things to prevent this.

Probably the closest I came was shortly after the acquisition of my #2 company, they merged us with an existing group, and more or less wanted us to "duke it out" to sort out positions, etc. After about 30 days, I went up to the CEO's office, read him the riot act - I remember he didn't say anything for the 10 minutes I was in full rage mode :D - over the next two weeks people were "repositioned in the organization", some just disappeared, everything worked out to my group's benefit ;)

Thanks. I really did love the Mac Mini and almost went with one, but seeing those issues out of the gate I just couldn't commit. If Apple ever fixes those WiFi & Bluetooth issues, I would be excited to try one. Glad it's working out for you.

And I am glad there is a Mac that is suitable for me right now, also glad that I am going back to a 21.5". The 27" are great, but right now I do not have a need for the bigger screen, especially with the higher resolution.

A Mac for everyone. I liked my iMac but the glossy screen kind of bugged me. A nightmare to keep clean. My matte BenQ screens are much easier. And they match which keeps Mrs AFB happy. My iMac never did. (I always go duel screens)

Another vote for Apple Care;; I always get it and have found that it gives you peace of mind for three years.
