Ha, I have a funny (or maybe not) hot Halloween story.

My Dad who was super handy, build me this robot costume, it was amazing, but he used Armaflex for a good portion of it, which is a thick rubber-ish insulating material. So I'm sitting in this costume, which is put together on my like Iron Man, on a 85-90 degree day, outside at a this big costume contest at the local mall.

I won first place, but almost died ... totally worth a $2 trophy and a $5 gift certificate to Chick-fil-a :D

Yes, I'd be in the "far further" area of the US :D

I'd rather eat my own ear wax ...

:D

There's a special inquisition for people like you 👹

😛

Hahaha, I'm not even sure I remember what it was exactly, just like a swag bag of "mall stuff", I do remember something from Orange Julius (remember those?)

No, but I came to the US in 2003 so it probably predates me being here.

How come?
Oh that's right, yeah, they were sort of a staple in mall food courts back when. The namesake beverage was an orange + cream type thing, like a creamsicle.

That was my nickname for the orange nonce for the first year. I remember those really well. God, I loved those things so much. I think there's a few places here that still make them but you really need to drive out to get to them.

I've found blending Humboldt Creamery vanilla ice cream (Or Kirkland which white labels it) with fresh squeezed orange juice gets it close to what I remember albeit not as sickly sweet. I remember this one place in the 1980s I'd go with some buddies and they made these massive and delicious churros. It had to be owned by a family or something like that because it all but disappeared when I went to revisit it years later. Much like the mighty donut, a good churro is hard to find. Really simple recipe, but oh so easy to **** up.

There's a lot of small places here that have been around for a half century that'll die out once their long time customers pass on. It sucks because a lot of them still do everything right but it's hard to choose them all the time when so many nice places pop up offering even better food.

Thinking about mom (Hope we get a date for this second hip surgery soon). I am home with her today.

Just asked my job about approving a work computer at home to cover at least one job when I have to call in.

I work two sites most days and whenever I call in, I have to make up the time at both. It’s brutal, but I can do it.

Good luck with both getting a date for your mother's second hip surgery operation/procedure, and with persuading your employer that you don't necessarily need to be visibly chained to a desk in order to get the required work done on time to the standard required.

No word yet on both counts. I do not want to replace working on site, I just want the option to make up some of the time the day I take off, if I have to help mom.

The jobs are okay in that they are flexible with my hours (since no raises / bonuses yet), but I want them to know I am willing to do this if needbe.

That strikes me as an excellent arrangement, if they can be persuaded to agree to it.

The very best of luck with it.

A lot of places these days support and even encourage teleworking -- depending upon the particular type of job and responsibilities, of course. A friend works from home one day a week on a regular basis and often another day or two in situations where there is bad weather (especially in wintertime) or if she is feeling unwell when she first gets up and then later feels that she's ready to put in some hours of work anyway, which saves on using her sick leave time. It's a win-win situation for her and the employer, as she still gets the work done, most of which indeed can be done with a computer, and she doesn't have to commute one day a week, which saves on gas and on wear-and-tear on the car.

So far, probably no remote work for me as they have a dedicated team that works from home. Plus there are additional logistics and cost involved. I mentioned I am fine working on site, just feel bad that I have had to call in a lot. I've made up all the time (save for a few hours), but still.

Mom needs another test or two before this second surgery. Her inflammation was elevated. So we're arranging the tests.

Anyway, thanks for input and well wishes.

I’ll almost certainly be doing the same when I move. At the moment I’m a bit closer to the office, but still work from home occasionally. Personally I prefer working in the office. I get more done. But sometimes for specific projects it can be good to isolate oneself.

Mind you I tend to do that sort of work on an evening or weekend anyway!

Hope she’s not waiting long.

Best of luck with her further tests, and hope the second surgery can be scheduled soon.

Joining in with the others to wish you and your mother the best as she goes through the additional testing and then the surgery itself! Will she be in a rehab facility for a while following the surgery?
Let me add my wishes as well, hip surgery is common but still a major thing.

Most likely, she'll be in rehab, yes.

Older sister has no idea the first surgery was botched and insists that mom not get this one. We told sis that the first surgery was done wrong, but sis is not listening to us. Mom says "it's my choice, I want this second surgery."

I think this sis is terrified by her own impending major back surgery and fears she'll have to "take care" of mom again (Her biggest fear is having to take care of us forever. While she had to help here last year, we're fine now). So sis is being somewhat  so we're trying to ignore that noise.

Thank you, I am confident this second surgery will go smoothly and heal much faster.

Other than this, all is good.

I hope everyone here is fine.

Hope all are well in California. Had no idea about the wildfires until yesterday.
