Nah, I was never a fan of the name Adolf.

No, it doesn't quite roll off the tongue, does it?

It sort of fell out of fashion midway through the last century. Not sure why....?

Indeed. Fashion is so fickle, is it not?

Some tosser who failed as an artist I think.

The writer Günter Grass once observed that the world could have been saved a lot of trouble if the Vienna Academy of Art had accepted a particular application submitted in the early years of the twentieth century.

I think he wrote a crap book as well.

Yes, that was a grim read, agreed.

Spent a good chunk of yesterday reading about french drains and the like as we have to potentially install one in the property we are looking to buy.
Funny the things you have to become an expert on when it affects you.

Absolutely; and it is amazing how quickly you can become knowledgeable and indeed - something of an expert - in such areas when it affects you.

Trying to wrap my mind around what took place in Jamestown, Virginia, in the winter of 1609-10, called “The Starving Time.” In particular, the state of that community when things progressed to the practice referred to as “survivor cannibalism.”

My SO and I are visiting here for a couple of days. It amazes me what archeologists have been able to figure out about this remarkable site during the last 20 years or so. The written records of Captain John Smith have turned out to be remarkably accurate.

I can’t help but think that things would have gone differently had Smith not been recalled to England at what turned out to be a critical juncture.

Pleasantly mild afternoon, blue sky after a slate grey week. Not looking forward to the clock change this weekend.

LOL we get one more week to not look forward to that... so of course I'm reading up on related tips and other helpful folklore... starting to be happy that most of my stuff will "auto-correct" on the dreaded day of falling back to Eastern Standard Time.

Chateau moi, the clocks went back this morning rather than last night.

Wine and time don't do all that well together, not when one may influence how you adjust the other.

Anyway, this morning, in full sunlight, I needed to consult the internet (as I couldn't lay hands on the instruction manual) in order to find out how to adjust the clock on my stunning Ringmaster cooker; two other clocks weren't showing the correct time as they have developed battery problems. Will address both time deficiency and battery problems this coming week.

Now, dinner (a spicy Portuguese fish stew, with sautéed andouille sausages, dissolved anchovies, monkfish, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, garlic - a full minced head of garlic - smoked Spanish paprika - pimentón, saffron, and stock) beckons.

I'm shopping around for a new "utility" wool cardigan (for winter in the year after this one), having tired of patching the worn spots on the current one, just to get me through this winter's early morning coffee-making rounds in a chilly kitchen. Enough is enough. Next year the current utility sweater becomes base material for some felted wool crafts projects.

I'm rather disappointed that so many wool cardigans now have zip fronts rather than buttons. I suppose it's down to being so much more costly to do the buttonholes and buttons than run a zipper onto the thing. Anyway I like to see what's on offer in the early season now, and then try to buy one later in the dead of winter on clearance... as it's just meant to be utility wear, I don't much mind about the color or pattern. But it must be wool, there's nothing else like it.

It’s a chilly day, not quite cold enough to be considered cold.

Coquito. (Puerto Rican eggnog with rum 😋. Although I picked it up from Costa Rica.)

Yes, it’s in a scotch glass. 😔

Thank you. It is delicious but heavy. It’s a nice drink on cold evenings. Typically served cold, but I like it room temperature or even warm.

Yes, I can well believe that it would taste better at room temperature, (or warm), rather than cold. Actually, I'd imagine that it would be brilliant on a cold evening, and a lovely way of taming (and taking) rum.

Clocks went back last night (well, in this house, they actually went back this morning as wine and time don't really mix well), and found myself thinking of Mother quite a bit today, especially this morning.

Current line of thinking seems to point towards mental illness or impaired judgement due to the injury he received during the first world war. Internal trauma, to my knowledge, wasn't as well understood then and it is very likely there was something wrong with his brain apart from his feelings. Apart from that, few recorded material suggests he was like has in his youth. A bit strange some of the world's most evil people in the 20th century just happened to live close together for a brief time in history.

However, it could also be argued due to the "laws of the universe" which are more old wives tales and not concrete science, that had the three or four evils been snuffed out by a mugging which ended up in them getting knifed in the guts, other evil would come to a world stage.

Even right now, and I'm not using the orange nonce as an example, the normal citizenry of any country has people who would easily accelerate such internal evils.

The thing is most people even absolute angels will have had a racist line of thinking at one point or another. I don't want to get political out of PRSI, so I'll make this very vague. There is a gentleman living in North America with a very European sounding surname. As a child he lived on an island west of mainland Europe, not to be confused with the land that holds Wales, England and Scotland. This person makes some racy comments on race and minorities. I find it funny if not sad. Funny because clearly this person is highly unaware of the hatred and racism for his people from the large island next to his homeland's, especially in the 1980s when being on the streets of the latter's major city known globally would have gotten you mugged or severely beat up. Even today, people of the latter island don't consider people of the aforementioned island to be human, if not criminals and animals who were only made who they are today due to them being conquered and treated like garbage for nearly a thousand years in history and still today.

I admire how you've shaped your nugget of nutmeg into almost a jewel shape. Nutmeg is probably the one spice that never really finishes since you don't need a lot and not a lot of recipes call for it.

We did some "dry runs" on a few things, hahaha, I'm still not sure how some of this is going to work in terms of mounting, handing, running power. We had a ton of visqueen (semi-clear, thick plastic) left over from hurricane duty, going to sort of toss that over garage stuff, but crumple it up so it looks like web-ish, light it underneath with some colored lights, add some spiders ... would like to use my last motor to make a big spider move around, we'll see :D

I'm quite partial to the "quarter zip" style you see in some pullovers, but for cardigans, yes, agreed, I think buttons are preferable.

Excellent idea to note what you like now, and strike to buy it when on clearance or in a sale later in the season.

My mother had a wonderful rule-of-thumb re clearance or sales purchases: She said to me that if you would not be prepared to purchase the garment (or good) at full price - or, wouldn't have wanted it at full price - assuming funds permitted such a purchase - then, don't touch it in the sales/clearance.

@LizKat If you have a few extra bucks lying around, you might be able to snag this sweater.

Not to my taste (@LizKat did mention buttons, the idea that this could be closed at the front); for that matter, I'm not sure that this garment could even be classed as warm.

For the low, low cost of $137,500 for it, I doubt any buyer would purchase it for the warmth factor. ;)

Actually, I never checked the cost, but - to my mind, when looking at the subject matter of design (and one of the reasons, for example, I was drawn to Apple initially was the company's design sensibility) is that any object (or good, or garment etc) should be able to fuse both form (does it look good? it is aesthetically attractive?) and function (does it do what it is supposed to do - play music, cut and slice food properly and easily, prepare coffee, keep you warm?).

Personally, I dislike that cardigan worn by Kurt Cobain; I don't like the way it is made, - its appearance - and I very much doubt that it is warm. (For me, that - warmth - is an absolute must with pullovers and cardigans).

But, I don't doubt it will find enthusiasts who will want to purchase it.

Man. I suddenly have newfound (if undeserved) respect for some of the junk I have stashed up here that's older by generations than Cobain's sweater --and no way as smelly either. I should move up from yard sales to Sotheby's next year... and quit buying sweaters on clearance! ;)

Anyway I finally saw an Aran button-up cardigan that even has a hood, so I'm aiming for that when the sales come around again.

Now I feel ridiculous for having talked about winter and sweaters: it's in the 60s here today, sunny with a southeast breeze and I was outdoors half the morning attired in shorts and a tee. But... I've been caulking my storm windows!

This weather's not going to last... We've been known to have snow on Halloween.

My poor deluded Mom had all these antiques she thought were worth a fortune, turned out ... not so much (after we had to deal with her estate, went through things with ). It's funny what actually has value (like a rock star's sweater) vs. a bunch of Capodimonte and Dresden "knick knacks".

Good lord, it's supposed to be like mid-80s here for Halloween, I would __love__ to have a cold, even just slightly cool, Halloween one year ...
