Make sure that you use good quality paper, when journaling, or doing any sort of serious writing; it makes a considerable difference to the whole physical experience of writing while putting thoughts on paper, or even sketching or drawing.
One of the things about the advent of tech is that the quality of paper readily available for writing these days (and I use a fountain pen) has declined - deteriorated - considerably; it seems that computers (or printers, to be more precise) are a lot less demanding of quality than are pens.
Thus, for the past six or so years, I have been using extremely good quality paper when taking notes or just simply writing; when writing, I use Leuctturm 1917, which is excellent and which - when buying - I tend to buy several notebooks at a time; pricey, yes, but well worth it, to my mind. They are a pleasure to write on. Meanwhile, the quality of the paper used by Moleskine, which used to be excellent, has really declined.
Some Japanese companies manufacture superb quality paper, and I have also used paper from the US company, Colonel Littleton, (they manufacture leather goods) which I found to be excellent.
