A lot of states do not permit raccoons to be kept as domesticated pets, and put restrictions on breeding them in captivity in order to sell the young as domesticated. Some states have specific regulations, but do allow raccoons to be bred and sold as domesticated pets. Apparently they are quite charming and loads of fun if raised from infancy in a household, with or without other pets.

I daresay most restaurants, even in states which permit domestication of raccoons, would not allow one to accompany its person and sit at the table!

I think that's a lemur?

Which makes it even more illegal I think? I could be wrong.

Oh, I think you're right, Septembersrain! I was looking mainly at the tail, and yeah, I suspect that lemurs are not permitted anywhere as domestic pets. Good grief!

From the website: http:www.exoticanimalsforsale.net/articles/caring-for-lemurs-as-pets.asp

Can I keep a lemur as a pet?
All lemur types are demanding pets that will require large housing and difficult to secure veterinary care, but if they are legal in the area, they can make good pets for select owners. The well-known ring-tailed lemurs are by far the most common species people own in captivity, but the ruffed lemur and brown lemur also have limited availability. Pet lemurs are about the size of a housecat, weighing 4-7 pounds. There are no small species of lemur that people keep in the United States, so all of them will require a walk-in type enclosure for the best results.

Legality
Primates, in general, are illegal in most states. Lemurs are probably legal in more states than certain monkey species as they are often considered to be less ‘aggressive’ or easier primates to handle. Some states, like Ohio, exempt lemurs and smaller primates from exotic pet restrictions. All lemurs in captivity are endangered in the wild and none are allowed to cross state lines. This means you can only buy a lemur if the seller is located in your state, which severely restricts access to them. Texas and Florida appear to be the states that have the most lemur breeders and the animals are legal as pets there (in Florida, you will need to obtain a No-Cost Class 3 Wildlife Permit, which is thankfully easy to do). Lemur owners should anticipate that bans will continue to grow for the future, and sometimes even legally-obtained animals are maliciously not grandfathered in.

Lemurs issue aside ... o_O

Oh, a few things.

I haven't had new iPad hardwire in a while, heck I've been doing incremental updates to support a few clients with just the simulator :p This new 12.9 we just scored is fantastic. It's fast, responsive, the display is spectacular, iPadOS on a larger model is really starting to feel like an OS that can be used as a primary machine (for many of our use cases). Per my previous post, it's for work, fun, reading, design it may wind up as my primary carry machine and/or the wife's primary machine, while still being used for development, fun, etc.

I got a killer deal on a Pencil 2 (Amazon Warehouse deal), and it's pretty fantastic, I had Pixelmator, but the "go to" for illustration appeared to be Procreate, so bought that and it's just incredibly fantastic. Looking forward to seeing that the little G creates. Checked a bunch of stuff out using Hoopla (several comics, Locke and Key!).

For those looking for a minimal case, check out the TineeOwl product, perfect for my needs, combined with a JETech glass screen protector, no touch issues, case allows for Pencil charging:

... eventually I think I'm going to get a Brydge for it, waiting on the release of the new model with the integrated trackpad.

Switch owners: this is a FANTASTIC controller charger we just got, because it uses the OEM dock as the power supply and it's another stand-alone peripheral:

It add almost no additional footprint to the dock, and you can charge 4 controllers, the console + 2 controllers, and it has a USB passthrough - I love really clever designs like this.

MegaCon Orlando just added two new guests ... OMG OMG OMG

Daughter: "Umm, Dad, you seem more excited about this than me ..."

:D

Oh, and I scored two really awesome brews today, I'll post that in the beer thread, but here's a preview:

I borrowed this from my dad today after stopping by to do his taxes for him.

It's a Sony TC-366 reel to reel. Manufactured in 1971, a few years before I was born. Dad has a bunch of tapes he recorded from the 1960s still and he cataloged what he recorded on a manual typewriter and still has the binder with everything in it.

I grabbed a random tape from the closet and snapped a photo of the catalog page he typed for it.

After this post, I'm going to see if it still works and if the tape is any good.

OMG, that's insanely fun. I had an operating Akai for years, I kept it setup just because it looked amazing, the tapes were mostly vinyl transfers, at some point, I sold it for like 10X what I paid for it, I mean, it wasn't much since I only paid like $20 for it at a garage sale :D

Hooked it up to my stereo and put the tape on and it works!

Pretty neat. This is the first time in my life I've ever used a reel to reel.

That, or working inside Cheyenne Mountain in the 1950s and 1960s.

It's funny you said this, firstly, just because I always say, "Closing up the mountain ..." when I close the garage hahaha, :p and I __just__ rewatched Wargames ( I think it was on Hulu). It holds up so well, I mean, you can look at the computer tech and think it seems primitive, but the general process behind the hack (oh, I've got my time in "war-dialing"), the concepts with using "machine learning" to predict outcomes of a war, etc., it's all still very relevant.

Ha! And even though this isn't the same thing, when I wrote that, I had the image of the interior of Crystal Peak from the movie Terminator 3 in my head. Probably because I watched it last weekend.

My dad has a Pioneer reel-to-reel. It's just sitting in the garage. I see similar models go for hundreds on eBay. His collection of tapes is small, but there are a number of classical recordings. I'd like to see if we could get it up and running. I bet it still works. But I think vinyl is enough for me as far as old audio formats go. 😅

The main thing on my mind right now is how painfully close the end of undergrad is for me. June. Seems that not that long ago I had joined MacRumors and was about to finish high school. And so, soon I will have a degree in linguistics and a minor in Latin. But I have a lot to look forward to, including a several-month trip to Europe after graduation, and eventually, grad school, which I intend to start as soon as I can! (My intent is to go into education with the ultimate goal of becoming a professor. I have a few professors who have already promised letters of recommendation).

In other news, I changed my avatar to a photo of me because it's actually a decent photo (I don't photograph well).

So I realize most of us are pretty anonymous, I guess I've shared a little extra personal info with a select few folks. Anyway, it's sometimes odd to think, if I like dropped off the earth, how I'd just be some lingering posts, that maybe someone would occasionally stumble on, etc., without any idea (or probably, any concern) about the state of the original poster.

Anyway, I say this because I've noted an absence of @Scepticalscribe , since she's such a fixture around here, and I thought, you know, if she never posted again, would anyone know what happened?

I mean, hopefully it's not something dire, like lack of connectivity during a trip, a short term medical issue, etc.

It was from a tweet I saw, that used a 🤬 word, so I didn't want to post the actual tweet and get in trouble with the mods. So I just posted the pic, and my own caption.
Update to the actual tweet with the lemur...

Couldn’t agree more. I dropped her a PM but not heard back from her. I do hope she’s okay.
I’ve given Mrs AFB instructions to post in my absence if I go over to the other side.....
