Is Diplomacy a swash-buckling variant of Monopoly?

It's a strategic board game, taking place prior to WWI, the big thing is the game mechanics are very simple, there's no random elements, very little in the way of tactical concern over pieces (they're all the same), pretty much all the strategy is diplomacy between players. You take a turn by talking with other players, secretively when desired, then you jot down your moves and they're all revealed at the same time.

It's about who can convince who, that they will/won't do this/that/the other :D

We used to play quite a bit, had a few players that were so predictable, hahaha, they didn't even factor into the game. We also had some house rules, and a few times made some tournament rules, so you got points based on victory, assistance, etc., that accumulated, so it wasn't just about screwing someone over in one game, it was how that affected 5 games!

Over the weekend I stripped three carbon steel pans then reseasoned them. Tested one last night. 👍

Yeah, big fan of carbon steel, I mean, I love our cast iron, but sometimes want something a little more nimble. We have a couple that were given to us by our friend with a restaurant, they're nice commercial grade (before these I was looking at De Buyer on Amazon).

Not at all. Monopoly is a game of chance, and quite poorly designed for modern standards; it survives only due to its brand and the many themes that spawned through the years. If you try modern games (see Pandemic) you'll end up hating a game of Monopoly. In Diplomacy there is no chance at all. No dice to roll, no cards, nothing. Just a map and a couple of meeples. It' all about talking and convincing other players to do something, all while trying to shield yourself from the occasional backstabbing. Diplomacy is more than 50 years old and is quite unique.

My car is in the shop, for service. Ford ordered me a lift, using the Lyft service, to take me home.
What's on my mind is, how does one choose between Lyft or Uber?

Yea the only true ending of Monopoly is the board upturned in anger.

Businesses most likely have an exclusive contract with one or the other, but personally we never had an issue with either. Lyft was cool in Disney World because they did the Minnie Van.

I’m excited about my first new desktop Mac in about 10 years - a 2020 Mini. Prior to that I’ve always owned iMacs. It’ll take everything a week or so to arrive and be set up.

When people start threads and over the course of a few posts, it becomes incredibly obvious they have a chip on their shoulders heavier than the communal efforts of a tech forum can lift.

Anyway, if anybody needs me, I've graphed the names of everybody in my state who has come out as having COVID and am going to email it to the head of the Parks Department.

Hmm.... trying to figure out if having had it makes one lean, so to speak, one way or another.

Anyway why not mail it to the DNC.

Nice, they're great machines - I am not a fan of AIOs, I like sourcing my own displays. I'm using an '18 Mini for personal, work, running VMs, Docker containers, thing barely breaks a sweat. I found I just don't need a notebook, when I'm traveling, I just need a lightweight communication device, with a few remote management tools, no real dev needs (aka, an iPad). The previous 15" MBP i7/16/512/370X machine is now being used by my lovely wife :)

[borrowed from a recent post of mine]

Right now, I'm running in MacOS: XCode, ST 2, Chrome (~24-25 tabs), Outlook, Postman, Sketch, Messages, a number of misc smaller utilities, and a VM that's running Visual Studio, SQL Server, and IIS (as you may know, some of those have a substantial footprint) :) and I can pretty much open other apps OTF as needed, without any slowdown :)

This machine, mostly running this workspace, stays up 24/7, in fact, my last uptime before a semi-recent shutdown was 75 days ... o_O It's an i7 6-core, 32GB RAM, 512GB storage, a bunch of TBs of spinning discs hanging off a USB hub, but my primary high speed external is a Sabrent Rocket NVMe drive connected via TB3, it flies, almost as fast as the internal storage, that's where I keep most of my personal docs and libraries, so if the machine takes a dump, I don't have to worry about what was on internal storage (and if the external fries, I just buy a new one and re-sync with my cloud backup service).

One thing I will mention: the BT can be a little finicky, my KB is wired (Das 4 Pro), but I used a Magic Mouse and it would get a little stutter now and then, the consensus seems to be interference from USB-A devices connected directly to the Mini, so many folks (myself included), don't use those ports "directly" (for example, my USB-A devices are connected to a hub via a USB-C port).

Enjoy :)

Thanks!

I plan on using cloned backups on external SSDs, one for Time Machine and one for SuperDuper.

Speaking of KBs, since I very much like the full size Apple KB that came with my iMac, I'm getting a full size Magic Keyboard (in Space Grey, of course) for the Mini. And my old Apple mouse died, so I have a Logitech M720 running on RF, but it's supposed to be able to connect via BT with the Mini. It won't do so with the iMac because it's so old (2010).

Hopefully that means no interference issues. We'll see.

And I'm really looking forward to having a 32" 4K monitor. 😀

Wow, so our county is offering to select students, the option of going virtual – not like they’re at home and it’s the local school doing it - it’s a full on a virtual program with full time dedicated teaching staff, and over the past several months (even pre-epidemic), they’ve been retooling it to match the exact material for the students county _and_ school. So we applied, the little G was easily accepted due to her performance during all this.

She wound being placed at the Honors level for all her subjects, it goes standard, advanced, honors - for example, honors math is Algebra I (she's in 7th grade). Some of her electives won't work, like drama (7th grade girl, so there's always drama, hahaha ...), but the virtual school has a ton of additional really cool electives, one they put her in right up front is Programming  Teaching coding, logic, like the real deal, using Python and Swift. I think she might wind in photography too.

Yeah, in fact, for a while I was running my Logitech Anywhere MX, that uses one of the unifying dongles and it worked great, no interference, and Logitech even had tools for MacOS, for things like mapping buttons, etc., but if you do stick with just the stock drivers, this app:

Adds some nice side button mapping for things like "Previous" (that would normally be a side swipe).

An iPod mini and Bluetooth transmitter. 🤔

Heh, yeah. Hmm. Why not just an FM transmitter? I didn't even know there was or could be a mod to a mini that let it use BT.

I like that the 7th gen nano has BT but am annoyed that the 6th doesn't because its built-in clip-on feature would make it perfect for wearing around with Airpods. 7th has the BT but no clip. Thanks Apple! (I think).

I don't really have anything I'd want to transmit FM to, plus it'd be hard to fit all the buttons into the iPod for changing frequency.

Yeah, I found one inconsistently documented Bluetooth mini mod from a decade ago that doesn't even show a picture of the completed device. I'm planning on A) winging it, B) learning how well an extruded aluminum body blocks Bluetooth, and C) failing miserably.

Oh, yeah, a 6th gen with Bluetooth would be a really cool all-in-one device for AirPods. I guess the closest thing would be an older Apple Watch with a clip-on case.

I was always partial to the nanos prior to the 6th gen; the clickwheel was such a cool input method to have on such a tiny device.

I love my little collection of 2nd gen nanos... used FM transmission from one or another of them to the radio in my 2000 car that had no CD player nor aux input, just AM/FM radio and a cassette player. Used to refresh them from custom playlists stashed in my iTunes library once in awhile. Quit updating the lists so their content is static now but still fun to pick one at random and put it into a 30-pin speakerdock in the studio.

The original white shuffle that looked like a USB stick has great sound, I like that too. i had 2 but one seems to have escaped or is hiding somewhere.

Finding DVD or BD copies of Star Wars (episodes IV, V VI) before George Lucas started changing them.

Neat, isn't it? They did that here last Saturday in my area, and flew very close to my house, since there is a large medical complex pretty near where I live, but unfortunately I missed seeing it, although I did hear it. A friend who lives about a mile and a half away saw them flying right over his house and was able to grab a couple of photos. He was more prepared for this event than I was......

Yes, they are great! In all honesty, I wasn't prepared at all. I just saw from my office lots of people running out of the building. At first I thought there was a fire or something... and then I saw (and heard...afterwards) the Blue Angels. I think it's a very nice thing to see.
