I oddly have only had king crab and snow crab. I definitely like scallops, especially in a seafood fettuccine alfredo. My biggest seafood favorite is mussels, boiled in garlic and white wine.
I've never had King Crab - they're those great Alaskan spider crab like sea monsters you see on Deadliest Catch aren't they? Saw a few when looking around Seattle at that great food market they have. Never got round to trying one.

I like most seafood -- my motto is, "if it swims, I eat it!" However, oddly enough there is one thing I don't like, and that is scallops. I'm not sure why, whether it is the texture of them, or the relative blandness of them, or something else, but I definitely always pass on them when offered them or when I see them on a restaurant menu.
Ah, but as mrs Beaton always says "First catch your..." it all can swim quite fast (even scallops believe it or not).

Scallops don't keep or travel well in my book, I never normally bother in a restaurant either. Our Prawns (your small shrimps) are a similar thing - catch a bundle in drop net and cook them quickly not long after catching and they're a different thing to the frozen versions we all tend to eat.

Sorry to hear of all the Crohn's etc. There's too much stress around for everyone at the moment and while it never helps with anything chronic I think it's particularly grim for digestive disorders.

@Clix Pix: Agree with you that steam mussels (with garlic and butter) are delicious.

And, yes, I quite like scallops, too, but there are other fish (many other fish and crustaceans) that I prefer.

@Apple fanboy: I am in complete agreement with @Clix Pix that Mrs AFB should consult somebody medically qualified - someone recommended and that she can trust - and have a physical check up; 44kg is not remotely a healthy weight, even if you could maintain it, while anything less should be a cause for concern.
But as I have said she isn't going to go see a doctor. She eats and her body rejects the food sometimes. I can't make her do anything she won't do (believe me I tried). She doesn't trust doctors and you can hardly blame her given our history.

Meanwhile we have another issue. Either mice or rats in the loft. Guess I just found out what I'm doing on my day off tomorrow!

Had to pick up the calculator and do a quickie to figure out what 44 KG is..... I assume 96.8 pounds? Depending upon one's height and overall body structure, that can be considered a somewhat low weight or it could be regarded as a seriously dangerously low weight. Height, bone structure and weight all need to be considered in an assessment of someone's health. If someone is only five feet tall or under and of already petite build with small bones, that weight wouldn't be considered terribly problematic yet, but if the individual continues to lose weight, it can indeed be something to be worried about, not just because of the weight per se but whatever is causing the weight loss. And, yes, if someone is five feet four or five feet six, that same 96.8 pounds would be seen by medical personnel and even the layman as heading into the dangerously low weight territory even if not there yet..... especially if the individual's bone structure is not small, with thin, light bones, but rather medium or large. Other factors come into play here as well, which I won't get into at this point, but the bottom line is that someone who is losing weight for whatever reason(s) does need to be seen by a physician in order to rule out various causes of this and to receive appropriate treatment.

I guess at this point I also need to add, for those who might not be aware, that I come to any sort of discussion of this sort from the vantage point of someone who has a lengthy history of anorexia nervosa, now in recovery after many years, so my experiences and perspective around the whole weight loss/treatment/weight restoration/etc. scenario are somewhat different than those of many people. [Yes, there is still that tiny voice that suddenly, unbidden, pops up from somewhere deep inside, right now whispering at me about that 96.8 pounds, laughing...... Huh, what, such a big deal about 96.8 pounds??!!! Pffft! Now maybe if you were talking about in the low 70's or even the 80's......] I take a deep breath and remind myself that while I and others I've known, some good friends, have been at far, far lower weights than 96.8 pounds at various heights and general bone structure, that was not healthy. It was NOT healthy. Regardless of the cause of weight loss, it does do sometimes irreparable damage to the body and various organ systems.

Unfortunately, and this is the part that I need to most strongly again remind myself about, some of those others who flirted with low weight, arrived at that territory one way or another, did not survive........

Eh, yes, well, time to move on here.

AFB: Ack, rats or mice in the loft?!!! Didn't you just get through putting in insulation, shelving and all that there? Is the insulation, which probably provides warmth and coziness attracting the rodents? How did they discover it and get in there in the first place? Is there a previously unnoticed hole that has given them their opening? Maybe they had already been living in there and when you did fix up the loft with the new insulation and new shelving you disturbed their original residence? I know that mice and rats do like to live in walls of dwellings, etc. Yes, you definitely need to attend to this issue promptly! You don't want to be sharing your home with either rats or mice.....

Hope it’s not COVID. But I know that’s not Mrs AFB’s issue. Just her faulty body.

Not COVID-19 but definitely food poisoning or a stomach bug. I was so massively dehydrated they put two bags of IV in me plus 3 glasses of water. They gave me Zofran and Fentanyl for pain and nausea.

They've discovered something on the CT that might help explain why I've always been in pain since my hysterectomy though. So that's the silver lining in the hospital visit.

She’s 5’2” and a very slight build so just a low weight. She’s always been around that weight give it take for the 24 years I’ve known her.

There was some evidence there had been rodents in the property when we bought it, but nothing current. They can get in through a variety of places. Small holes the size of a dime. I’ll check everywhere today. We also have electric lines join up to the house. That’s another way they can get in.

Heavy frost this morning.

Hope you can locate the likely source of entry and can close it off as much as possible in order to keep the rodents out..... Probably you should set traps in the loft as well, or some sort of thing that they will eat which will then poison them -- and they'll wander off, hopefully, to die somewhere else.

I have spent the last... <checks notes> 11 hours or so, trying to work out why some hosts aren't getting/responding to gratuitous arp requests (and thus updating their arp cache). Besides knowing that the problem *is* related to arp cache (which I didn't know.. 11 hours ago), I feel like I'm no closer to a solution.

But tomorrow we're taking the boy and his cousin to a local theme park, which has snow (it's mid 30's C most days here), so a little time to not worry about work will be nice.

I was off work today on holiday. Still did about three hours and might do some more later.

Despite the following blast of 2020, I have a lot to be grateful for.

Argh:

Alas, MBA will be on its way back to the orchard HQ tonight (Memory, playback and battery issues)

I borked my old iMac too (Safari refuses to work now and Bluetooth is even worse),:rolleyes::rolleyes: I need a machine fast and am not sure what to do. My computer issues are almost a comedy at this point.

Poor mom got a load of cranky pants here (for which I apologized profusely),

....and University is no longer offering my degree program (so 4.0 GPA and 12 credits toward the degree doesn’t mean squat now). That would have been nice to post somewhere on the uni website.

Add these to job hunt...

Argh off/

Breathe.

Nice thing: there were unrequested free additions to my grocery delivery today: an individual Turkey pot pie and a giant box of frozen fish sticks. Guess that was Amazon’s way of saying Happy Thanksgiving. 🤔🍁🤔

@Apple fanboy hope Mrs AFB is okay and you demoused the homestead. I read Heavy Frost and think of one of my favorite bands (Celtic Frost: 36 years on they are still one of my most beloved strains of noise).

@Septembersrain glad your hospital visit for stomach bug / food poisoning was minor and that they found something on your CT that may reveal why you’re in pain.

I know mom and I are fine considering, and we will be fine... just big frustration here lately. Lots to be grateful for. At least our awesome local Blue Jays visited yesterday and this morning. They are wonderful.

Hope everyone is okay.

A bit of cute on Twitter...

Good luck with the mouse problem, AFB! So the exterminator did put around traps, too? I would've thought he'd have some special magical potion to put around or some other solution!

SS: I used to be rather a clotheshorse and always meticulously coordinated my shoes and bag with my outfit, but now that I'm retired, those things seem to have decreased significantly in priority and instead my attraction seems to be to computers, cameras and lenses...... Also I have a particular affinity for external SSDs! LOL!

He said there was very little evidence. He said the hole blocking I’d done with wire wool might have resolved the issue.

Mouse traps deployed to the loft earlier. The guy will be back in a few days to check on them.
Ah, good luck.

I remember when Decent Brother & I had to deal with a visit by a furry gentleman; we puraches a mousetrap, and had a discussion on how best to approach this.

I argued for Roquefort, if one must depart this earth, depart while stuffed with a sublime cheese; he thought the most brutal and obvious and additive laden industrial cheddar should do the trick.

When - if - I'm giving a talk, - or attending one - (or, in the days when I still attended classical or other concerts) I'm still colour co-ordinated.

AFB, that's encouraging that the mouse problem might not be as bad as you'd thought!!! Fingers crossed, especially that the covering up of the holes has pretty much solved the problem, too.

SS: Oh, I'm still usually color-coordinated, even if I'm just running to the grocery store -- it's just that the clothes are not as professional looking now, the shoes sure as heck are not, and I don't always bother to grab a different purse to use if the one that already has things in it and is sitting out is at least a color and style that won't clash with whatever I am wearing! I have a really nice little orange leather bag that I use a lot, as it is an ideal size (I hate big purses and bags) and orange goes surprisingly well with a lot of other colors!

Caramel spray apparently.

Haven’t heard them this evening, so that’s the third day since we have had any nocturnal scratches.

My trip to London is on my mind. Can’t remember the last time I was in a hotel. I’d sooner be at home. But it’s just two nights. Let’s hope they have Stella on the room service list.

Ah, yes, a nice Stella or two would go down nicely, wouldn't it?! :) I love it when I go to a hotel or restaurant and Stella is available -- especially when it is on draft! (Draught?). Mmmmmm!!!!!

I've got my Stella for celebrating Thanksgiving tomorrow, along with my shrimp dinner...... Who needs turkey, anyway?!

Well I think the bar is closed! Room service only.

Oh, right, of course the bar and restaurant proper would be closed now..... I'd temporarily forgotten that you all are in lockdown again or some modification thereof. Not pleasant times, these.....
Lockdown until next week. Then some other slightly modified tier system. To be honest it makes no difference to me. Only place I go is work. Just work is in another city for awhile.

Ah.

Well, Decent Brother was right; my Roquefort was untouched (I assumed that we would have attracted a classy and discerning furry gentleman), but no, once the Roquefort had been replaced by industrial cheddar of a terrifying orange hue, the problem was solved.

When is your trip to London scheduled to take place? How long will you be away for?

Enjoy your shrimp, and Stella tomorrow.

How do you plan to serve the shrimp?

I may well be looking out for ideas for a Christmas repast of my own, especially if Covid conditions mean that Decent Brother won't be able to travel home.

Agree re turkey; that is a dish for when the hordes or multitudes are to be fed. Not something that tends to happen these days.

Well I think the bar is closed! Room service only.

Gosh; I sincerely hope that room service can do the needful.

Yes, strange times, to put it mildly.

Today was the highest count of COVID-19 cases (or maybe it was deaths) since back in the Spring..... I have the feeling that the numbers are going to soar even higher after the Thanksgiving weekend is over. So, sure, from the sound of it, many folks are on the road or on a train or on a plane headed off to celebrate Thanksgiving with family and/or friends, but, oh boy, may really regret this when someone in their gathering becomes ill or dies because people couldn't just pay attention to the recommendations that they stay at home. I think medical personnel and hospitals are already gearing up for this very distinct likelihood.
