I recently got an 83 inch, LG 4K OLED TV. I’m old, I grew up on small B&W TVs. This one is rather amazing. I mostly watch content on the Apple TV 4K, some sports over the air.

I’ve been watching some art documentaries on the Magellan TV App. I’m not an artist at all, but I find it remarkable to view the works of Rubens, Titian, Matisse and others cast upon this screen in my living room. After all these years of squinting at low resolution, poorly rendered images this is fantastic.

Well in honour of some comments earlier in this thread and the ongoing mess with Twitter I wanted to post a couple of worthwhile accounts I follow on that platform:

The Cultural Tutor

Focusing on ancient history and philosophy there also is a newsletter and site in case Elon shuts everything down:

https://culturaltutor.com/areopagus

Another one:

Propagandopolis

Bits of propaganda from around the world. Posting neutrally. DM submissions. Prints available on the website:
propagandopolis.com

As it says on the box really cool propaganda from numerous epochs and countries.

As a bonus a couple of cool TikTok accounts no twearking I promise:

Aslan Pahari

Lives in Australia orginally from Pakistan posts on varied subjects such as geography, history, language and also debunks various other TikTok conspiracy posts with a short blurb from said post then the phrase "Hello my friend" whereby he demolishes the "facts" presented.

History with Sarah

Cool little snippets of lesser-known historical trivia.

Anyway enjoy your Friday.

Only two things are allowed on a hot dog:

Ketchup
Mustard

You need a proper sausage sandwich

Bread (no butter allowed), one slice, folded around the sausage.
Sausage (thin, economy. No gourmet ones allowed)
Sliced onion, half almost raw, half barbecued to the point of carbonisation
Either Tomato Sauce (no ketchup here, proper tomato sauce) or Barbecue Sauce.
One thin paper serviette.

Best to wear a dark shirt to hide the sauce stains that will drip on it.

That sounds like it's for fancy people.

I have a confession to make; I bought an Apple "Trail Loop" Watch Strap for my Apple Watch Ultra for £99. Then bought a cheap copy off Amazon for £15 which I thought was just as good, so decided to return the Apple one. I've just discovered that I made a huge mistake! I've returned the cheap Amazon one to Apple! I sent the wrong one back! Can't believe it. Hope Tim doesn't come after me! Unbelievable.

You’ll be blacklisted by Apple for that. All your devices will stop working and you’ll have to buy an Android device! 😱

Nice try. You won’t get sympathy from us. Little known fact is that Chateu d’If was opened precisely for people like you.

😝

At the grocery store today, which is one that I don't get to often and isn't my regular one, I looked to see if by any chance they had notepads/scratch pads/writing tablets, and nope, nary a one! It's annoying as there are some of us who still do like to use a notepad and a pen to jot down things as opposed to doing it on an iPhone or iPad...... I first started noticing the lack of these in the stores a few months ago and now while I've got a couple of notepads left, they're being used and soon I will run out altogether.

Amazon to the rescue once again! Whew! One interesting thing I noticed is that when I searched there for "writing tablets," iPads and Windows-based tablets came up, not paper-based writing tablets. I switched my search language and eventually did get to what I really wanted, and promptly placed an order so that soon I will have a fresh supply of memo pads/notepads/scratch pads to keep me happy for a while....

Tim Cook will come to your house to beat you up.

Regarding the retro love for pen, paper and other old school writing implements I must say that my director would agree with you. He writes very nicely and always writes notes for work instructions and uses a journal to keep track of work and personal dates. We chipped in and got him a Montblanc fountain pen for his birthday which he greatly appreciates and uses.

I can't tell you how many people admire the fountain pens I use at work, especially those who were taught penmanship. I think that the act of handwriting has taken a back seat to digital communication, and this has come at the loss of some of the cognitive aspects of writing. When writing with a fountain pen, you are forced to (at least I am forced to) write slower and a bit more deliberately. This generally gives my brain the extra time to formulate the thought more clearly, and I find my notes were clearer. With the transition to paperless, I find that the notes are less "processed" in their translation from the patient to my brain to the chart.

As for weather and time of the year, for me it’s very simple.

CONST Acceptable = 65

REM 65F = 18.3C

IF CurrentTemp < Acceptable THEN
HateEveryoneAndEverything = True
ELSE
HateEveryoneAndEverything = False
END IF
Yes
except CONST Acceptable = 75

I was horrified to learn not too long ago that they no longer teach cursive writing in the schools. WTH?????

Amen to that.

A heartfelt and profund amen to that.

And yes, I have had similar experiences, as I, too, write - almost exclusively (yes, even to shopping lists) - with fountain pens.

What?

No?

What an appalling.....I cannot even dignify it by describing it as "an idea", or a "fatuous notion".....

they barely write at all now with the fact that 90% of the homework is now digital. It’s insane.
Agreed.

And the thing is, as @Doc C so aptly observes - is that writing (by hand) compels you to process (and think about, - because you have to put this into words, which means that you have to think about, and thus, hopefully try to understand, which means you must master, learn, remember) this information, and, in a way that nothing else can come close to.

Friends of mine (actually, above all, former students of mine) - who are now (themselves) academics, have lamented to me that nothing beats taking handwritten notes for facilitating comprehension (and retention) of core, class material; not sexy slides, not iPads, not material downloaded onto their computers.

I will make a fuller reply later, but there are many reasons to write by hand. Studies have shown that students who take notes by hand in lectures have a better retention and understanding than those who type on a laptop.
As well, when was the last time you read a really beautifully written paragraph in any novel or non-fiction book. When the pen (dip or fountain) was replaced by the keyboard (typewriter and later computer) the quality of writing went down. Just look at the last paragraph in "Origin of Species".

Eh. My studies have shown my hand got tired much faster than typing.
