I am by no means an Apple fanboi, but until I see android phones crashing servers when trying to be ordered, Apple is doing things correctly.

Verizon's activation servers had delays during the first couple days of Droid Incredible sales. So anyone can be caught by surprise at least once.

In this case, it sounds like the ATT servers were primed to crash. Rumors say that new ordering code went in last week without any load or user or security testing. People are even reportedly seeing each other's credit card and shipping info.

I defended ATT's goof with the iPad email addresses, but now it's all looking like a systemic problem with their IT department. I wonder if they farmed this all out overseas.

I'm probably the wrong person to ask as I'm pretty tech crazy. But I think the 4 is def a very worthy upgrade over the 3GS. Screen, processor, camera, battery, design, facetime, gyroscope. Beats the hell out of the faster processor and compass of the 3G to 3GS.

I don't quite understand the mania going on with iPhone 4. It doesn't seem to do that much more than my 3GS. If I stick with that I still get all the new software goodies. I'm guessing the hardware will be able to handle the new software. Seems like the 4 has incremental changes. Worthy of getting some day but can anyone explain to me the mania on this one? Seems to be as crazy as when version 1 came out which at the time was truly unique.

I'm not frothing and I love to froth over new Apple stuff.

+1

Many of these folks, having used up their eligibility this year, will be in agony next year, when a 4G/LTE-capable model becomes available. I have the iPhone bug, and it continues to be difficult for me to resist ordering the 4, just because. But I intend not to, because I think the next one will truly have and do stuff the 3GS doesn't and can't, besides taking prettier pictures.

Hmmm. Maybe my next phone will be the Verizon  4G+. Didn't think about that until just now.

Too soon. The first iPhone (in the US) to be 4G capable will be in 2012. The next version could certainly find it's way on multiple carriers, however.

This is, of course, the OTHER school of thought. ;) It's every bit as possible as my scenario, in which case I may end up agonizing that I didn't get this year's model. As long as my 3GS stays healthy, it should be an interesting year.

That is what pushed me to the iPhone from the Verizon Droid. What other people are looking for may vary. I am by no means an Apple fanboi, but until I see android phones crashing servers when trying to be ordered, Apple is doing things correctly.

Speaking of the DROID, I'm a smartphone enthusiast & have three lines. One for my iPhone, DROID, & BlackBerry. The only reason I still use a BlackBerry is for the physical keyboard. I travel for work constantly, so I process 30 or more emails each day. While the slide out keyboard on the DROID is OK, it's not as good as it needs to be. The upcoming DROID 2 has a new improved keyboard without the trackpad. If the new keys are as useful as they appear to be, that model will be outstanding for people like me that are highly mobile. I've had a few smartphones with the slide out horizontal keyboard. All have been close, but nothing like the truly excellent keyboards that RIM has on theirs. I wish that Apple would offer a slide out keyboard, if they did I truly believe they would kill off RIM's dominance in the corporate space. Finally, if the iPhone had a slide out keyboard I would choose it as my _only_ smartphone.

I guess I might be surprised at how many people kept their 3G and skipped the 3GS. That would explain a lot of it if true. It would also explain why the 3GS launch did not feel as frothy.

So upgraders, what model are you upgrading from to get 4?

3G. My contract wasn't up til now and honestly, the 3GS was not worth the upgrade to pay 699 for and I consoled myself Id' get an even bigger jump by waiting for the next iphone (plus my roommate was not impressed and he'st he main account holder and the 3GS at the time didn't really excite me enough to try to argue the matter).

I'm not sure I'd pay 699 for this one either but our contract is up so I get the upgrade price and it's worth it for that.

and what was so special about the 3G ---> 3Gs Update?

New design, new display, great camera+HD recording, facetime(even tho restricted) better battery+antenna.

What did the 3Gs get? 2x faster and a compass?

It's just been a while since a major major update.

This.

I mean, I was surprised when there were lines for the 3Gs. I had a 3G and didn't get a 3Gs because it only added a compass and a faster speed bump. Believe it or not, but not everyone has a 3gs some have a 3g or *gasp* an original iPhone!!

So being that there were many hardware changes compared to previous models, I think it's pretty obvious what the mania is about.
