Giving my daughter a new iPhone for Christmas to replace an older one. Assuming Verizon will be to busy to help use on Christmas morning, whats the easiest why to activate it on her existing account?

    1. Insert new SIM card into phone.
    2. Turn on phone.

Nah, it's Verizon, a CDMA-based carrier. Shoving a SIM in the phone won't enable the voice features. The SIM only affects the LTE data circuitry.

He is stuck contacting Verizon customer service, either today, tomorrow, or sometime in the near future to fully activate the device.

    Online activation

If you have an online account with Verizon, you can activate a new iPhone by requesting an equipment replacement online. It may be helpful to set up an account before Christmas.

Yeah Verizon has to partition the CDMA/LTE services. Don't worry i'm sure they'll have somebody working customer service on Christmas Day.
